    Snap One and ADI Drive Innovation at The Shack Indoor Golf Club

    The conditions are always perfect for a round of golf at The Shack Indoor Golf Club in Glenview, Illinois. Whether it’s day or night, rain or shine, both experts and novices can practice and compete on over 100 championship courses, all brought to life on cutting-edge Trackman golf simulators.

    The experience is further elevated by top-tier audio, video, and automation components from Snap One, now part of ADI. These advanced technologies are seamlessly integrated throughout the facility, enhancing the simulation environments without intruding on the experience. Long-time Snap One + ADI customer, Quality Connections Audio & Video Design (QCAV), worked closely with The Shack’s owners to craft a dynamic, PGA-style entertainment venue that appeals to all ages and skill levels. Whether guests are looking to spend an hour perfecting their swing or an entire day competing on iconic courses, the custom-designed AV and automation systems from QCAV give every player an edge in their gameplay.

    QCAV was introduced to the project just as the 8,000-square-foot building was being gutted, giving the team a clean slate to work with. The owners envisioned a state-of-the-art golf facility, where cutting-edge technology was a must. Life-size displays, distributed audio and video, surveillance, and automation — The Shack would have it all, and with the expertise of Snap One and QCAV, that vision became a reality.

    Tee Time for Technology

    Roughly 78 devices from Snap One are providing quality entertainment, security and control to The Shack. While managing so many devices might seem overwhelming, QCAV made it effortless with a custom-programmed Control4 automation system integrated with the OvrC remote management platform.

    “OvrC puts everything at our fingertips,” says August Arrigo, QCAV principal.

    He and his team can access the convenient cloud-based management solutions to ensure all Snap One technologies are operating optimally. If something seems problematic, the QCAV techs

    can troubleshoot from wherever they are — no need to go directly to The Shack, which saves time for both QVAC and its clients. Often, a simple reboot is the answer, and QVAC can initiate it via the WattBox IP power conditioners installed at each electrical outlet. This is rarely necessary, according to Arrigo, but it gives the client and QVAC a safety net just in case.

    “If a problem is detected, we can fix it without having to visit The Shack and have the system up and running within a few minutes,” Arrigo says. If we do need to perform an onsite inspection and remedy, WattBox allows us to see exactly which piece of equipment is affected so we can bring the right replacement or tools to fix it.” Luma-brand surveillance cameras also provide insight, recording footage captured inside and outside to a dedicated server, which The Shack managers and owners can review when necessary.

    Into the Swing of It

    The Shack managers, meanwhile, utilize a simple Control4 app on a dedicated iPad behind the restaurant bar to supervise the numerous Snap One technologies, including the larger-than-life displays featured in the six golf simulation bays. To extend the video enjoyment beyond virtual golf sessions, QCAV integrated a Binary MoIP (media over IP) solution from Snap One to distribute other entertainment content from a central rack of AV components to any or all displays. This includes 30 Samsung TVs mounted on poles between each simulation bay and occupying the bar/restaurant area.

    “When the simulators aren’t being used, the 150-inch displays and a 220-inch display in a jumbo bay with stadium-style seating, can show the SuperBowl, golf tournaments, movies, and more, while the Samsung displays present something completely different,” says Arrigo. The Shack managers select and direct the choice media via a custom Control4 app on a dedicated iPad secured on a wall-mounted LaunchPort charging station. For the quad-screen at the bar, they can choose separate programs for each of the four individual displays or spread one show across all four displays.

    To streamline an otherwise tedious process of turning the displays on and off, QCAV programmed special open and close commands into The Shack’s central automation processor. Just a single touch of a button on the iPad signals the Control4 EA-3 controller to turn on and off all six simulation displays and 30 TVs. Audio is seamlessly integrated, traveling with the video via a Triad audio matrix and LEA amplifiers to Snap One Episode-brand loudspeakers in each simulation location and other parts of the property. QCAV divided the audio distribution system into three independent zones enabling music from components in the AV rack to play at the bar/restaurant while golfers hear audio from a sports broadcast in the simulation area.

    Telling untold stories

    Opened in summer 2023 at Gadsden’s Wharf in Charleston, South Carolina – one of America’s most historically sacred slave trading ports – the International African American Museum (IAAM) honors the untold stories of the African American journey.

    Provided with the support of Sony’s Global Social Justice Fund, which champions social justice and anti-racist initiatives while fostering diversity, equity and inclusion around the world, the display technology engages visitors with history, brings artifacts to life and expands on stories introduced in the museum. Alongside Crystal LED video walls, BRAVIA 4K professional displays, 4K SXRD and Full HD laser projectors, AV hardware provided by Sony includes wireless microphone systems.

    Amplifying the African American journey

    The museum sought technology that would amplify the experiences of the African American journey for today’s digital natives in a manner that deepens the narrative with added levels of connection and immersion.

    “Every good museum focuses on the stories and storytelling,” says Dr. Tonya M. Matthews, President and Chief Executive Officer of IAAM. “For an African American History Museum in particular, there’s added weight and added excitement when African Americans get to tell their own story because for so long that wasn’t what we saw in museums. I’m very excited about the way that the museum is using technology to activate and enhance these stories.”

    “As a new museum, we’ve leaned into technology as a way to make the story feel much more real,” explains Malika Pryor, Chief Learning and Engagement Officer. “When someone’s walking into the exhibition space for the first time, they come into contact with the Transatlantic Experience. I refer to that as this grounding moment for the visitor because what they’re going to see on these eight screens before them is this immersive visual and sonic experience. That gives them a firm grasp of what they’re going to see as they’re moving through the other exhibitions and installations.”

    Powerful imagery

    Museum visitors are greeted by eight high-brightness Crystal LED video walls, each measuring 6 ft wide by 7 ft tall (1.8 x 2.1 m). The content includes a mix of powerful historical and modern imagery and photography that highlights and juxtaposes the African American experience. Guests then move into the Atlantic Worlds Gallery, dominated by a huge 32 ft by 7 ft (9.8 x 2.1 m) Crystal LED wall with 7,680 x 1,620 pixel resolution. It overlooks an exceptional view of the Atlantic Ocean and Gadsden’s Wharf, the actual port of entry for slaves, helping to reclaim the location’s complex associations and turn it into a place of empowerment, education, conversation, and understanding.

    “It’s amazing technology,” confirms Bobby Teachey II, the Project Manager who worked with the Solomon Group to install and set up the new museum’s AV equipment. “The scale of the screen in the Atlantic Worlds Gallery and the definition of the graphics will connect people in a different way. And the vibrant colors and details – such as sweat coming off of somebody’s head – there’s so much information and such powerful imagery that visitors are going to want to stand in front of it for a long time to catch all of the different stories.”

    Technology with a purpose

    In addition, the museum uses Sony projectors, lenses and wireless audio solutions throughout its space. Projectors help screen content, support wall-mapped content and share footage in rotating exhibits and screening rooms, as well as in the IAAM’s Center for Family History, an important space for tracing genealogy and connecting the dots of people’s pasts.

     

    Connecting with digitally literate audiences

    Dr. Matthews also acknowledges technology’s ability to move the IAAM outside their facility. “We also have virtual exhibitions, which we launched before we opened our physical doors. This has allowed membership and interest to grow around the nation and the globe. Technology allows us to serve those who may not physically enter our space through virtual exhibitions.”

    She maintains that technology enables the IAAM to engage with a more digitally savvy audience. “Digital natives have a high standard for technology and expect it to do more than just sit there. They expect technology to be used to engage them – we are particularly positioned to do that.”

    Sony’s support of the museum, through the company’s Global Social Justice Fund, is also viewed as instrumental by their personnel. “For museums and businesses in the non-profit sector, what we’re trying to do is provide access,” says Dr. Matthews. “We are trying to deliver more than our community in and of itself can support. So, it’s really important to have corporate partners who understand that and are as equally committed as we are. And I must give a nod to partners who lean into the more difficult stories, who lean into the impact of telling difficult stories well and who understand that the reason we’re sharing these stories and learning this history is not just about yesterday, but it’s about today and it’s about tomorrow.”

    “Sony being able to step up and provide a lot of the donated technology and expertise is massive,” concludes Teachey.

    Carousel Digital Signage is helping high schools in Minnesota’s fourth-largest district elevate communications with Carousel Cloud software. Serving roughly 29,000 students in the southern suburbs of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Independent School District 196 is acclaimed for the quality of its academics, arts, and athletics programs.

    At Eagan High School just south of Minneapolis, migrating to digital signage communications was necessary due to the sheer number of events taking place any given week. The school is buzzing day and night with classes, sports practices, and theatre rehearsals, as well as community activities—all of which must keep students, staff, and other participants informed about meetings, opportunities, and events. Apple Valley High School in Apple Valley, Minn., also needs an intuitive method for delivering up-to-the-minute news about its various goings-on, and to celebrate individual student achievements.

    All of this drove the decision to invest in Carousel Cloud digital signage management software to support the displays positioned throughout the two facilities.

    “In a school district of our size, communication is all-important. We use digital communication simply because there are so many things going on in our schools,” said Paul Saxton, broadcast journalism teacher at Eagan High School. “Carousel Cloud is powerful, yet easy to use.     Sony Electronics released SDK version 2.4.0 for its Spatial Reality Displays, adding multi-display support, viewer engagement logs, and extended development platform compatibility. Accompanying this, firmware version 1.30.00 for the ELF-SR2 model will improve facial recognition, expand color gamut, and introduce side-by-side stereoscopic 3D support.

With the addition of multi-display support, viewer log functionality, and extended development platform compatibility, this update empowers content creators to produce even more immersive and high-impact 3D content.

    Multi-Display Support for Expansive 3D Experiences

    SDK version 2.4.0 introduces the ability to combine multiple Spatial Reality Displays for larger and more engaging visual setups. This new functionality opens exciting opportunities across various industries, from museums and exhibitions to digital signage:

    • Vertical Array: Stack up to four displays for life-sized, full-body figures or tall content that brings a lifelike presence to immersive installations.
    • Horizontal Array: Align up to three displays for wide-screen, panoramic 3D content, ideal for large-scale presentations and events.
    • Grid Array: Create a 2×2 grid of four displays, producing the equivalent of a 55-inch screen, perfect for displaying large objects or creating impactful viewing experiences.

    Viewer Log for Performance Insights

    Another key feature of SDK 2.4.0 is the new viewer log capability. This tool allows content creators to gather quantitative data on viewer engagement, including the number of viewers and viewing duration, providing valuable insights into the performance of 3D content at exhibitions, events, and installations.     Upcoming Firmware Version 1.30.00 Further Enhances Display Performance

    Alongside the SDK release, Sony will introduce firmware version 1.30.00 for the ELF-SR2 model at the end of November 2024. This firmware update builds on the display’s capabilities by improving facial recognition performance, making the 3D viewing experience even smoother and more seamless. Additionally, it expands color gamut support with DCI-P3 and Rec.2020 compatibility, allowing for more vibrant and accurate color reproduction. The firmware also introduces side-by-side stereoscopic 3D viewing, which can be activated through the function (Fn) button, further enhancing the depth and realism of 3D content.

    Together, SDK 2.4.0 and firmware 1.30.00 mark a significant step forward in Sony’s commitment to delivering the best tools for 3D content creation and immersive display, offering creators more control, flexibility, and impact.

    VITEC creates a dynamic IPTV and digital signage solution for GL Events’ CO’Met Arena

    CO’Met Arena is a newly opened event complex in the metropolis of Orléans, France. The venue is designed to host large-scale international sporting, cultural and business events and features multiple spaces, including a four-hall exhibition centre, convention centre, and sports hall which can accommodate up to 10,000 people. When designing the new facility, the owners of the CO’Met Arena wanted to create a dynamic visual experience for visitors by installing HD digital signage across the site. The owners also wanted to ensure that networked video content could be managed and distributed efficiently to screens across the multiple venue spaces.

    The client

    The CO’Met project had unique characteristics, including the need to manage the distribution of video content on many screens in the four halls of the exhibition centre, the convention centre, the sports centre and connecting halls throughout the venue. The project presented logistical and content management challenges, as each area needed the capability for content to be shown on the displays in the most appropriate way for each space. For example, visitor information and content from business events can be streamed to the breakout rooms on level two of the facility, while sporting events can be streamed live in the sports hall.

    Given the large number of screens distributed in different locations and the distance between them (up to 15 minutes’ walk between two display areas), plus the subsequent constraints this adds in terms of both during event and everyday operation, the venue management team knew they needed to find the right partner. They were keen to find an integrator that could cope with these challenges, as well as ensure that installation could be carried out during the six-month construction phase.

    The venue management team chose Manganelli Group, a Lille-based systems integration and digital signage expert. Manganelli had previously worked together with VITEC on complex IPTV and digital signage projects at the Decathlon Arena in Lille (formerly the Pierre Mauroy Stadium) and the ParisLongchamp Racecourse. As a consequence, they understood that the VITEC range of encoders, servers and management software was a proven solution that could cope with the unique demands of the project. MTCE Consulting of Poitiers, France, was AV consultant on the project.

    The solution

    The client’s initial request was simple: to provide an excellent user experience for CO’Met visitors and to have technologies worthy of an ‘NBA-type’ arena. Driven by an innovative vision, the client sought to improve interaction with its audience through cutting edge digital signage and IPTV technology. For MTCE, the challenge was to transform this vision into reality. From the first sketches of the project, MTCE immersed itself in the client’s expectations and needs in terms of communication and functional requirements. After several meetings, they developed an exhaustive specification, reflecting both technical and functional needs, as well as locations for display end points. Each step, from design to the selection of service providers, was marked by a commitment to provide a first class service for the client.

    With the help of VITEC and Manganelli, MTCE were able to bring the client’s vision to life and create a captivating digital signage network, with strategically placed screens which guide, inform and entertain visitors. The ease-of-use of the solution allowed for seamless adoption by the end-user. The VITEC IPTV solution also added an extra dimension to the scheme by offering spectators in dressing rooms and hospitality areas the opportunity to follow events live via IPTV.

    The result

    The VITEC solution has enabled CO’Met to achieve a number of benefits, including creating a dynamic visual experience to display, and manage, high-quality and engaging video content. This will help the venue to attract and retain visitors and can be used to educate and inform them. The energy efficient management and distribution of video content is also easy to use and update, which saves time and money, and helps to ensure that the content is always up-to-date.

    “We have used the VITEC system on previous large-scale projects so we knew it would be a good fit for the Co’Met Arena, commented Fabrice Leguay of Manganelli Technology. “VITEC has enabled us to create a dynamic and customised visual experience for visitors to the various event spaces while also creating an efficient and simple content management and delivery operation.”

    The VITEC IPTV system has been a valuable asset to CO’Met and was successfully deployed for the first time when the French handball team played Egypt and won 27-23. The VITEC solution allows the complex to create an effective and engaging visual experience for visitors to its multiple event spaces and has improved content management and operational efficiency.

Drawing on my personal knowledge of NBA Arenas in the USA, we wanted to reproduce a similar installation at CO’Met, with screens everywhere, to enrich the spectator experience and build loyalty. This is what we achieved with nearly 200 screens distributed in the boxes, common and sports areas. The system is widely used, including by food stand service providers.”

    Helping medical practitioners prepare for surgery

    It began with a severe case of ovarian cancer with the tumor wrapped in vital blood vessels. Planning this daunting surgery was made even more difficult by the need to combine the separate 2D scans into a mental map of the 3D anatomy. For help, the surgeon turned to state-of-the-art 3D medical imaging from Singular Health Group.

    “He couldn’t visualize the blood vessels on a standard 2D display,” explains the company’s Chief Technology Officer, Thomas Morrell. “So he used our software to previsualize the issues in a 3D environment. He managed to get a much better understanding, going into surgery with far greater confidence.”

    Says Morrell, “Once you’ve built the 3D model, you can get a really good view on a 2D screen. But without adding complicated shading, you don’t get the full sense of depth. That’s why we encouraged using VR goggles. I’ve been using VR for 12 years – from the very early days. While the goggles have made great strides, they can’t compare to the resolution and color depth of the Spatial Reality Display. This is by far the best experience I’ve had with stereo 3D. Every other 3D viewer has always been a compromise. The Sony display is a zero-compromise solution.”

    According to James Hill, Singular Health’s Chief Operating Officer, “There’s also a natural reluctance to putting on VR goggles. It’s a large jump for most surgeons or radiologists. Then the emergence of Covid-19 made people even more hesitant to put the goggles on. The Sony display allows the doctors to work in an environment they’re comfortable with. And our system provides a 3D model that can be viewed by your nurses, clinical team, tumor review board, medico-legal personnel and not least by the patients themselves.”



    A new era in medical imaging

    Based in Perth, Australia and listed on the ASX, Singular Health Group developed a proprietary Volumetric Rendering Platform to translate a stack of 2D scans into a single 3D computer model that can be rotated, zoomed, measured, annotated and manipulated in real time. Their system takes input from familiar CT, PET and MRI scanners, retains vital metadata from industry-standard DICOM® files and supports conventional PACS archiving and file sharing.

    Doctors can view 3D files using the company’s FDA-cleared 3Dicom MD® software, rehearse virtual surgical procedures with Singular Health’s 3Dicom VR, and securely exchange 3D assets over data networks using the company’s proprietary medical record sharing system. Singular Health also intends to introduce 3D printing and Computer Numerically Controlled milling of fully customized implants and surgical guides.

    While some other vendors can pre-render a static 3D file, Singular Health provides files that users can change and manipulate to get a deeper understanding of anatomical issues. In addition, Singular Health reduces up-front costs and alleviates the need for a dedicated on-site technician.

    “We’ve seen tremendous interest, at first from oncologists, gynecologists, dentists, liver surgeons, and cardiothoracic surgeons,” says James Hill. “And now other specialties are taking notice.”

    Powerful 3D presentation

    The Sony Spatial Reality Display enables viewers to see volumetric 3D without special glasses or VR goggles.¹ The display works from computer-generated images, in the case of Singular Health, using a Windows® PC running the Unity® rendering engine.² “We build our 3D models in a heavily modified version of Unity,” says Thomas Morrell. “So the integration with the Sony display was easy. It makes a lot of sense.”

    Sony’s screen features a high-precision micro-optical lens to separate the left-eye and right-eye images. In addition, the display tracks eye movement down to the millisecond, pivoting the image in sync as the viewer tilts or moves the head up and down, left and right – even forward and back. The result is an overpowering sensation of a solid 3D object.
