  • L-Acoustics Recalls Speaker Mounts, Prioritizes Safety in Audio Industry

L-Acoustics Recalls Speaker Mounts, Prioritizes Safety in Audio Industry

L-Acoustics has announced a recall of certain speaker mounting brackets following a reported incident in the field. The company is taking action to address potential safety issues with its A-U15i and A-U10i models. If you have L-Acoustics speakers, contact the dealer or integrator who installed the system for more information on replacement mounts.

In an official statement, L-Acoustics said, “At L-Acoustics, safety is our utmost priority.” This commitment was tested earlier this year when the company received a report of an “unusual A-U15i bracket failure,” described as “the first and only such incident since the launch of the bracket in 2020.”

L-Acoustics is known for high-performance speaker systems. Their systems can be heard in houses of worship, large concert venues, and on college campuses around the world.

The company’s response was immediate. “We immediately and proactively issued a safety notice to our global partner network, shipped kits to secure brackets in the field, and launched a thorough investigation,” L-Acoustics stated.

While the full details of the failure remain under scrutiny, L-Acoustics has initiated a series of actions to ensure user safety. The company has developed interim upgrade kits for both the A-U15i and A-U10i models, designed to be installed without removing the loudspeakers.

Additionally, the company suspended further shipments of both the A-U15i and A-U10i mounts to redesign the brackets. Part of the design process will be to “increase its safety rating.”

L-Acoustics plans to provide a long-term solution at no cost to its customers. “The new bracket will be shipped free of charge to affected L-Acoustics clients in the coming months to replace all A-U15i and A-U10i brackets currently used in the field,” the company stated.

As part of the recall, L-Acoustics are also offering compensation to their dealers, integrators, and partners for “time and effort in upgrading and replacing the mounts.”

L-Acoustics started shipping the A-U15i upgrade kits on May 27th, with A-U10i kits following on June 10th. The company will be contacting customers individually to coordinate shipments and urges users to install the upgrades as soon as possible upon receipt.

To incentivize quick action, L-Acoustics is offering a €100 ($108 USD) credit for each bracket confirmed as upgraded. Customers are required to report the serial numbers of upgraded brackets to the company’s customer service department.

L-Acoustics concluded by reaffirming their commitment to their customers and the industry: “We value the trust placed in us and remain committed to upholding the highest standards of safety, quality, and excellence in every L-Acoustics deployment globally.”

This recall highlights the importance of safety in the professional audio industry and demonstrates how companies can respond effectively to potential issues. As L-Acoustics works towards a permanent solution, the audio community watches closely, recognizing that the outcome of this recall could influence future safety protocols across the industry.

  • Winspear Centre Installs Canada’s First L-Acoustics L Series Concert Sound System

Winspear Centre Installs Canada’s First L-Acoustics L Series Concert Sound System

From its grand opening in 1997, the Francis Winspear Centre for Music’s 1,716-seat Enmax Hall has served as the primary performance space for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. But the resplendent concert hall is just as well known for hosting a steady stream of other performers as well—including touring artists from blues, country, folk, jazz, rock, and other genres—in addition to a diverse roster of community events. To best accommodate the room’s wide range of sonic styles, dbi Systems Integration collaborated with L-Acoustics Certified Provider FM Systems to equip the Winspear Centre with Canada’s first permanently installed L Series loudspeaker system.

dbi Systems and FM Systems are shared providers of services to the Winspear Centre, with dbi providing all permanent in-house AV systems and FM providing all production services and rentals. Since 2014, dbi Systems has worked with Winspear Head of Audio Jonas Duffy on a wide variety of short- and long-term plans to allow for ongoing A/V systems upgrades with a purposeful long-range vision.

“As a part of these ongoing system upgrades in 2021, it was decided that it was time to look at replacing the existing house loudspeaker system in the main hall,” says dbi Systems Integration Principal Jerry Van Dyke. “After several years of auditioning products from some of today’s premier loudspeaker manufacturers, L-Acoustics was deemed the loudspeaker of choice for this project. Over the next two years there was collaboration between Winspear Centre, dbi Systems, FM Systems, and L-Acoustics on the design and configuration of the system, which was integrated by dbi Systems.”

The Centre’s prior PA had been installed in 2007 and struggled to meet the demands of current touring acts that were looking for higher SPL capabilities. “As is always the case in our industry, there had been major changes in technology since that system had been installed and the Winspear wanted the performance capabilities of today’s best loudspeaker systems,” notes dbi Associate and Senior Systems Designer Joshua Duguid. “The three major requirements were: premium sonic quality, high SPL capability, and smooth, even coverage throughout the entire room—all of which L-Acoustics was perfectly suited to deliver.”

Originally, the new system design consisted of an assortment of L-Acoustics Kara II loudspeakers, flown KS28 subwoofers, KS21 floor subwoofers, A15i choir-fills and 5XT lip-fills. However, two weeks before the bid submission deadline, dbi Systems learned that L-Acoustics was going to be debuting a new loudspeaker line that would be a “game-changer in the permanent install and touring worlds,” he describes.

Following discussions on performance capabilities, aesthetics, suitability for the room, and rider acceptance, L Series was chosen for Winspear’s main chamber hall. “After modeling the room with the L2/L2D enclosures, it was clear that the L Series concert sound system would provide even better coverage and superior sonic capabilities in a smaller footprint,” says Van Dyke. While acknowledging that there was a degree of risk in going with a product that dbi Systems had no prior experience with, it was decided that the pedigree of L-Acoustics products and the company’s history of delivering on what it promised made the risk worthwhile. With a great deal of collaboration between Duffy, dbi Systems, and L-Acoustics, the entire system was re-designed in two weeks.

The resulting design now features left and right main arrays of two L2 enclosures over one L2D per side, with a third central array planned to be flown later this summer. For low frequency reinforcement, four KS21 subs arranged in cardioid configuration sit on both the far left and right sides of the stage, directly below the main arrays. Eleven ultra-compact X4i in a custom RAL color are mounted across the stage face for low-SPL front-fill, while six larger X8 supply high-SPL front-fill. Onstage, two clusters of two A10 Focus—mounted to the top back sides of the L Series hangs—serve as stage monitors for the choir loft.

Out in the house, 14 compact 5XT are mounted to the ceiling of the underbalcony area for additional fill, with two X8 functioning as dress circle loge fills. The FOH mix position benefits from a near-field monitoring setup of two 5XT paired with a single SB10i sub, while a projection booth/mother’s room benefits from three X8 and one SB10i. The venue’s lobby area also features an L-Acoustics system comprised of six Soka accompanied by six more SB10i.

Milan-AVB is used as the audio signal path for the entire system. “With amplifiers being in five different room locations at distances between them being up to 500 feet, Milan-AVB was integral to this design,” says Duguid. “The Winspear venue relies heavily on AVoIP, and already had Dante, Q-SYS, and Video over IP in place. A large part of this install was upgrading and redesigning the network infrastructure. Redundancy was key, and many steps were taken in the design/install to ensure the system always functions.” Two fully independent switching infrastructures were connected by redundant fiber trunks, and mission-critical devices are on two separate UPS circuits. All of the L-Acoustics amplified controllers also utilize the 24-volt backup to ensure minimal downtime in the event of a power outage.

The first show after the system commissioning was, appropriately, an Edmonton Symphony Orchestra concert—a tribute to the music of Canadian-American singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. “We heard so many comments from the guests that night on how amazing our new system sounded and looked,” says Winspear’s Jonas Duffy. “Our technicians were amazed at how smooth the coverage was. Our old system had spots in the room where you would hear the gaps or interactions between the array boxes, but the new L Series system is completely seamless, and it sounds great all the way back in the fourth-floor gallery.”

Duffy shares that the L2/L2D system has received many positive comments from both staff and administrators on how much cleaner and less imposing the look of the loudspeakers are. “Also, from the audience’s perspective, you cannot see individual array boxes or any speaker cables, and because the L Series arrays are flown much higher than the previous ones, they leave more room for our venue’s beauty to shine through.”

Beyond the main chamber system, the booth and projection/mother’s room systems offer a sonic experience that is virtually identical to that of being in the main chamber. For events where technicians need to mix from inside the sealed booth, they can be sure they are making sonic choices that match what the audience hears.

“L-Acoustics L Series was an excellent choice for this project,” enthuses dbi Systems Consultant Jordan Van Dyke. “The sonic performance and SPL capabilities of this system ensure that it will meet or exceed virtually any guest act rider for years to come. For Edmonton Symphony concerts, which are the most common events in the venue, the fact that this system does not require subs to be full-range cleans up the stage exceptionally, and the ability to have the arrays in cardioid or supercardioid mode gives the musicians onstage a much-improved experience as well.”

“Our team here at dbi realizes that an opportunity like this does not come along very often, and to see it happen at a venue that we have been partnered with for over ten years is extremely satisfying,” Van Dyke adds. “This project has been years in the making, and to see it all come together was magical. Watching the reactions of the staff at the Winspear when the system was turned on for the first time, the looks of shock and awe, followed by silence and spontaneous applause, is a moment that we will never forget.”

Theory Professional made its official debut at InfoComm 2023 and wowed crowds with demonstrations of its small but highly capable ic6, 6.5” in-ceiling loudspeaker. Via careful processing and computer-optimized tuned ports, the ic6 delivers exceptional low-frequency bandwidth, punch and resolution, plus extremely wide dispersion. Up until now the ic6 could be paired with Theory’s optional all-weather grille or installed in open-ceiling and exposed environments when integrated into one of Theory’s ic6 pendant housings.

Building on Theory’s ic6 Acoustic CoreTM platform, the new ic6-Bollard is the ic6 loudspeaker installed into an elegant Dark Chocolate (and paintable) stainless steel Bollard housing. Once integrated, the ic6-Bollard becomes a full-range landscape loudspeaker providing 360-degrees of flawless, uniform, coverage. Pair it with the new iws12-Bollard subwoofer and you can reach sound reinforcement levels in your landscape – a rarity outdoors.

For large, distributed installs, you can use hundreds of ic6-Bollard loudspeakers. The ic6 includes a switch-selectable 70V/100v transformer that can be driven direct by Theory’s DLC-250.4d 4-channel loudspeaker controller. The DLC-250.4d can drive up to 16 Theory 16-ohm loudspeakers in Lo-Z mode, or up to 64 in Hi-Z mode – all from a half rack chassis.

    iws12-Bollard – 12” Landscape Subwoofer

Theory has also become known for deep, visceral bass from surprisingly compact enclosures. The Theory iws12-SPKR model speaker assembly includes a 12-inch, 1,400 Watt, 4-inch voice coil long throw woofer that can be integrated into the popular Theory iws12-6 in-wall subwoofer and the highly flexible Theory iws12-9 architectural subwoofer. With the introduction of the iws12-Bollard, now that superior iws12-SPKR performance can be enjoyed outdoors. When mounted inside the new iws12-Bollard housing and installed outdoors you get truly astonishing high-energy low frequencies in your landscape.

“Theory is disrupting the status quo with a small stable of highly capable and flexible audio products, and the ic6 and iws12 are perfect examples of that,” said Paul Hales, CEO and Product Designer for Theory

Professional. “Those two Theory loudspeakers can be used for in-ceiling, pendant, high-moisture, in-wall, surface-mount – and now – landscape installations, all while providing premium levels of audio performance and design.”

The Theory ic6-Bollard and iws12-Bollard will be available in Q4 2024. To see and hear the new landscape loudspeakers, visit InfoComm 2024 Booth: C-9901 and Audio Demo Room: N118

Waterfall Audio, founded in 1996, specializes in glass-made speakers for luxury audio visuals. With precision glass cutting and a focus on performance and elegance, the company distributes in over 50 countries.

Waterfall Audio unveiled the Niagara XT series of floorstanding loudspeakers at ISE 2024. These speakers feature a unique fully transparent platinum safety glass enclosure, custom-built mid/bass Atohm drivers with JETSTREAM damping technology, and attention to detail such as hand-stitched Nappa Leather speaker bases and unique glass horn tweeter design in the XT3 model.

The Niagara XT series represents a significant breakthrough in loudspeaker design and performance, offering a blend of haute couture elegance and exceptional sound quality. With meticulous craftsmanship, advanced technology, and customizable options, the series aims to delight integrators, interior designers, and clients seeking both aesthetic sophistication and top-tier audio performance for luxury home cinema, media rooms, and hi-fi projects.

Waterfall Audio unveiled its era-defining Niagara XT series of floorstanding loudspeakers at ISE 2024. Setting a supremely stylish, new landmark for loudspeaker design and performance, the Niagara XT series marry a refined sense of haute couture elegance with an extraordinarily clear, authentic and vibrant sound.

“Niagara XT dramatically moves the needle in terms of what is achievable in contemporary loudspeakers,” says Cedric Aubriot, CEO and Founder of Waterfall Audio. “Using all our expertise in loudspeaker aesthetics, materials and performance, we have created a beautiful new series for luxury home cinema, media room and hi-fi projects that will not only be a striking addition to any interior but will also produce audio of magical precision and quality. Visitors to ISE 2024 were among the privileged few to see and hear this significant breakthrough, one that will delight integrators, interior designers and their clients for many years to come.”

The Niagara XT Series features three brand-new models which all deliver a richly detailed, open and natural-sounding, powerful audio experience. Contained within a unique fully transparent platinum safety glass enclosure (XT2 and XT3: 10mm thick; XT1: 6mm thick), the Niagara XT Series comes alive in natural light, subtly reflecting and refracting sunbeams throughout the day. Custom built mid/bass Atohm drivers appear as if they are suspended in mid-air and are under-pinned by an ultra-low frequency 21cm passive driver in a down-firing position in the solid, CNC cut , brushed tapered aluminium base.

These drivers are equipped with JETSTREAM damping technology, developed in house by Waterfall Audio, to maximise performance and ensure the mechanical decoupling of the mid-bass driver from the glass structure. JETSTREAM allows for a deeper and faster bass with a smoother response in the mid and high range, optimised heat dissipation and superb control of the rear wave on the cone.

Waterfall Audio has also scaled new heights in attention to detail, craftsmanship and finesse with the Niagara XT Series. For example, the speaker base is housed in luxurious, hand stitched Nappa Leather, renowned for its smooth grain, softness and durability. Nappa leather is the interior fabric of choice for premium automotive brands, including Mercedes and Porsche.

The top of the range Niagara XT3 (1200mm x 300mm x 320mm / 500w output) is the ultimate choice for a clean, luxurious aesthetic with its unique glass horn tweeter design. Mechanically decoupled from the main speaker body, this tweeter reproduces medium-high frequencies in a fabulous, pure and expressive way. It comprises 11 mechanical glass parts which are precision engineered and then hand assembled using the same techniques as those employed in luxury jewellery factories.

The Niagara XT1 and XT2 each feature a signature wood horn tweeter. The XT1 (991mm height x 250mm width x 281mm depth / 400w output) and larger XT2 (1169mm x 300mm x 346mm / 500w output) are available in a Classic version with an oiled beech wood tweeter finish. An Exclusive option is proposed with alternative wood finishes, such as walnut, to suit the particular interior tastes of the client. Offering an infinite variety of colours, textures, grains, the wood is individually selected, paired and matched for each speaker.

  • Valley Community Church Finds High Point in L-Acoustics A Series Pro Audio System

Valley Community Church Finds High Point in L-Acoustics A Series Pro Audio System

Over the past 55 years, Valley Community Church (VCC) in the East Bay suburb of Pleasanton, has focused a large measure of its ministry efforts on providing humanitarian aid and compassionate service to its neighbors. From feeding the hungry and helping the local homeless to supporting businesses, non-profits, and outreach programs through donations from its Inklings coffeehouse, the church is known for practicing what it preaches: to embrace a welcoming and giving spirit.

In recent years, VCC’s weekly message from the pulpit has been a bit harder to hear; not because it’s not being well-received by members and visitors, but because the sanctuary’s existing PA system was showing its age. “They were experiencing sound quality issues with their older, powered line array, and after several attempts to tune it, they knew it was at the end-of-life for that product, especially as compared to today’s technology and sonic standards,” notes Chuck Mitchell, CEO of Los Alamitos-based TechArts, an L-Acoustics Certified Provider since 2020 that was brought in to perform an audio retrofit for the church’s 600-seat worship space.

“The client initially had their eyes on other loudspeaker manufacturers that actually required a higher budget to compete,” he adds. “While L-Acoustics is a premium brand, the cost-effective A Series manages to combine top performance with a very attractive price.”

The dream: an L-Acoustics professional sound system

“I have been a fan of L-Acoustics since hearing V-DOSC back in the ’90s,” shares John Heyer, VCC’s technical director since 2016. “I didn’t think it was possible to even consider a high-end system from them. We were going around to a few churches and other venues to listen to their systems when we told TechArts what we were looking for and gave them our proposed budget. Chuck and his team came in under that number with an L-Acoustics solution, which was something that we had only dreamed about.

“We then found out that a local theatre and music venue had some A10 arrays, and their technical director graciously set up a demo for us to hear the A Series. What ultimately finalized it for me was experiencing that system in person. Even without subs, the clarity of the full-range source, the speech intelligibility, and the amazing venue coverage they provided with so few

enclosures was incredible. When Chuck came to us with a Soundvision design showing our predicted coverage, we knew it was absolutely the right choice for us.”

VCC’s new loudspeaker setup is relatively simple but highly effective featuring three A15i Focus over one A15i Wide per side, plus two KS21i subs hung behind each main array. Six ultra-compact 5XT coaxial enclosures spread out across the stage lip serve as front-fills, while three LA4X and a single LA2Xi power the entire system.

Keeping energy on the audience with Panflex

“This system is a night-and-day difference from our old powered PA,” Heyer enthuses. “The A15i arrays have provided a new depth to the overall mix during worship and a new level of vocal intelligibility in both our worship and teaching times. With fewer boxes, we have more uniform coverage throughout the sanctuary, both on the main floor and in the balcony. It was even able to give us increased coverage under the balcony with no need for fills. The Panflex feature of the A Series is helping us keep a lot of energy off of the side walls, and the addition of front-fills have made every seat in the room a great-sounding spot. Also, we now have so much headroom! We were initially looking at the smaller A10i models, but I think we made the right choice in getting that increased dB with the A15i. I always like having that extra room when we need it for the worship team.

“We are incredibly thankful to both L-Acoustics and TechArts for making this all happen so quickly,” he continues. “We had budgeted and planned for so long to make an upgrade to our system, and knowing that we had an amazing fully functional system in place for Christmas was a great relief to our leadership team. We are beyond impressed with the entire design and installation process. There have been zero second thoughts on whether or not we made the correct decision. The TechArts team have gone above and beyond with support from the very beginning, and even now, several months after the installation, they continue to offer us advice and assistance. It’s truly been the best-quality service for the best-quality product.”
