Illuminarium enriches the visitor experience at Wynn Resort’s flagship property in Macau

Christie® is pleased to share that its 50,000 lumen Griffyn® 4K50-RGB pure laser projectors are delivering a stunningly immersive experience for visitors and guests at Illuminarium at Wynn Palace Cotai, Macau.

The luxury five-star hotel and resort, located in Macau’s city center, is home to exclusive shopping, ultra-fine dining, and as of January 2024, the newest Illuminarium location. The new experience builds on the Macau SAR Government’s diversified development strategy, a long-term plan to enrich the visitor experience through the development of non-gaming experiences. Illuminarium engages guests of all ages through cutting-edge visual, audio, and haptic technologies.

Conceptualized only a year prior to opening, it was a short runway from ideation to reality. “We were approached by the CEO of Wynn Resorts, and he really wanted to bring the finest immersive entertainment experience possible to Wynn Palace, which is their flagship property in Macau,” explains Alan Greenberg, CEO, Illuminarium Experiences.

“We had a whole team, including Christie, Rockwell Group, Electrosonic, Holoplot, and Legends project management, come to Macau to look at the space. We developed a technology fit and then we were off and running on construction.”

Part of the initial planning involved the selection of AV technology. “Wynn was looking for the best possible technology solution,” says Greenberg. In working closely with Christie’s Joe Conover and solutions architects, Illuminarium and Wynn Palace selected 29 Christie Griffyn 4K50-RGB pure laser projectors for the venue. The Griffyn 4K50-RGB is the smallest and lightest 50,000 lumen laser projector available today, and its pure laser illumination technology enables it to deliver richer, more highly saturated colors than laser phosphor projectors for exceptional experiences in large-venue applications.

Previous Illuminarium locations have primarily been built to suit, but the new experience was unique in this regard. “We had a very defined space that we had to deal with – we’re inside a major resort,” says Greenberg. “It provides a very expansive entertainment experience for guests at the Wynn Palace.”

Since opening, Illuminarium has been dazzling visitors with its initial opening show, “SPACE: A Journey to the Moon and Beyond” and now “WILD: An Immersive Safari Experience”, an interactive and multi-sensory experience that takes guests to the wild savanna. To ensure that the experience remains spectacular, Christie Professional Services provides 24/7 service and support for the complete AV system in Illuminarium.

Professional Services includes strategic locations worldwide and a comprehensive network of customer service engineers, project managers, and training and service technicians to rapidly dispatch the expertise, parts, and replacements required.

“Illuminarium at Wynn Palace is nothing short of spectacular,” says Joseph Conover, director, Live Events/Immersive Experiences, Christie. “It’s a true testament to the vision of Wynn Palace and Illuminarium to deliver a unique experience for guests and visitors to the resort. We’re grateful to have been given this opportunity to work with a talented group of people on this world-class project.”

“Illuminarium at Wynn Palace combines a high-quality environment with AV technology. It involved quick timelines, and new content – it was a big opportunity for Illuminarium and our technology partners,” says Greenberg. “We’re very proud to have been chosen by Wynn Resorts to bring Illuminarium to Macau.”

  • Madrid Opera House relies on Christie RGB pure laser projection to captivate audiences with stunning visuals

Madrid Opera House relies on Christie RGB pure laser projection to captivate audiences with stunning visuals

The Teatro Real in Madrid, winner of the International Opera Award for Best Opera House in the world, has acquired five Christie® M 4K25 RGB pure laser projectors to enrich its opera, dance, concert, and recital programming with stunning visuals.

The Teatro Real was inaugurated in 1850 and is currently one of the great international centers of opera activity. The building is an architectural mixture with 28 boxes on different floors, in addition to eight prosceniums and the double-height Royal Box. The jewel of the theatre is its 1,472 square meter (15,844 square foot) stage box which accommodates complex scenery changes, including multiple set design elements such as lighting and visuals on stage and in the orchestra pit.

The theatre acquired three Christie lamp-based 3DLP® projectors nine years ago, and recently upgraded to more modern and efficient models with improved color performance. “We are always committed to excellence and that is why we decided to continue with Christie when it came to modernizing our fleet of projectors,” says Fernando Valiente, head of Audiovisuals at the Teatro Real. “We know the result Christie projectors offers is always optimal and allows our facility to provide an experience no other brands offer,” he adds.

After a series of tests in Christie’s demo room in Madrid, the Teatro Real decided that the M 4K25 RGB was the best choice for its needs. “Its RGB pure laser technology that approaches the Rec. 2020 color volume – a color standard closest to what the human eye can see- provided us with color nuance that far surpassed the old lamp technology. In fact, we saw it in Luigi Cherubini’s opera Medea where Christie’s RGB laser technology allowed us to get the punchy reds we needed to project fire and lava onto the stage.”

Another feature of the M 4K25 RGB that caught the attention of the Teatro Real was the small form factor of the equipment: “For us, the weight and size of the projectors are very important elements, since we have to move and hang them in different parts of the theatre, and this particular model is very light (41 kg/90 pounds) and small compared to the old projectors,” says Fernando Valiente.

He also highlights the omnidirectional capability of the equipment: “Thanks to its omnidirectional capabilities, we can place the projectors in any orientation, either vertically, horizontally, or upside down, which gives us great flexibility in the installation.”

The quiet operation of the M 4K25 RGB, which operates at 46.7 dBA in standard mode, deserves special mention: “It is one of the best features of the projector because it makes it possible to finally have projectors inside the stage, something we couldn’t do before,” says Fernando Valiente.

The Audiovisual Department at Teatro Real also valued the compatibility of the lenses of their previous Christie projectors with the new M 4K25 RGB projectors: “This was a great cost saving by reusing the entire set of lenses that we already had,” says Valiente.

In addition, these lenses feature the ILS1 intelligent lens system, which simplifies lens changing—an advantage for live shows—and offers motorized zoom, focus, and offset via remote.

The new Christie RGB pure laser projectors are allowing the Teatro Real to meet the growing demand for visuals in operas: “Artistic directors have realized that projection technology perfectly complements the set design, and in some cases, replaces part of it. This combination enriches the show and delivers a wow factor that impresses audiences,” concludes Valiente.

  • L-Acoustics L Series and L-ISA Immersive Hyperreal Sound Team Up to Create the Moody World of The Outsiders on Broadway, Nominated for 12 Tony Awards®, Including Best Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical

L-Acoustics L Series and L-ISA Immersive Hyperreal Sound Team Up to Create the Moody World of The Outsiders on Broadway, Nominated for 12 Tony Awards®, Including Best Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical

When it was first published in 1967, S.E. Hinton’s coming-of-age novel, The Outsiders, struck a chord with readers with its gritty-yet-tender tale of social and familial upheaval, aptly articulated by an author who was, herself, a teenager. Sixteen years later, celebrated film director Francis Ford Coppola brought the eponymous story to the silver screen with a cast full of young actors that would all go on to become Hollywood A-listers. Fast-forwarding to 2024, The Outsiders is vividly being reimagined once again, this time as a critically acclaimed Broadway musical that is dazzling audiences with its immersive L-ISA technology and the NYC Theater District’s first L-Acoustics L Series loudspeaker deployment. The new show is nominated for 12 Tony Awards® including Best Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical for Sound Designer Cody Spencer.

“People’s expectations of the aural experience in a performance have changed, and I think it’s up to theater artists to stay in front of that,” contends David Strang, Vice President, Audio Sales for PRG, which supplied the L-Acoustics systems for the new production playing at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in Times Square. “This isn’t a movie that you’ll get to watch at home later—it’s live theater—and this new production of The Outsiders truly draws you into the story.”

Like many Broadway houses, the Jacobs Theatre was once a vaudeville venue, designed to project unamplified speech and music. “Acoustics are always a big issue when it comes to Broadway houses, just by their nature, so it definitely was something we spent a lot of time figuring out how to deal with,” says Cody Spencer, adding that L-Acoustics Soundvision design and prediction software was critical in defining the boundaries of coverage, keeping energy away from reflective surfaces and on the audience in every seating area. “It’s a lot of trial and error with these big old vaudeville houses, because before there was amplification, they just spoke loudly, and you could hear them everywhere—and that’s very counterintuitive to what we do with loudspeakers. L-Acoustics is a great speaker choice even for a conventional system design, but we wanted to do something really special and engaging with this show.”

Consequently, Spencer and his team, including L-ISA programmer Stephen Jensen, production audio lead Mike Tracy, and front-of-house engineer Heather Augustine, went all in on immersive sound and L-ISA technology. “The reason that I chose to use L-ISA is because early on, in communication with my director, music department, and choreography team, we wanted the audience to be encompassed by the sound. With much of the show, the audience is ‘inside’ the actors’ heads—it’s a play in which much of the action is being recalled by characters instead of happening in the moment. Using L-ISA, we’re able to get people feeling the sound from all around them at all times. Early on in the show, for instance, our lead character gets kicked in the face, and you can hear the kick, but then you also hear his ears ringing—not just in front of you but all around you. Those kinds of effects help to make you feel like you’re actually part of his world.”

Spencer says that L-ISA also enhances the show’s minimalist live music, an Americana-esque, mostly acoustical ensemble. “In a lot of shows these days, the music is very processed, but we wanted it to be as if you’re listening to this band play in the room with you. We were able to easily do that with L-ISA by separating the band in the system, to attain the spatial sound we’re looking for. It worked well and we’re very happy with how we ended up.”

The system has some unique design aspects. For instance, Augustine’s monitoring array at FOH is its own mini-immersive environment. “She’s in the middle of the house mixing on X8 spatial fills that are right in front of her, and then for surround, she’s got more X8 around her to the sides and behind,” he says. “It mimics the larger arrays that the audience is hearing.”

The frontal array of the system, for orchestra and front mezzanine seating, comprises five Scene hangs of the new long-throw L-Acoustics L2D arrays, spaced across the top of the proscenium. “The Outsiders represents Broadway’s first use of L Series, and the enclosures nicely helped resolve an early design challenge for us,” Spencer notes. “Initially, I wasn’t convinced that we needed them on this show. However, once I learned how far out we had to move the front-of-house speaker points to account for the rain curtain and other effects that needed to be downstage of the proscenium, I plugged them into our Soundvision model and quickly found that L2D gave us three more rows of coverage in front of the orchestra over traditional line array loudspeakers. At that point, L Series was the clear winner for providing better immersive coverage to more of the room’s ‘money seats.’”

Two centrally flown sub arrays of three KS21 each are bolstered by two more KS21 positioned left and right, under the stage. The balcony delay system features five Scene arrays of two A15 Focus flanking Extension arrays of two A15 Wide. Seven spatialized X8 mounted across the face of the stage serve as front-fills for main-floor seats, and various combinations of X12, X8, and 5XT are deployed as other fills, as needed. A combination of LA7.16, LA12X, and LA4X amplified controllers drive the system.

“We also have a row of compact 5XT speakers for the middle of the orchestra that helps get the high end to the very front of the overhang,” he says, “and then another row of X8 as spatial fills to fill in the back of the orchestra underneath the overhang.” The main system’s surround arrays utilize a combination of X8 and A10 enclosures, while the balcony surrounds are four Syva, deployed two per side, he adds.

“The monitoring system on stage for this show is bigger than most entire house PA systems in typical Broadway theaters,” Spencer adds, pointing out that it comprises six X12 flown three per side as stage side-fills, six X12 in two rows of three as overheads, ten X4i spread across stage lip firing stage-ward, for downstage-fill, one X8 on each side of the proscenium arch firing toward center-stage as proscenium fills, and a dozen 5XT in two rows of six as under-platform monitors.

“We wanted to ensure that everyone—not only out in the house but also up on the stage—would be able to hear every single word crystal-clear to best create intimacy, emotion, and connection,” he says. “When you only have a few loudspeakers onstage and the actors are all the way downstage, fostering that connection can be quite a challenge. So we extensively covered the stage to make sure that wherever the actors were, we could turn up various voices or instruments in specific locations to give them exactly what they needed in those positions. And the compact X Series systems very nicely give us the control we were looking for.”

The sound system is managed by a redundant pair of L-ISA Processor II, and the entire setup relies on Milan-AVB for networked routing, which has “been a real lifesaver,” says Spencer. “It just makes life so much easier being able to grab streams and not have to run a whole bunch of copper. Some of our amps are up in a jump that is 60 feet in the air, and the other half of our amps are downstairs. From the amp room we were able to send fiber everywhere, allowing us to grab networks from anywhere and easily pick up speakers, making adjustments or changes to the system fast and simple.”

The Outsiders reflects how Broadway is investing more deeply in immersive sound for its shows. “We’ve been doing different versions of surround-type sound in theaters and on Broadway for years, but the new tools, including L-ISA, make that a whole lot easier and a lot more fun in terms of what you can do with image manipulation,” says Strang. “It used to be a lot more difficult when you were doing it yourself with pan and delay parameters programed into a digital console. L-ISA unlocks creativity for sound designers, mix engineers, and artists.”

  • Christie’s integrated solutions brings Portugal’s largest private bank event to life

Christie’s integrated solutions brings Portugal’s largest private bank event to life

Portugal’s event provider Europalco has once again leveraged Christie® integrated solutions to redefine the standards of corporate event production with a spectacular synchronized multi-projection display for the annual meeting of Millennium BCP, Portugal’s largest private bank, held at Lisbon’s Carlos Lopes Pavilion.

DCE Loving Brands agency organized and created the employee recognition-themed event, which was integrated into all levels of production for the approximately 1,600 people in attendance. Europalco provided a wide range of services, which included sound, lighting, video, cameras, automation, kinetic elements, stage set-up, and furniture.

A gigantic 60 x 8-meter (197 x 26-foot) main screen divided into three sections (each 20 x 8 meters) served as the focal point of the stage. Supported by 12 Christie 30,000 lumen, 4K 3DLP® projectors, a Christie Spyder X80 video processor, and Christie Pandoras Box® Servers for show control, the projection was synchronized with the movement of the screens, to create a dynamic backdrop for discussions and performances.

Europalco designed the central section of the display with innovative functionality. It could be raised and lowered according to the needs of the event using Movecat C1 technology controlled by the I Motion Expert T III SIL3 controller, which was connected to Pandoras Box Servers to synchronize the position of the display and video layers.

Europalco cleverly integrated a 20 meter by 6-meter (65 x 20-foot) LED wall behind the main screen. This secondary display further enriched the visual experience, and provided extra flexibility for content delivery and enhanced the overall depth and dimensionality of the scenography.

The result was an impressive and constantly moving display onto which videos and CCTV of the event were projected, and moved to give way to shows and discussions on stage.

“At Europalco we like to take risks, and to surprise and surpass ourselves,” says Pedro Magalhães, CEO, Europalco. “We always propose something that makes each project special. In this case, it was the giant moving screen that gave enormous dynamism to the event, and produced a wow effect among the attendees.”

He concludes, “It wasn’t easy to light and manage the millions of pixels of 4K content on moving screens, so we relied on Christie’s most powerful projection, processing and show control tools, which were once again up to the task thanks to their strength and reliability.”
