    The Los Angeles Chargers announce the official opening of “The Bolt,” the team’s new state-of-the-art training facility and corporate headquarters. Located on One Chargers Way, the El Segundo-based facility boasts expansive views of the LA Basin – including the Downtown skyline, Griffith Observatory and iconic Hollywood sign – and sits within four miles of LAX, popular South Bay beaches and SoFi Stadium.

    Encompassing 150,000 square feet of breathtaking architectural design, The Bolt boasts an ecosystem of over 250 Samsung LED displays spread across a meticulously planned three-level layout. The Bolt sits on 14 acres, including three full natural grass practice fields. The ground floor features an expansive locker room, equipment room, training & medical space, weight room, hydrotherapy room, recovery room, sauna, steam room, barber’s area, multiple player lounges and direct access to practice fields, a lap/rehab pool and an outdoor lounge featuring a BBQ, firepit and full sun outdoor televisions.

    Samsung technology on the ground floor includes:

    • Samsung 4K Smart Signage in sizes ranging from 43 to 85 inches for displaying nutrition, strength and performance information.

Also home to offices for both coaching and football operations staff, the floor includes all positional meeting rooms (including a turf outdoor walk-thru space on the second level balcony) as well as a two-story team meeting room. The main reception area of the facility presents guests a striking three-story Samsung ISC Indoor LED upon entry while the media center, adjacent to the showpiece staircase, utilizes a Samsung LCD Video Wall as a backdrop for press conferences. Perhaps equally as impressive but not seen, The Bolt also delivers Verizon’s cloud-based mobility, security, 5G edge, and private 5G network solutions to prioritize connectivity developed for a competitive culture.

    Another key feature of the building unveiled earlier in the week, the Chargers Walk of Fame adorns the entrance to The Bolt. Honoring each member of the Chargers Hall of Fame with their own terrazzo tile and brass inlay, the walk was commissioned by the Chargers and executed by the same company that installs displays on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

    “It’s a small way to say ‘thank you’ to the greats that played for our team over the last 60-plus years,” said Spanos. “It’s the first thing you see when you come into this building which really, to me, says that this is the foundation of our team.”

    The Bolt will open its doors to the public on July 13-14. During the exclusive two-day event, fans will have the opportunity to tour various areas on the first level of the building, including the main lobby atrium, press conference space, Chargers locker room, the turf pad running the length of practice field #1 and also view the weight room through the three retractable doors that create an indoor/outdoor training space for the team. Reservations for the seven hourly tour windows each day maxed out within the first 30 minutes of being posted to the Chargers site.

    “Our fans are part of the Chargers family,” said Spanos. “This is theirs as much as it is ours, and I want them to feel that when they come here.”

    Additionally, the Chargers will kick off their inaugural training camp at The Bolt beginning July 24. As in previous years, fans will need to pre-register for their free tickets. In all, the team will host 12 public practices during the first three weeks of training camp – four each week. With limited capacity, registration to attend practice will take place in waves through chargers.com/camp. Fans will be able to register to attend Week 1 practices beginning Monday, July 15, Week 2 practices beginning Monday, July 22 and Week 3 practices beginning Monday, July 29.

    Christie® technologies are powering immersive educational experiences at the Luanda Science Center (CCL) in Angola. The CCL, built on the site of a former soap factory, features powerful audio and visual technology inside and out to engage visitors and inspire future generations.

    An auditorium at the CCL has been equipped with two Christie Griffyn 4K35-RGB pure laser projectors and Vive Audio® speakers to deliver impactful educational content, while eight Christie D20WU-HS 1DLP® laser projectors power a permanent outdoor video mapping attraction on the building’s façade. The project was carried out by Christie partner PROAVIT and consultant MUSE for Athena Swiss AG.

    The 146-seat auditorium features a 180 square meter (1937.5 square foot) screen that measures 15.5 meters (50 feet) wide by 11.65 meters (38 feet) high, totaling more than 12 million pixels. “With 36,500 lumens, RGB pure laser illumination, native 4K resolution and 3DLP® technology, the Griffyn 4K35-RGBs deliver spectacular visuals with an exceptionally wide color gamut,” says Pedro Carmo, director of PROAVIT, the AV integrator for the project. Special effects include vibration, water and air, which are synchronized with the on-screen content to increase immersion.

    The auditorium is also equipped with Dolby Atmos with 32 audio channels, powered by 34 Christie Vive Audio speakers and nine Powersoft Quattrocanali series amplifiers. “The Vive Audio speakers have great performance with very low distortion, making them ideal for complementing the visual experience of the big screen,” adds Jordi Mollà, AV engineer at MUSE.

    Outside the CCL, eight Christie D20WU-HS 1DLP laser projectors were installed discreetly in ventilated watertight cabinets to map onto the façade of the building and create a 114 meter (374 feet) wide by 11 meter (36 feet) high canvas. This nighttime projection was created by OCUBO, a multi-awarded design studio, and aims to bring learning to life, highlighting topics such as Angolan culture, the human body, planets, fauna, flora and science.

    “Christie technology has contributed to transforming this space into a true center of excellence, creating a cutting-edge immersive experience for visitors,” says Mollà. “We would also like to highlight the work of PROAVIT, which solved the various challenges we faced with great efficiency and professionalism. The Luanda Science Center has established itself as a benchmark in education and entertainment in Africa, backed by an advanced technological infrastructure that is unique in the world.”

    Nicknamed the Queen City, Charlotte is one of the 25 largest cities in the U.S. and the largest city in North Carolina. Home to more than 10 Fortune 1000 companies, including household names such as Bank of America, Lowe’s, and Duke Energy, Charlotte is also home to the University of North Carolina Charlotte campus (UNC Charlotte). A public research university of 30,000 students, UNC Charlotte offers 24 doctoral, 66 master’s, and 79 bachelor’s degree programs through nine colleges. The athletic team’s nickname is the 49ers, indicative of the fact that UNC Charlotte (then Charlotte College) was saved from permanent closure in 1949. The mascot is, aptly, “Norm the Niner,” a gold miner.

    UNC Charlotte’s Division I FCS football team kicked off in 2013. The team plays at Jerry Richardson Stadium, which holds approximately 15,000 people and can be expanded to up to 40,000 people. As a result of the football team’s immediate success, the football program moved up to Division I FBS in 2015. Before their move to the American Athletic Conference for 2023-24, the stadium was still using the original sound system from when it was built, which was sorely in need of an audio upgrade. To invigorate the crowd experience, the university turned to the award-winning amplifiers from LEA Professional.

    The athletic staff contacted Stephen Morris, President of C.V. Lloyde AudioVisual, to help revitalize the audio system. The university wanted a more reliable and robust system that could energize the crowd with the actions down on the field.

    “The old sound system was designed for a small FCS-style stadium, and UNC Charlotte needed a system that reflected the current status of their program in FBS football,” said Morris. “While top-notch sound quality was of critical importance to UNC Charlotte, they also wanted amplifiers that were reliable and easy to use, and LEA amplifiers fit the bill perfectly.”

    Morris’s team installed multiple Connect Series 354D amplifiers to power the immersive audio experience in the stadium’s fieldhouse.     At the new Dallas, Texas headquarters of SAVI Controls, a leading innovator of audio, video and lighting control and automation systems, the company has created what may be the world’s most advanced commercial AV experience center for dealers and end customers.

    The highlight of the center is a 24-foot-wide by 10-foot-high LG MAGNIT DVLED display that serves as an interactive virtual design interface, offering guests a convincing life-sized virtual space with live editing of on-screen rooms and accurate virtual comparisons of display sizes, with various other LG digital displays providing supplemental content.

    “The SAVI Experience Room is un-like anything we’ve done before, and to our knowledge is the first life-size virtual design environment in North America, as well as the first truly com-mercial-focused experience center of this magnitude,” said Derek Wilson, SAVI’s co-founder and CVO. “Our guests and potential customers are treated to a one-of-a-kind product showroom that demonstrates our mas-tery of digital AV technologies and shows how we can deliver extraordi-nary experiences and optimized integrations for their projects.     The SAVI Experience Center is the first thing guests encounter when they enter the headquarters building, and it is used as the grand finale of official tours. The eye-catching 0.9mm LG webOS™ DVLED display covers an entire wall while several vertically-oriented LG LCD displays highlight the various virtual locations the DVLED demos can display, including stadiums, offices, hospital-ity businesses and real SAVI projects from all over the world.

    “We wanted to help our customers skip the imagining step and go straight to real life-size visual-ization, and the fine-pitch LG DVLED gave us that opportunity,” Wilson added. “We live with this technology every day, and the new immersive tour gives dealers and business owners hands-on experience with real-time control, and it all happens in a virtual environment so we can cus-tomize it or add more environments over time without having to physically construct new rooms. So far, we have multiple demos, including real-world photos from local sports bars and golf enter-tainment venues that we turned into controllable virtual spaces.”

    For many guests, it is also their first time seeing the power and capabilities of LG’s CLOi GuideBot robotic assistant, which is used to reserve and activate meeting spaces, offer receptionist services, lead tours and even provide automated demos of connected lights and AV equipment.

    Tour guests also get to use the intuitive, web-based SAVI interface for themselves on a tablet or phone, so they can see how easy it is to navigate, adjust and control any space, including specific applications like the powerful SAVI Canvas that enables instant content dissemination across en-tire display networks.

    “SAVI has shown that you don’t have to build a physical space to demonstrate physical experiences,” said Michael Kosla, senior vice pres-ident, LG Business Solutions USA. “With this high-resolution wall-sized LG DVLED display, they can simu-late any kind of virtual room or envi-ronment they want and make live changes on the screen, including swapping AV components and play-ing live content on various virtual screens. The 0.9mm pixel pitch looks so real that it feels like you can walk into the virtual room, and many tour guests end up touching the display out of curiosity and awe. And that’s not even mentioning the full-building control demo that shows SAVI’s mastery of im-plementation and system design.”

    Delivering “wow factor” played a role in the concept for this space, but its functional utility ce-mented it as a vital part of the new SAVI headquarters. In addition to the on-screen virtual envi-ronments with real-time interactions and editing, the huge display also makes an excellent canvas to show how SAVI’s solutions can control entire buildings. In one part of the demo, live views of other rooms in the facility are displayed on screen, including office spaces where workers are

    sitting. With the touch of a button, the tour guide can show how easy it is to adjust lighting color or control the LG digital displays in any room remotely.

    As a video distribution solution largely built on webOS software to eliminate the box behind every display, SAVI Canvas is natively compatible with LG commercial displays and technologies, which is why the company often recommends customers use LG solutions. That’s part of the rea-son LG technologies are deployed everywhere from the Experience Center to desktop monitors to boardrooms, helping show SAVI’s commitment to optimized integrated AV solutions.

    “Through our relationship with LG we are also making the space available for LG and dealers to give their customers demos, making it a win-win that helps expedite decision making and project approvals,” Wilson concluded. “With customizations like our CLOi GuideBot programming, we are showing and offering specialized features customers can utilize that wouldn’t be realistic if they simply purchased the individual hardware pieces without our solutions and software.     Red House Streaming and RHStv Paddle Upstream with Live Rowing Competition Productions

    Red House Streaming, a subsidiary of CP Communications, stacked the deck this spring with live exclusive rowing event productions for broadcast on RHStvRed House Streaming’s FAST (free ad supported television) streaming network. Between March and May, Red House Streaming produced five rowing competitions that were streamed live on RHStv from Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, with nearly 600,000 unique viewers tuning in for the five events.

    These five events represent the first in a series planned for 2024 and beyond at Nathan Benderson Park, with Red House Streaming serving as the venue’s exclusive provider of live production and technical support services for high school and collegiate rowing events. Several events, including the 2024 FIRA Championships which attracted more than 200,000 viewers, are available to stream on-demand at RHStv’s Events page on the RHStv website and free RHStv app, with select content available at @watchrhstv on popular social media platforms.

    As part of the agreement, Red House Streaming supplied turnkey REMI production flypacks with five video camera packages to acquire live content, IP networking and transmission systems, EFX (effects) shotgun microphones for field audio capture, and remote commentator kits for three announcers. The latter includes headsets and microphones for on-air talent broadcasting live from the fourth floor of the Benderson Finish Tower, which overlooks the finish line on the 309-acre Nathan Benderson Park Lake.

    A total of six camera feeds are transmitted back to St. Petersburg, including two RHS CamSTREAM robotic PTZ cameras (featuring I/O inputs for EFX microphones), two broadcast cameras, one drone for aerial coverage, and one RF cart camera for roaming coverage. The RHS CamSTREAM systems, developed in-house by CP Communications, are found at the starting alignment position and at the midway point of the course, along with two broadcast cameras. One broadcast camera was located on the second floor of the Benderson Finish Tower and another plus the drone pilot were stationed on the rooftop two floors above the indoor announcer’s booth at the finish line. Red House Streaming provide a Glensound Paradiso booth kit with headsets and talent microphones for up to three announcers, along with Seetec video monitors with multi-view and program feeds at all three announcer positions.

    Haivision Makito X4 encoders and decoders provided ultra-low-latency, broadcast-quality content transmission back to St. Petersburg so that viewers witnessed the action in real-time. That was especially important for these events as RHStv launched an interactive chat room on its app and website in time for the first event. The live chat appears to the right of the live competition, allowing viewers to engagement with other fans as well as the commentators as the races progressed. The RF camera cart was also new this year, which was essentially a golf cart with an integrated camera positioned on a robotic arm and stabilizer.

    “Everything we added this year has been about raising visibility and fan engagement for these rowing competitions, from attracting more spectators to the venue to building viewership online,” said Kurt Heitmann, CEO, CP Communications and Red House Streaming/RHStv. “In addition to driving viewer interaction through our new chat room, we have elevated our content acquisition strategy, incorporated more B-Roll video, and inserted more sponsorship video analogous to what sports viewers see on broadcast and cable networks. Our announcers were also equipped with enhance audio packages, which allowed them to hear and comment on live interactions between rowers and coaches. All of this adds up to a professional sports experience that we will continue to build on at RHStv.”

    Technical support services were provided through a crew of seven field and control room technicians to capture the rowing competitions as they unfolded on the water. That includes two broadcast camera technicians and one drone pilot for aerial content, plus one tech manager and systems technician to manage and transmit field-acquired content back to the Red House Streaming Production Center in St. Petersburg. There, a staff of five technicians provided live switching, replay, graphics insertion and monitoring among other live production services to create a truly professional live sports broadcast that was replicated on the Overnght Streaming Network.

    The rowing events produced and live streamed on RHStv this spring include:

    • FIRA State Championships, attracting more than 200,000 viewers and more 2400 active viewers at its peak
    • FSRA Sweep Championships, attracting 111,000 viewers and more than 1200 active viewers at its peak

    Winspear Centre Installs Canada’s First L-Acoustics L Series Concert Sound System

    From its grand opening in 1997, the Francis Winspear Centre for Music’s 1,716-seat Enmax Hall has served as the primary performance space for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. But the resplendent concert hall is just as well known for hosting a steady stream of other performers as well—including touring artists from blues, country, folk, jazz, rock, and other genres—in addition to a diverse roster of community events. To best accommodate the room’s wide range of sonic styles, dbi Systems Integration collaborated with L-Acoustics Certified Provider FM Systems to equip the Winspear Centre with Canada’s first permanently installed L Series loudspeaker system.

    dbi Systems and FM Systems are shared providers of services to the Winspear Centre, with dbi providing all permanent in-house AV systems and FM providing all production services and rentals. Since 2014, dbi Systems has worked with Winspear Head of Audio Jonas Duffy on a wide variety of short- and long-term plans to allow for ongoing A/V systems upgrades with a purposeful long-range vision.

    “As a part of these ongoing system upgrades in 2021, it was decided that it was time to look at replacing the existing house loudspeaker system in the main hall,” says dbi Systems Integration Principal Jerry Van Dyke. “After several years of auditioning products from some of today’s premier loudspeaker manufacturers, L-Acoustics was deemed the loudspeaker of choice for this project. Over the next two years there was collaboration between Winspear Centre, dbi Systems, FM Systems, and L-Acoustics on the design and configuration of the system, which was integrated by dbi Systems.”

    The Centre’s prior PA had been installed in 2007 and struggled to meet the demands of current touring acts that were looking for higher SPL capabilities. “As is always the case in our industry, there had been major changes in technology since that system had been installed and the Winspear wanted the performance capabilities of today’s best loudspeaker systems,” notes dbi Associate and Senior Systems Designer Joshua Duguid. “The three major requirements were: premium sonic quality, high SPL capability, and smooth, even coverage throughout the entire room—all of which L-Acoustics was perfectly suited to deliver.”

    Originally, the new system design consisted of an assortment of L-Acoustics Kara II loudspeakers, flown KS28 subwoofers, KS21 floor subwoofers, A15i choir-fills and 5XT lip-fills. However, two weeks before the bid submission deadline, dbi Systems learned that L-Acoustics was going to be debuting a new loudspeaker line that would be a “game-changer in the permanent install and touring worlds,” he describes.

    Following discussions on performance capabilities, aesthetics, suitability for the room, and rider acceptance, L Series was chosen for Winspear’s main chamber hall. “After modeling the room with the L2/L2D enclosures, it was clear that the L Series concert sound system would provide even better coverage and superior sonic capabilities in a smaller footprint,” says Van Dyke. While acknowledging that there was a degree of risk in going with a product that dbi Systems had no prior experience with, it was decided that the pedigree of L-Acoustics products and the company’s history of delivering on what it promised made the risk worthwhile. With a great deal of collaboration between Duffy, dbi Systems, and L-Acoustics, the entire system was re-designed in two weeks.

    The resulting design now features left and right main arrays of two L2 enclosures over one L2D per side, with a third central array planned to be flown later this summer. For low frequency reinforcement, four KS21 subs arranged in cardioid configuration sit on both the far left and right sides of the stage, directly below the main arrays. Eleven ultra-compact X4i in a custom RAL color are mounted across the stage face for low-SPL front-fill, while six larger X8 supply high-SPL front-fill. Onstage, two clusters of two A10 Focus—mounted to the top back sides of the L Series hangs—serve as stage monitors for the choir loft.

    Out in the house, 14 compact 5XT are mounted to the ceiling of the underbalcony area for additional fill, with two X8 functioning as dress circle loge fills. The FOH mix position benefits from a near-field monitoring setup of two 5XT paired with a single SB10i sub, while a projection booth/mother’s room benefits from three X8 and one SB10i. The venue’s lobby area also features an L-Acoustics system comprised of six Soka accompanied by six more SB10i.

    Milan-AVB is used as the audio signal path for the entire system. “With amplifiers being in five different room locations at distances between them being up to 500 feet, Milan-AVB was integral to this design,” says Duguid. “The Winspear venue relies heavily on AVoIP, and already had Dante, Q-SYS, and Video over IP in place. A large part of this install was upgrading and redesigning the network infrastructure. Redundancy was key, and many steps were taken in the design/install to ensure the system always functions.” Two fully independent switching infrastructures were connected by redundant fiber trunks, and mission-critical devices are on two separate UPS circuits. All of the L-Acoustics amplified controllers also utilize the 24-volt backup to ensure minimal downtime in the event of a power outage.

    The first show after the system commissioning was, appropriately, an Edmonton Symphony Orchestra concert—a tribute to the music of Canadian-American singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. “We heard so many comments from the guests that night on how amazing our new system sounded and looked,” says Winspear’s Jonas Duffy. “Our technicians were amazed at how smooth the coverage was. Our old system had spots in the room where you would hear the gaps or interactions between the array boxes, but the new L Series system is completely seamless, and it sounds great all the way back in the fourth-floor gallery.”

    Duffy shares that the L2/L2D system has received many positive comments from both staff and administrators on how much cleaner and less imposing the look of the loudspeakers are. “Also, from the audience’s perspective, you cannot see individual array boxes or any speaker cables, and because the L Series arrays are flown much higher than the previous ones, they leave more room for our venue’s beauty to shine through.”

    Beyond the main chamber system, the booth and projection/mother’s room systems offer a sonic experience that is virtually identical to that of being in the main chamber. For events where technicians need to mix from inside the sealed booth, they can be sure they are making sonic choices that match what the audience hears.

    “L-Acoustics L Series was an excellent choice for this project,” enthuses dbi Systems Consultant Jordan Van Dyke. “The sonic performance and SPL capabilities of this system ensure that it will meet or exceed virtually any guest act rider for years to come. For Edmonton Symphony concerts, which are the most common events in the venue, the fact that this system does not require subs to be full-range cleans up the stage exceptionally, and the ability to have the arrays in cardioid or supercardioid mode gives the musicians onstage a much-improved experience as well.”

    “Our team here at dbi realizes that an opportunity like this does not come along very often, and to see it happen at a venue that we have been partnered with for over ten years is extremely satisfying,” Van Dyke adds. “This project has been years in the making, and to see it all come together was magical. Watching the reactions of the staff at the Winspear when the system was turned on for the first time, the looks of shock and awe, followed by silence and spontaneous applause, is a moment that we will never forget.”

    Leaders at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point recognize that a robust esports program is valuable for teaching cadets how to become skilled tacticians, make decisions under pressure, and work as a team. Cadets compete from a futuristic esports facility within the West Point Simulation Center. Extron AV signal processing, switching, distribution, control, and audio technology enable seamless integration of gameplay AV content into a versatile hub that sends content throughout the venue and over the Internet with clarity and ultra-low latency.

    “The United States Military Academy strives to provide superior learning experiences for cadets as they develop into leaders of character who qualify to become Army Second Lieutenants,” says Victor Castro, Director Army West Point Esports. “All of the cadets currently competing on our esports teams participated in the design and construction of the esports facility AV. Collaborating with Extron on the project immersed them in a technologically advanced training environment. The hands-on experience gave them a deeper understanding of the hardware and software that makes esports possible, empowering their passion for competitive gaming.”

    Central components of the esports AV system are housed in a Production Booth rack. A 16×16 DXP PLUS 4K/60 matrix switcher routes AV sources to the room’s many displays. An MGP 641 xi displays up to four source windows on a single screen. An SMP 352 streams gaming action to West Point’s esports Twitch® channel and other online platforms. A 200-watt XPA 2001 provides powerful sound through SM 26T surface mount speakers. Game audio, as well as shoutcaster play-by-play commentary are mixed and processed by a DMP 128 Plus audio DSP processor. AV system control is provided by an IPCP Pro 360Q xi control processor. AV system control user interfaces  include 10″ and 17” TouchLink Pro touchpanels, as well wireless control from a roving tablet running Extron Control app software. Through West Point’s esports program, cadets who participate as players and as production team personnel acquire real world experience designing, building, and operating professional AV systems. Knowledge gained through this experience can be transferred to the highest levels of command cells and training facilities when cadets graduate as commissioned officers that the U.S. Army relies on to be leaders, problem-solvers, mission planners, and decision makers.

    Technology solutions provider Elite Design Systems (EDS) proudly announces the successful completion of an extensive multi-year multi-media project in collaboration with the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC). This transformative initiative encompassed a wide range of cutting-edge installations and enhancements across the two-mile, 147-acre island in New York City’s East River, between Manhattan and Queens.

    The project – spanning key Roosevelt Island locations, including the Youth Center, the newly constructed Sportspark recreational facility, the Roosevelt Island police station, the Mosaic Church, RIOC’s Operating Center, Tramway and even the island’s iconic lighthouse – included EDS-implemented LAN networking infrastructure, digital signage and state-of-the-art AV technology. Core hardware was provided by Key Digital, the award-winning developer and manufacturer of leading-edge digital video processing and video signal distribution solutions, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

    EDS team leader Bobby Imkhanitsky designed and implemented a technology upgrade that easily integrated with RIOC’s existing infrastructure for a seamless transitionEach of the AV systems implemented on Roosevelt Island is independent to its building or area, though the Key Digital Compass Control Pro integrated iOS-based control system, which can extend iPad control to include a host of Compass Alliance partner systems even beyond the AV network, unifies all aspects of the system through shared networking.

    The Youth Center AV solution on Roosevelt Island utilizes a 4 x 20 AV over IP system composed of four KD-IP922ENC encoders (one for each source) and 20 KD-IP922DEC decoders (one for each display). 50-inch televisions are mounted throughout the facility (12 in the 2 x 6 video wall alone), along with one drop-down projector. Three of the televisions have local table mounted KD-X3x1WUTX multi-format switcher/extender three-gang plates that allow the selection between a pair each of gaming systems or the BrightSign digital signage system. “One of the things that I designed for them,” shared Imkhanitsky, “was the ability to have a gaming night. if two people are competing against each other, it can be displayed throughout the whole place.” Facility-wide sound reinforcement is controlled by dBx processors with amplification by Crown, all RS-232 controlled from the built-in control ports of the AV over IP hardware and executed by the user iPads running the Key Digital Compass Control Pro app.

    The largest installation in the system is in the Roosevelt Island Sportspark complex, where a Key Digital KD-IP922-based 8 x 16 AV over IP system was deployed. Most of the monitors are again 50-inch televisions, including a 4 x 4 video wall. One monitor is housed in an enclosure outdoors. Sources include five cable-television boxes and two BrightSign digital signage players. “Another KD-X3x1WUTX Key Digital wall plate switcher/extender allows you to locally plug in a computer for display on all the TVs or just one,” said Imkhanitsky.

    “In the gymnasium” Imkhanitsky continued, “I put a really large amplifier with some big, big speakers. So, they can have a dance on the basketball court, among many options.”

    “Sportspark is a deeply important part of the Roosevelt Island fabric.” stated RIOC president and CEO Shelton Haynes. “Since 1977, the facility has provided the community with a place to exercise, play, gather, and have fun. Over time, it had deteriorated significantly, necessitating a well-capitalized overhaul. The transformation is remarkable.”

    Cameras, mostly from around the building, are fed into the police station. There’s digital signage as well, in a modest AV over IP system installed in part to ensure a “proper backbone,” says Imkhanitsky. “They want the capability of expanding in the future and adding more displays everywhere. They also set up a command center in one of the rooms.” On the command center wall is an 85-inch TV fed by a Key Digital KD-MLV4x4Pro. “The Key Digital processor takes the display and cuts it into four. You can have multiple feeds from the camera system and then Compass Control Pro is managing whether one image fills the screen, if there are insets or four separate images all form preprogrammed presets.

    Imkhanitsky has specified Key Digital solutions for 15 years: “All of my control, all of my baluns, all of my switchers, all of my HDMI cables, they’re all Key Digital.” This standardization is, in no small part, “because their tech support team is really good,” he says. Key Digital preconfigures all AV over IP systems shipped from the factory. The turnkey AV over IP systems “drop right into place. It comes all on a rack shelf. You literally just take the rack shelf, bolt it in, plug in three cables into each one of them and that’s the extent of it, it’s so simple.”

    “I do all my Compass Control programming,” he elaborates. “Key Digital has two iOS based apps for controlling systems, one, which is the standard Key Digital App is made for simple installations. And it’s free. My problem is that I don’t get those kinds of clients. Mine are always the complicated ones – my installations are more based on experience and knowledge which Key Digital’s full Compass Control App is the perfect solution for. What experience gets you is knowing how well all of the products intermingle with each other – which ones work with each other, and which ones don’t.”

    Even with all that experience though, Imkhanitsky says, “I’ve had situations like a TV that had a firmware update and then it didn’t work with anything else. The major brands don’t really care about helping you with anything. A solution is often just a phone call away to Key Digital. Then I call up Key Digital and they say, ‘Well, it sounds like you need the little device called an HDMI connectivity fixer.’ One in, one out, and it just fixes the problem.”

    Las Vegas’ Atomic Golf takes putting to the next level

    The Las Vegas Strip has a new attraction: Atomic Golf. Opened at the end of March, the four-story venue is spread across 99,000 square feet with over 100 golf bays and eight virtual putting areas. The virtual putting areas were created and designed by Beaudry Interactive, with 32 Christie® GS Series laser projectors, selected by Coherent Design to illuminate the areas.

    The goal of the putting areas is to create a game that’s enjoyable for everyone, regardless of handicap. “Atomic Golf was looking for an option to entertain guests who may not want to use the driving bays,” says David Beaudy, principal, Beaudry Interactive (b/i), an award-winning experiential design and production studio based in Los Angeles.

    The virtual putting areas are located outdoors, with an environmental enclosure over the top, where the projectors are housed. Each green is 10 feet wide by 20 feet long, with 200 ftL of luminance (visible light) achieved by four Christie DWU1100-GS projectors. The image is bright enough to use the areas day and night and the content also punches through the bright ceiling lights, with playable time reaching up to 20 hours daily.

    There are currently three inaugural putting games to choose from, designed for all skill levels (with many more currently being dreamed up for future rounds). Guests hit targets to score points, instead of aiming for a cup, while cameras track each player’s ball on the green in real time. “The project started off with an R&D effort. We were curious to see if we could track any golf ball – with or without a marker and regardless of color – and then do a gameplay overlay,” explains David Beaudry. “That was about half our efforts for the first year: building the math and the technology in the camera arrays to be able to track golf balls over a course of any size.” The R&D resulted in the ability to track balls within a few millimeters of their location on a putting green.

    Infrared cameras track the balls on the greens. The cameras run at 170 frames per second to minimize latency, and the projectors feature a low-latency mode, minimizing the delay between tracking and projection mapping to enhance performance and ensure seamless execution. “The other half of our R&D effort was all the math that brings it together, to ensure that a golf ball moving along the putting green is seamlessly transitioned from one camera to the next,” says Beaudry. Additionally, the system is designed to distinguish between player’s balls, allowing for competitive head-to-head play on the same putting green.

    Coherent Design selected 32 Christie DWU1100-GS laser projectors for the putting areas, based on years of experience working with Christie technology. “It’s a harsh environment so we needed a projector manufacturer that was backed by solid engineering. We know Christie has engineers and project managers who could help us with a successful project,” explains Kevin Potts, managing principal, Coherent Design. “There are a lot of companies who make 10,000 lumen projectors, but when we get into more complex projects, we want a manufacturer who has not only the engineering capabilities to build their product but the know-how to implement their product into unique environments.”

    Featuring laser illumination and WUXGA resolution, the Christie® DWU1100-GS 1DLP® projector delivers 11,850 ISO lumens (10,000 ANSI lumens), quiet operation of less than 37dBA, 20,000 hours of illumination lifetime, a full suite of lenses, and 24/7 durability.

    Coherent Design worked with Christie to determine the number of projectors needed, the brightness, and the portal glass for the enclosures. Las Vegas’ Simply Connected installed the projectors.

    Beaudry Interactive and Coherent Design delivered a project that enhances Atomic Golf’s entertainment options and creates a unique experience for guests. “It’s always a challenge to find clients who embrace this type of technology,” says Beaudry. “It’s unchartered territory, which they fully embraced.”
