  • CEDIA Leads Industry Efforts to Establish “Technology Integrator” as U.S.-recognized Occupation

CEDIA Leads Industry Efforts to Establish “Technology Integrator” as U.S.-recognized Occupation

CEDIA, established in 1989, advocates for smart home professionals, promotes advancements, and educates on technology, hosting events like Integrated Systems Europe and CEDIA Expo.

CEDIA is advocating for the establishment of a distinct “Technology Integrator” occupational code within the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. This initiative aims to better recognize the unique and diverse skills of technology integrators, who are currently misclassified under the electrical trade.

The current classification does not accurately reflect the broad expertise of technology integrators in areas like networking, audiovisual systems, and smart home technologies. A separate SOC code would ensure proper recognition and support for these professionals, highlighting their distinct role in the smart home technology industry.

CEDIA, the Association for Smart Home Professionals™, announced the latest step in ongoing advocacy efforts, this time to establish the Technology Integrator occupational code within the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. This initiative is a crucial part of CEDIA’s broader mission to support its members and advance the smart home technology industry.

The U.S. Government recently announced the review of the 2018 SOC for potential revision in 2028. This review marks the beginning of the revision process, which includes consideration of new detailed occupations. It is critical that technology integrators are recognized with a separate SOC occupational code in this revision, as they are currently misclassified as a subset of the electrical trade.

“Technology integrators possess a unique and diverse skill set that distinguishes them from all other trades,” said Daryl Friedman, global chief executive officer and president for CEDIA. “Their work encompasses a broad range of expertise, including networking, audiovisual systems, automation and smart home technologies, which requires an accurate and distinct classification within the SOC system.”

CEDIA, along with other industry stakeholders, is actively preparing comments for the SOC Policy Committee to advocate for the establishment of the Technology Integrator occupational code. By doing so, CEDIA aims to ensure that the professional contributions of technology integrators are accurately recognized and classified. In addition to submitting comments to the SOC Policy Committee, CEDIA is working with Congress to create a letter of support and is urging CEDIA members and the wider community to engage with their Congressional leadership. By encouraging Congress to support this initiative, the aim is to bring greater awareness to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) about the importance of establishing a separate occupational code for technology integrators. To get involved, CEDIA is encouraging its members to engage with their Congressional leadership by utilizing the pre-created template by August 12, 2024. Members will receive an email with the template and a prompt to participate.

“We call on our members and industry partners to join us in this critical advocacy effort,” added Friedman. “Your support can make a significant impact by reaching out to Congressional leaders and urging them to sign a letter to the BLS, emphasizing the need for this new detailed occupational code.”

CEDIA’s recent efforts are a follow-up to its recent “Smart Home Day on Capitol Hill,” the first ever advocacy day in Washington, DC for the custom integration industry. It also filed comments with the FCC, educating the commission on the critical work of integrators. These efforts expand CEDIA’s historical state-based work protecting the industry from harmful regulation, including an in-person delegation to Lansing, Michigan in October.

This powerful tool, already used by many top home technology integrators, design and build professionals, and manufacturers, helps prospective clients understand realistic installed cost budget ranges for their home technology projects. Instead of asking homeowners their budget – which often leads to uncertainty and confusion – the HTA Technology Budget Calculator provides a clear, informed starting point for discussions.

    New Features and Enhancements

The newly updated HTA Technology Budget Calculator brings several key enhancements, most notably the addition of lighting fixtures. With the expert input of industry professionals Patrick Laidlaw of AiSPiRE/WAC, Mike Libman of DMF, and David Warfel of Light Can Help You, the tool now includes architectural lighting fixtures. This ensures that homeowners, architects, interior designers, and builders are aware of the advanced lighting solutions that can impact the look, feel, ambiance, and wellness of their homes. It also informs them that home technology integrators are a resource for lighting fixtures, which most are unaware of. As part of this upgrade, the HTA also created a consumer-friendly glossary of key lighting terms that can be found here: https://htacertified.org/app/lighting-terms.

“The cost of good lighting is the top question clients ask, and HTA’s updated budgeting tool provides an important first step towards real answers,” said David Warfel, founding designer at Light Can Help You. “Little matters more to clients than their budget; the new lighting section in the HTA Budget Calculator is a great tool to get the conversation started. In addition to providing budget ranges for fixtures, controls, and shades, the calculator cleverly introduces the concept of performance fixtures and advanced color technologies. This should enable better conversations from the beginning when it comes to lighting.”

Partners May Embed the HTA Budget Calculator

The following entities can embed the budget calculator on their websites with a unique embed code: HTA Certified integrators, HTA Supporting Brand members, rep firms, and related industry associations. Notably, the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) has already embedded the HTA budget calculator in the members-only knowledge section of its website.

    Comprehensive Update List

    1. Lighting Fixtures: Provides basic information and budget ranges to start conversations on this complex topic.
    2. Networks / Wi-Fi Updates: Added a new “Professional” category between “Consumer-grade” and “Enterprise-grade.”
    3. Emphasis on Lighting and Shades: These topics have been moved near the top of the calculator.
    4. Emailed Reports: Improved formatting for emailed budget results.
    5. Embedded Calculator Color Matching: Customizable header color to match the target website’s color theme.

Benefits of the HTA Technology Budget Calculator

The HTA Technology Budget Calculator addresses several critical challenges home technology integrators and their clients face. Many prospective clients experience sticker shock due to a lack of awareness about realistic technology costs, often leading them to shop around. The HTA Technology Budget Calculator helps set realistic expectations from the start, reducing this issue. Asking clients for their budget is often uncomfortable for the client and unproductive; the HTA Technology Budget Calculator provides a more effective way to determine budget ranges through a simple, client-driven process. By prequalifying clients, the calculator saves time and reduces the need for extensive value engineering of proposals. It is also a valuable tool for architects, builders, and designers, helping them gather necessary information and provide accurate estimates to their clients. Integrators using the HTA budget calculator benefit from higher sales closing ratios and more efficient sales operations.

“From the moment the Custom Integration channel started recognizing the lighting category, the most common question from Integrators—and clients, to them-was how much does good lighting cost? This question has now been addressed simply with the Lighting Budget Calculator by HTA”, says Patrick Laidlaw, Director of Business Development-Integration at AiSPiRE & WAC Lighting. “The calculator is easy to use and informative as it defines the differences between four levels of lighting, from best to worst. Clients simply put in the percentage of their home they would like of each level, and it calculates estimated lighting cost ranges right before their eyes. It also expedites the discussions of lighting in the home as part of the technology package”.

Just Add Power Brings the Game to CEDIA 2024

Just Add Power offers high-quality AV-over-IP distribution solutions that increase in value over time. They respect users’ investment, provide free firmware updates, and offer easy installation and use.

Just Add Power will showcase its latest AV-over-IP solutions at CEDIA Expo 2024, including the MaxColor™ 4K60 Series MC-TXWP1 wall plate transmitter, MC-QX MaxColor 4K60 Tiling and Warping transmitter, and MC-TX3 MaxColor 4K60 Series transmitter. They will also host a daily guitar giveaway in support of the Guitars 4 Vets (G4V) program and sponsor the CEDIA Expo Pickleball Meet-Up.

Just Add Power, a leader in AV-over-IP distribution, will display its latest solutions in Booth 3333 at CEDIA Expo 2024, Sept. 5-7 in Denver. At the booth will be the company’s new award-winning MaxColor™ 4K60 Series MC-TXWP1 wall plate transmitter, MC-QX MaxColor 4K60 Tiling and Warping transmitter, and the AES67-capable MC-TX3 MaxColor 4K60 Series transmitter. The 8th annual daily guitar giveaway will once again be a highlight at the Just Add Power booth, helping to raise awareness for the Guitars 4 Vets (G4V) program. Just Add Power is also a sponsor of the first-ever CEDIA Expo Pickleball Meet-Up taking place on Sept. 3 at the Gates Tennis Center.

“One popular trend is 4K60 supported with a native AV-over-IP distribution chain and with the features and capabilities to fit the project — whether that’s BYOD input; tiling and warping video wall capabilities; or AES67 audio support, ” said Taft Stricklin, chief sales officer for Just Add Power. “At CEDIA, you’ll see all the new flavors of our MaxColor Series for homes and resimercial applications that want the UHD upgrade. Of course, we also like to have fun and let our hair down, so come see us at the Pickleball Meet-up, and during the show, stop by our booth to be entered into our guitar giveaway.”

The new Just Add Power MaxColor MC-TXWP1 PoE, two-gang HDMI wall plate transmitter provides integrators with a convenient HDMI port that natively supports 4K60 input from any source. It distributes 4K UHD video from connected 4K BYOD sources with no downscaling or subsampling. With the MC-TXWP1, 4K60/4:4:4/36-bit video can be distributed over a 1Gb managed network using Cat 5e/Cat 6 cable. It delivers instant, seamless switching; 4K up- and downscaling; and HDR management while supporting all lossless audio formats and HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision for the best viewing experience. To match any décor, the unit’s faceplate is available in black, white, or custom colors.

The Just Add Power MC-QX MaxColor 4K60 Tiling and Warping Transmitter combines the company’s MaxColor technology, 4K network video tiler, and Warp Engine technology. It allows 4K60 source devices to be displayed on a single screen instantly, along with source rotation capabilities. Users can simultaneously watch up to four 4K60 video sources in multiple formats, including single-screen, video wall, or tiled video. With the MC-QX warping capability, installers can rotate any source image in a Just Add Power matrix — cable boxes, media players, game systems, cameras, and more — in 0.1-degree increments in real time with incredibly low latency. The rotated image can then be sent to an unlimited number of receivers in the network, allowing for the creation of massive artistic video walls using a single MC-QX.

The MC-TX3 MaxColor 4K60 Series Transmitter natively supports 4K60 in and out, allowing end users to play Ultra HD video from any 4K source and device now available, along with compatibility for AES67 audio systems. With the MC-TX3, video at 12-bit color and 4:4:4 chroma can be distributed over Cat 5/Cat 6 cable. Like the MaxColor MC-TX2, the new MC-TX3 transmitter offers power over USB-C, supporting KVM or, for example, a USB web camera signal over IP. Further, it supports MPEG downstreaming for connected devices, such as a laptop or tablet. Even more, it supports input for LPCM audio up to eight channels, AES67 audio send and receive up to eight channels, and AES67 audio injection into any Just Add Power network. Like many other transmitters in the Just Add Power lineup, it includes HDMI pass-through; control of endpoints via RS-232, IR, and CEC; and Image Pull, which allows users to preview an image from any source or display from any web browser or control system at up to 10 fps.

At the booth, there will be daily guitar giveaways to bring greater awareness to G4V’s mission to provide relief to struggling veterans through the healing power of music and community. Just Add Power has supported the cause for eight years, donating guitars to the program annually. This year, the company is donating three guitars to G4V’s cause, and CEDIA Expo attendees can enter for a chance to win a Jackson Monarkh guitar, an ESP LTD electric guitar with a flamed maple top, or a Players Series white on white Fender Stratocaster.
