    Leader provides T&M for global broadcast of Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Barcelona’s Sagrada Família

    Test & measurement innovator, Leader Electronics of Europe, is proud to announce that two of its leading products, the PHABRIX Qx rasterizer and LeaderPhabrix LPX500 waveform monitor, were employed during the live production of the recent event held at the Basilica of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain. Taking place on June 10, the production captured a historic visit by Pope Leo XIV to the church, marking both the centenary of the death of the basilica’s legendary architect, Antoni Gaudí, and the recent completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ.

    The much-loved house of worship has been under construction for 144 years, and it is anticipated that it will be a further decade before it is fully complete. But there is no doubt that the finalization of the Tower of Jesus Christ represents a hugely significant moment; not only is it the Sagrada Família’s centerpiece, but it is also the world’s tallest church tower at 172.5 meters tall.

    Accordingly, expectations were sky-high for the broadcast production of the Jesus Tower inauguration, coinciding with the Holy Father’s visit, which was overseen by the national Catalan broadcaster 3Cat (TV3). Production director Pauli Subira Claramunt worked to realize artistic director Igor Cortadellas’ vision of an event that encompassed both the interior and exterior of the church, and required cinematographic techniques and technologies, some of which – like Sony’s Cinema Line cameras – had not previously been used in a European international UHD/HDR live broadcast.

    “Regardless of the cost that UHD/HDR might have [for an event like this], the importance of the production and the relevance in terms of archival and distribution is so large that it doesn’t really matter if it’s more expensive,” says Hector Sole-Bradshaw Beltran, the broadcast engineering consultant who served as technical director for the project, and who describes his primary hurdle as “how to unify two fields of expertise – the broadcast engineering requirements of Tier One production, and digital cinematography tools.”

    With so many technical challenges in play, it’s not surprising that Sole-Bradshaw wanted to employ some of his enduring ‘go-to’ production tools – including two from the Leader Electronics product range. Indeed, he reveals that he “always brings” his PHABRIX Qx advanced rasterizer to a production, adding that it “surely has a place in any high-end OB deployment in the world. What I tend to do is have a V-Lock battery powering the unit, so I don’t need to have it plugged into mains, and that allows me to move to different places in the engineering footprint and do the required testing and analysis.”

    Sole-Bradshaw also brought along a LeaderPhabrix LPX500 quad 4K-input hybrid IP/SDI waveform monitor, which in this instance was used to display and monitor 4 x 12G-SDI signals (there was no IP element to this production). He notes: “I was able to check a camera anytime during the show or rehearsals, including both HDR and SDR sources. Again, it’s another item of very reliable equipment that helped make the production run smoothly.”

    With a mere two days to accomplish the load-in and set-up, and the architectural and physical constraints of the basilica creating plenty of challenges for the broadcast teams, there was a lot riding on the events of June 10. But Sole-Bradshaw confirms that the production went very well and the Leader T&M equipment certainly played its part, adding: “One of the most difficult things to do nowadays, especially when you take into account different political and religious beliefs, is to arrive at a production that is pleasing to everyone. But by focusing on the building itself, which is outstanding and unique in the world, it was one of those occasions where there was universal acclaim and people were left with a really beautiful memory of the day.”

    Riedel Communications and ARRI played a key role in one of the most technically ambitious Eurovision Song Contest productions to date. For the first time in the event’s history, ARRI Alexa 35 Live cameras were used as the complete main camera package for a groundbreaking Cinematic Live Production, supported by Riedel’s DIVA+ infrastructure and delivered by ORF to over 132 million viewers across more than 35 participating territories.

    As host broadcaster for the EBU’s Eurovision Song Contest, ORF set out to create a more emotional, cinematic look with greater intimacy and proximity to the artists while preserving the operational robustness of classic live broadcast. Riedel and ARRI worked closely to integrate ARRI’s cinema camera technology into a traditional OB workflow, supported by NEP and other technology partners.

    “Cinematic Live Production only works when creative ambition and technical reliability come together in one integrated ecosystem,” said Lutz Rathmann, CEO Managed Technology, Riedel Communications. “At the Eurovision Song Contest, DIVA+ provided the foundation that allowed ARRI’s cinematic image quality to be used reliably at the scale of a global live event. Together, we proved that a new visual language for live entertainment is production ready.”

    Riedel’s DIVA+ infrastructure combines data, intercom, video, and audio into one unified production network, with wireless Easy5G extensions and control capabilities supported by hi human interface. The DIVA+ setup in Vienna combined approximately 60 MediorNet frames and more than 80 network switches with more than 11 kilometers of signal fiber cables across the venue. The communications layer was based on Artist-1024 intercom nodes, integrating more than 190 Bolero wireless intercom beltpacks, over 120 Smart Panels, and approximately 650 radios with more than 60 radio channels, four digital base stations, and 16 analogue repeaters. The international commentary workflow was supported by approximately 35 commentary panels and incorporated Riedel’s new Desktop SmartPanel Commentary Panel App. Wireless Easy5G extensions for Virtual SmartPanels added further flexibility to the DIVA+ environment, while hi human interface supported selected control and orchestration aspects of the setup.

    Riedel’s MediorNet backbone connected special camera systems — including cable cams, telescopic cranes, wireless Steadicam rigs, and remote dollies — alongside intercom, tally, and return signals, ensuring that the new camera platform could be integrated without compromising the deterministic, low-latency signal layer required during the live show. A total of 24 ARRI Alexa 35 Live cameras were used across classic camera positions and special camera applications, bringing the image quality and creative flexibility associated with major film and high-end television productions into the live broadcast workflow.

    NEP served as OB integration partner, contributing broadcast expertise, OB truck infrastructure, and camera equipment. NEP integrated ARRI’s CCUs and base stations into the OB environment while preserving established signal paths for intercom, tally, return signals, and shading. Sennheiser also contributed to the broader production ecosystem with professional wireless audio expertise, supporting microphone and in-ear monitoring workflows for the artists.

    The Philips MediaSuite TVs solution offers a simple and intuitive user experience, with guests able to securely connect their smartphone or tablet to the TV using a unique QR code and instantly cast content from their preferred streaming services, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, at the touch of a button.

Content can also be recorded to files on a microSD card or external USB drive.

    ABMX systems are based on Ashton Bentley’s Cisco Certified Display Mount Chassis platform available in single and dual display configurations supporting displays from 43” to 115”.

    AJA Debuts Io Xpand Thunderbolt™ 5 Expansion Chassis for KONA and Corvid PCIe I/O Cards

    AJA Video Systems has introduced the Io Xpand, a new Thunderbolt 5-enabled PCIe expansion chassis designed for AJA KONA and Corvid video I/O cards. Built for media, live production, and Pro AV professionals, the compact enclosure allows users to connect high-performance PCIe video and audio I/O cards to Thunderbolt 5 laptops and mini-PCs running Windows, macOS, or Linux. The solution is ideal for on-set production, remote workflows, and live switching environments where portability and space-saving designs are important.

    The Io Xpand delivers up to 6000 MB/s of bi-directional PCIe bandwidth and supports Thunderbolt 5, 4, 3, and USB4 connectivity. Available as a standalone chassis or bundled with AJA’s KONA 1, KONA 4, or KONA 5 cards, it provides video professionals with a flexible and cost-effective way to access advanced capture and playback capabilities in a portable workstation. AJA will showcase the new solution at InfoComm 2026 in Las Vegas.

    AJA Video Systems unveiled Io Xpand, a high-performance Thunderbolt™ 5-enabled PCIe expansion chassis for AJA KONA and Corvid video and audio I/O cards. As demand for higher bandwidth, higher resolution content intensifies across industries, Io Xpand unlocks the performance of AJA PCIe I/O cards for video professionals leveraging Thunderbolt 5 laptops and mini-PCs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The new enclosure will be on display at InfoComm in Las Vegas, NV, June 17-19 at AJA’s booth, #N7744.

    Io Xpand is ideal for creative or live production environments where space is limited and portability matters, including on-set, remote production, and live switching. Video professionals can pair the new chassis with either a KONA 1, KONA 4, or KONA 5 I/O card and a Thunderbolt 5-equipped computer to create a powerful, compact workstation with advanced throughput and video capture/playback functionality. For AJA Developer Partners, most AJA Corvid I/O cards can easily be used with the Io Xpand enclosure to develop smaller-footprint solutions.

    AJA’s new Io Xpand chassis includes a 0.8-meter Thunderbolt 5 cable, Thunderbolt cable lock, power cable, and universal power adapter. It will be offered as a standalone unit, or in three bundles that include the Io Xpand and either a single KONA 1, KONA 4, or KONA 5 card. The KONA 5/Io Xpand bundle provides Thunderbolt 5 laptop and mini-PC users with access to the PCIe card’s high-performance 12G-SDI I/O, additional frame stores, and full I/O stack – including AES/EBU audio and machine control – in a portable, plug-and-play solution.

    Io Xpand will be available soon for purchase through AJA’s network of resellers for $499 US MSRP. Bundle packages that include an Io Xpand chassis and either a KONA 1, a KONA 4, or a KONA 5 I/O card are also coming soon, with prices ranging from $1249 US MSRP to $4455 US MSRP, depending on the KONA model.
