  • Super-sized Screens

    Super-sized Screens

The 2024 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) proved that television manufacturers will continue to create increasingly expansive screen size options. Compared to a few years ago, the difference now is that some of these super-sized screens have breached affordability for more consumers. There are practical reasons to consider a larger screen size for your home theater setup. And while only some have the space for a TV the size of a queen-sized mattress, those considering the addition of such a beast should be aware of the shortcomings of the largest displays available today.

    WHY GO BIG?
To perceive all of the fine details in your video material of choice, you need a screen size appropriate for your viewing distance. With 4K video viewed at 10 feet, a 100-inch screen would be an ideal starting point for someone with average vision to appreciate reference-level detail. Screens that large or even larger used to be the exclusive domain of projection setups, but nowadays, several manufacturers of LCD TVs offer options in the 98 to 100-inch range that will deliver a bright and well-contrasted picture in room environments that no consumer projector can match. Hisense recently introduced the 100-inch 100U8K 4K television with outstanding brightness and quantum dot color for a street price of $3500. Samsung Electronics offers a 98-inch Q80C QLED 4K television that’s received solid reviews for a discounted price of just under $5000.

Another reason to go with a larger TV screen size is immersion. THX home theater guidelines suggest a video display encompassing an approximate 40-degree viewing angle to the viewer, calculated by multiplying the viewing distance (in inches) by 0.835 to determine an ideal screen size. This calculation would make a 100-inch screen perfect for a 12-foot viewing distance. More practically speaking, THX’s guidance is a good reminder to consider sizing up your next TV to provide a more cinematic viewing experience. The 98-inch TCL 98QM850G features 2300 local dimming zones and up to 2000 nits of peak luminance for excellent picture contrast and brightness at a $6000 street price.

A positive side effect of the display manufacturers’ quest to craft super-sized TVs is increasing the affordability of what would have been considered a big screen option a few years ago. I ran the numbers on seven popular mid- and upper-tier television series available today, and the best price per unit area of screen size isn’t the absolute largest or smallest sizes. With a few exceptions, the 65- to 77-inch models offered the most screen real estate per dollar spent. Likewise, the largest screen sizes in this sample were also the most expensive per unit area of screen size – you’ll pay extra for big screen bragging rights.

    POTENTIAL PITFALLS
The weight involved is one of the hurdles of dealing with the most massive TVs available today. A 98 to 100-inch LCD television weighs nearly 150 lbs with the base stand attached. If you include the sturdy packaging needed to protect such a large object during transport, the unit weight can exceed 200 lbs. All TVs, especially the most massive ones, require placement on a sturdy surface with appropriate anchorage that prevents tip-overs. Wall-mounting such a heavy TV will require properly rated hardware installed correctly. Depending on the final location of a super-sized TV, it may need several physically capable people to make it a safe and damage-free install.

Another consideration is that a TV model’s largest screen size option may perform differently than the smaller offerings. One example of this performance fall-off with giant screens is the premium OLED offerings from LG and Samsung. The LG G3 OLED television features an impressive brightness-enhancing technology called a meta-lens array (MLA) that is only available in 55-, 65-, and 77-inch screen sizes. The 83-inch G3 OLED lacks MLA technology and cannot achieve the brightness of its smaller siblings. Similarly, Samsung’s quantum dot OLED (QD-OLED) televisions, like the S90C and S95C, also top out at 77 inches before resorting to other panel technologies that don’t offer the same brightness and color performance.

And, in the never-ending race for the least expensive “100-inch” TV available, it shouldn’t be surprising that manufacturers will sacrifice viewing angles, picture contrast, and brightness to achieve competitive pricing.

    COMING SOON
For 2024, TCL announced a 115-inch version of the well-rated QM8 series televisions (QM891G) that claim 5000 nits of light output and more than 20000 local dimming zones. Hisense also announced an updated UX model featuring a 110-inch screen size with a whopping 10000 nits of (claimed) peak light output and 40000 local dimming zones.

While there are currently almost no OLED options above 83 inches, LG announced plans to deliver several 97-inch models in 2024 as part of the C4, G4, and M4 series television lineups. While LG’s largest OLEDs will lack the aforementioned brightness-enhancing MLA technology, the company announced MLA would arrive in some of its premium 83-inch 2024 models.

8K pixel resolution is also a rarity among today’s big-screen TVs. The 98-inch Samsung Neo QLED 8K QN990C is a lone exception that quadruples the number of pixels of a 4K television for a more seamless viewing experience at closer viewing distances. However, the $40000 price tag of the QN990C may indicate the difficulty in crafting the largest screen sizes ideal for highlighting the benefits of 8K resolution.

As for practical manufacturing limits, LCD televisions are literally carved out of giant sheets of “mother glass.” The latest generation of mother glass would allow for creating a single 150-inch 16:9 TV and, maybe, some additional smaller screens to enhance manufacturing efficiency.

MicroLED display technology is an impressive-looking alternative for creating giant TVs by seamlessly tiling multiple smaller panels together. MicroLED displays are quickly maturing but remain a costly option. Currently, Samsung’s bespoke 146-inch 4K microLED TV option will set you back $220000.

Worldwide sales of Philips MediaSuite TVs – designed exclusively for guest room experiences – surpass 500,000 as global hotels continue to check-in

PPDS, a subsidiary of TPV Technology Limited, specializes in marketing and distributing Philips-branded professional displays, including professional TVs, signage, and direct view LED solutions.

PPDS reports sales of Philips MediaSuite TVs exceeded 500,000 during ISE 2024, with leading hotel groups adopting the industry’s advanced entertainment solution for guest room experiences.

These TVs offer advanced entertainment solutions tailored for guest room experiences, providing home-from-home functionality and transforming the perception of hotel TVs. Featuring Chromecast built-in™, access to streaming services, enhanced security, remote management capabilities, and continuous software updates, Philips MediaSuite meets the evolving needs of both guests and hoteliers, driving its widespread adoption and surpassing sales targets.

PPDS, the exclusive global provider of Philips Professional Displays, is delighted to confirm that sales of Philips MediaSuite TVs surpassed 500,000 during the week of ISE 2024, with the world’s leading hotel groups continuing to switch to the industry’s most advanced entertainment solution designed exclusively for guest room experiences.

This momentous milestone – which has exceeded PPDS’ own ambitious internal targets – arrives less than five years after Philips MediaSuite, hailed as the most advanced hotel TV solution of its kind, was first introduced to the hospitality industry, bringing in a new era of home-from-home functionality, and transforming the perception of hotel TVs.

Designed to put guests in control of their viewing experiences, Philips MediaSuite (available in models sized from 19”-75”) launched in EMEA in 2019 and in North America and APAC in 2021, quickly becoming the brand of choice for some of the world’s most prestigious and recognised hotel groups. Today, PPDS has regional and international supplier agreements with Accor, B&B Hotels, Best Western, Choice, Four Seasons, IHG, Louvre, Marriott, Radisson, and Wyndham, to name just a few.

    A new standard set

Speaking from the Philips booth at ISE when the 500,000th MediaSuite sale was made, Jeroen Verhaeghe, Global Business Development Director for Hospitality at PPDS, and the innovator behind Philips MediaSuite, commented: “Philips MediaSuite was inspired by personal experience. Hotel TVs had lost their appeal. They simply weren’t keeping pace with modern day viewing habits, forcing guests to watch their content through their mobile devices rather than on the big screen. That is certainly not the case in the half million plus rooms now hosting Philips MediaSuite, bringing home-from-home entertainment options streaming in for guests, reforming perceptions of hotel TVs, and creating new possibilities and efficiencies for hotels, too.”

Tuning into a new era of TVs

Offering a seamless transition between home and the hotel room, Philips MediaSuite remains the only hospitality TV to feature Chromecast built-in™, with access to the Google Play store and Netflix ready functionality. Guests can access and cast their content from their preferred accounts (including Apple TV+, DAZN, Disney+, Prime, YouTube™, and more) directly onto the TV using their own personal device – whatever their mobile operating system – as they would at home, with no additional wires, dongles, or reoccurring equipment fees for the hotel.

With Chromecast built-in™, security is also enhanced, with no additional external hardware and therefore zero risk of its theft – a feature exclusive to Philips MediaSuite and the recently launched Philips Hospitality TV 4500 Series – while all customer data is automatically deleted upon check-out, removing timely and costly manual wiping and giving guests total peace of mind.

With PPDS remaining committed to its Android technology, Philips MediaSuite also brings significant back end control and management capabilities, plus a raft of cost saving opportunities. PPDS’ unique ‘Extended Lifetime’ promise means Philips MediaSuite TVs improve with age, with regular software updates adding the latest features and app updates found on the newest models. This helps hoteliers to maximise their investment and maintain consistency in all rooms, while reducing unnecessary upgrades and electronic waste, supporting their sustainability goals.

TVs can be managed entirely remotely, ensuring optimum performance in every room, with personalised messaging, customer feedback (including surveys), and even room service, achievable on a per room or collective scale, including internationally.

‘Sounds’ too good to be true

The introduction in September 2023 of the Philips Professional Soundbar brings an elevated home-from-home cinema experience for guests enjoying music, movies and more on Philips MediaSuite TVs.

Continuing PPDS’ accelerated ‘total solutions’ strategy, the pairing delivers the industry’s ultimate audiovisual experience, transforming hotel guest rooms into highly immersive cinematic experiences and crystal clear performance, immersing guests even deeper into the action.

Jeroen continued: “By working with our specialist team of experts, together with the unrivalled manufacturing power of our mother company, TPV, and our incredible partners, we are committed to

delivering the many world-first features and functions on this state-of-the-art, all inclusive, and ever evolving solution. Android, Chromecast built-in, and all the streaming opportunities will continue to be a part of this incredible story.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the response from the market. And we’re not standing still, either. With news such as the addition of DAZN – only available for hospitality on Philips MediaSuite TVs – and more to come, we are continuing to bring world-first, complementary solutions that add even more value for our hospitality customers. And we thank them all for choosing Philips, positioning our hospitality TVs as the brand of choice for advanced guest entertainment and experiences.”

“Many of our new motorized TV mounts were developed based on requests from our dealers,” says Cory Lovett, Nexus 21 CEO. “No two homes are designed exactly alike and installation requirements vary widely, so when our dealers ask for new features and designs, we immediately go to work to create a mount or a technology that meets their needs. The products and technology we’re demonstrating at ISE 2024 are a reflection of this mission to support our dealer network with high-quality, versatile, and installation-friendly motorized TV mounts, along with technology to simplify control and integration.”

All-New Nexus 21 L77i Drop-Down TV Lift for Ceilings and High Walls

When wall space is at a premium, finding room for a wall-mounted TV can be next to impossible. A highlight of Nexus 21’s ISE 2024 exhibit, the new L77i Drop-Down TV Lift, solves this issue. Dealers can choose to mount a TV above the ceiling or in an enclosure high on a wall. At the touch of a button, the mount’s motorized mechanism lowers the TV from its hiding spot into view. “For the first time, integrators have multiple viable drop-down options, which is particularly useful in situations where the ceiling is too high, or there is limited access above it,” Lovett explains.

The Nexus 21 L77i lift extends as far as 52 inches and can carry a TV as large as 86 inches and 68kg (150 lbs). “There has been a dramatic increase in requests from dealers and end-users for overhead mounting solutions,” Lovett continues. “With TVs becoming lighter and slimmer, now is the perfect time to consider mounting a display overhead. Our highly versatile L77i, as well as our L77ix, which incorporates a motorized swivel, were designed specifically for these popular applications.” No matter the project requirements, the L77i is quick to deploy, arriving at the jobsite preassembled to help cut installation time in half.

All-New Nexus 21 DL-65 Series Pop-Up Swivel Mount for Extra Heavy TVs

Certainly, TVs are getting slimmer and lighter, but there are still plenty of applications that require a heavy-duty lift to carry beefier models. Outdoor entertainment areas where TVs need to pop-up from inside a cabinet often require a lift with enough power to move weighty enclosure tops and TV/soundbar combos. For this reason, Nexus 21 developed its DL-65 Series, a complete line of motorized pop-up lifts for use in covered outdoor settings.

ISE 2024 attendees will be the first to see the newest member of the DL-65 Series, the DL-65x. It combines the same powerful dual motors, quiet lift technology, and installation ease as earlier models, with the addition of a newly developed extra-weight swivel mechanism. This feature, which mechanically swivels a display to a preferred position, increases the weight capacity from 45kg (100 lbs) to 79kg (175 lbs) and can extend up to 97.7 cm (38.5”). The inclusion of sleek actuator technology ensures no visible tracks or gears in the extended position.

Other models in the new DL extra-weight, pop-up series include the DL-65en and DL-65ens, which are designed for the inclusion of custom cabinetry to cover the back and sides of the TV. The DL-65en elevates a TV but with no swiveling action; the DL-65ens elevates a TV and swivels it manually.

Nexus 21 CL-65e Ceiling Flip-Down and Extend TV Lift

Ideally suited for environments with high ceilings and end-users who want a flexible viewing experience, Nexus 21 offers its CL-65e Ceiling Flip-Down and Extend TV Lift. Combining two distinct motions, the lift flips down a display mounted horizontally, either flush with the ceiling or above it, then lowers it 24 inches. The mount, which accommodates TVs up to 65 inches and 45kg (100 pounds), can be mounted in the ceiling framing or bolted directly to the surface, giving integrators two installation options.

Nexus 21 L-65x Pop-Up Lift with Motorized Swivel

A popular conceal-and-reveal solution for living room furniture and foot-of-the-bed cabinets is the Nexus 21 L-65x. This near-silent, easy-to-install pop-up lift offers two programmable preset positions to raise and swivel the attached TV with one touch of a button on the included handheld remote. It holds TVs up to 65 inches and 45kg (100 lbs), extends nearly 98 cm (39”), and swivels 360 degrees, enabling the screen to be viewed from a completely different vantage point.

All-New Nexus 21 Integration and Sensor Technologies

The physical lifting and lowering of TVs of all sizes and brands covers only the mechanical aspects of Nexus 21’s solutions. Technology also plays a vital role in proper positioning, control, and integration, and Nexus 21 introduces to ISE 2024 attendees several new technological features to enhance installation ease and end-user enjoyment. Nexus 21 will preview its new integration module, which requires no commitment to a single control method—IR, IP, or contact closure—when specifying and installing a lift. The integration module, which comes with a Bluetooth remote, supports all three, dramatically simplifying installation and configuration for systems integrators. It is expected to be released Q2 2024.

Safety is a primary concern when installing any motorized mechanism into a residential or commercial setting. The inclusion of highly sensitive accelerometer and gyroscope technologies in Nexus 21’s built-in lift sensors provides ultra-responsive collision detection and stopping capability.

  • DAZN selects PPDS – teaming up to bring the world’s largest sports streaming platform to hotel rooms exclusively on Philips MediaSuite TVs

DAZN selects PPDS – teaming up to bring the world’s largest sports streaming platform to hotel rooms exclusively on Philips MediaSuite TVs

PPDS, a subsidiary of TP Vision Europe and MMD-Monitors & Displays Nederland, markets and sells Philips-branded professional displays, including professional TVs, signage, and direct view LED solutions, under a trademark license by Koninklijke Philips N.V. DAZN is a sports entertainment platform specializing in European football, women’s football, and boxing, offering a single, comprehensive platform for fans to watch, read, bet, play, share, and buy merchandise.

PPDS partners with DAZN to offer live content streaming services in hotel guest rooms exclusively via Philips MediaSuite hospitality TVs, bringing sports entertainment to hotel guest rooms.

This partnership aims to revolutionize the in-room TV experience, allowing guests to control their viewing experiences and cater to the growing demand for high-quality sports content in hotel settings.

PPDS, the exclusive global provider of Philips Professional Displays and complementary solutions, is delighted to announce a new partnership with DAZN – the world’s leading sports entertainment platform and Europe’s largest football broadcaster – to bring its live and on-demand content streaming services into hotel guest rooms for the first time, exclusively via Philips MediaSuite hospitality TVs.

Set to be unveiled and demonstrated for the first time at ISE 2024 in Barcelona (Philips Booth 3P500), this latest global partnership strengthens PPDS’ clear and unrivalled mission to deliver the industry’s most extensive and flexible choice of in-room TV entertainment services for hotels, letting guests take full control of their viewing experiences.

Launched in 2016, and headquartered in London, UK, DAZN provides an extensive choice of live sports and entertainment, with top division men’s and women’s football/soccer, professional boxing, MMA, motorsport, wrestling, and tennis hosted on the platform annually.

Available in more than 200 countries – including a strong domestic presence with premium football/soccer rights in Italy, Spain, Germany, Japan, France, Portugal, Belgium, Taiwan, the United States, and Canada – DAZN has amassed more than 60 million subscribers and 300 million monthly users worldwide. Over 1.2 billion hours of content is streamed annually via the DAZN app, which – until now – has mainly been accessible via a range of connected consumer devices, including smartphones, tablets, and game consoles.

    The complete package

As part of this exciting and groundbreaking partnership between DAZN and PPDS – a market leader for advanced Android SoC hospitality TVs around the globe – the DAZN app will be available for the first time via hotel guest room TVs, embedded directly onto Philips MediaSuite TVs.

Developed in partnership, and tailored exclusively for use on the Philips MediaSuite Series – the hotel TV of choice for some of the most recognised global hotel brands, including Accor, IHG, Marriot, and Radisson – the DAZN app will be available for hotels to offer to guests looking to enjoy (for example) the next big Anthony Joshua or Katie Taylor boxing match on the big screen during their stay.

For hotels wishing to subscribe to DAZN for their guests, there are two initial packages that can be selected depending on their target audience. DAZN Base, which is included in each of the packages as standard, will offer all sports for which DAZN has worldwide rights. This Base package can be added to with DAZN Ultimate – for core territories that have additional rights requirements, for example the Bundesliga in Germany.

    Packing a punch

For more powerful, deeper immersive audio and visual experiences, hoteliers can also include the new Philips Professional Soundbar HAL5023 with a built-in subwoofer, designed and configured exclusively for Philips MediaSuite TVs, which will also be on show at ISE 2024.

Jeroen Verhaeghe, Global Business Development Director Hospitality, commented: “Philips MediaSuite was created to transform what had become an outdated and tired in-room TV experience. Running on Android, we wanted to provide hoteliers with a TV solution that could evolve with the needs of the customer and keeping pace with the trends in the market. This means providing them with what they need to let them take control of how, when, and by whatever means they prefer to consume their content.”

He continued: “We pride ourselves on responding quickly to changes in the market, including implementing new popular apps and services guests crave. We have shown that with our partnerships with the likes of Netflix and Apple TV+ in recent years and, with the popularity and demand for DAZN, we are thrilled to have been selected by their team to become the first global hotel TV manufacturer to offer their fantastic streaming service via Philips MediaSuite TVs.”

Rachelle Peterson, SVP Global Commercial Distribution at DAZN, added: “Here at DAZN, our focus is to ensure our customers have access to the best and widest range of quality content, while at the same time, having the best possible experience through our platform.

“Demand for our services continues to grow exponentially and we are always exploring opportunities to extend our reach further, and to bring even greater value to both new and existing customers, wherever they happen to be – including inside hotel rooms. We’re delighted to have partnered with PPDS, a company that shares our obsession for quality and experience, to debut our DAZN app inside guest rooms for the first time with Philips MediaSuite.”

Jeroen concluded: “If you are on holiday or away on business, the DAZN app on Philips MediaSuites means you can now enjoy all your favourite sporting events on your in-room TV in up to 4K resolution, together with great sound. At PPDS, our philosophy is always to lead from the front. This is demonstrated once again with our partnership with DAZN. The days of having to squint at a small smartphone or tablet display to enjoy quality sports in your hotel room are over. We look forward to demonstrating this great new platform at ISE 2024.”
