    Renkus-Heinz Helps Spread the Word at Most Holy Trinity Church

    Located along the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Pass Christian, Mississippi, has served the spiritual needs of the community for over 150 years. Within that span, the church has been re-built twice due to damage from natural disasters. In 2007, the diocese approved construction of a new church ​​combining three smaller churches of the parish into the single church of Most Holy Trinity. The new facility served the parish until 2017 when the diocese authorized construction of a new church building. After 5 years of planning and effort, the new church opened its doors in 2021. The sanctuary features high ceilings with hard tile flooring and solid wood pews, making for a highly reverberant environment. An audio system from Renkus-Heinz was the ideal solution to help the congregation stay engaged during worship services.

    The church contacted Rain Jaudon, owner of Magnolia AV Solutions, to design an audio system for optimal coverage in both the sanctuary and the upstairs choir loft. Jaudon, in turn, contacted independent manufacturer’s representative Richard Hembree of Griffith Sales Associates to assist with the installation.

    “Steerable arrays work best in reverberant spaces,” said Jaudon. “The combination of adjustable pattern control with exceptional speech intelligibility make them a perfect choice for many houses of worship.”

    Acoustic panels were attached to the ceiling to reduce the sanctuary’s reverberation time while a pair of ICONYX IC24-RN steerable arrays were deployed at the front of house to provide targeted acoustics for the congregation, and two ultra-compact DC12/2 steerable arrays were installed as fill loudspeakers in the church transept. Multiple compact 4” CX41 loudspeakers were mounted on microphone stands and utilized as personal monitors for the choir, with a CA82-RD1 point source flown from the ceiling to support the general audio needs in the choir loft.

    Both the church leadership and the parishioners were thrilled with the audio system, stating “the choir sounded like angels.”

    Renkus-Heinz Delivers Unstoppable Audio Announcement Clarity for Europe’s Busiest International Train Station

    Located at the intersection of France, Germany, and Switzerland, the Basel Train Station (Basel SBB) in Basel, Switzerland is a primary hub for travel throughout Europe and is often regarded as Europe’s busiest international train station. With high background and travel noise compounded with highly reflective ceilings and walls, announcements were hard to understand, resulting in traveler confusion, missed trains, and unnecessary congestion throughout the station. To combat the acoustic challenges Basel SBB faced, Renkus-Heinz Iconyx Compact loudspeakers were installed to aid in delivering intelligible announcements for passengers and staff.

    Travelers are inundated with a wide range of sights and sounds as they pass through any busy transportation hub: arrival, boarding and departure announcements, safety and security information, marketing and services messaging, and the droning murmur of fellow travelers moving from point A to point B—it’s a flood of input for the senses at every step. Transportation managers are challenged with the need to cut through clutter, capture attention and deliver actionable and perhaps critical safety information to a widespread, quickly moving public. For Basel SBB, the initial sound system and loudspeakers installed were not up to the acoustic challenges of the space.

    Chris Steiger, CEO of Zurich-based pro audio distribution firm promedias AG, was brought in by Basel SBB managers to upgrade the sound quality of one of the station’s larger halls. The hall houses two large waiting areas, a cafe, a few small convenience and service stands, Steiger explained.

    “Station managers needed to drastically improve the coverage and quality of sound for announcements within the train station,” said Steiger. “The hall is so busy, noisy and acoustically alive that it was difficult for passengers to hear and understand

    announcements. Further, managers were worried that the audio would be inadequate when critical safety or evacuation announcements needed to be made.”

    After modeling the hall’s acoustics with software, it became apparent that the new sound system would need to generate a high-enough SPL level to be heard over the background noise. The audio would also need to be tightly controlled with beam steering technology to move the sound away from the reflective surfaces and direct it toward the travelers.

    Ultimately the promedias AG team specified a set of four Iconyx Compact Series beam steering arrays from Renkus-Heinz; two ICC36/3-RN and two ICC48/3-RN arrays with custom color finishing to blend into the decor of the hall. By significantly reducing the reflections by keeping the audio focused on the travelers, the installed Iconyx Compact Series delivers the audio coverage, clarity and intelligibility station managers could rely on.

    The compact footprint and custom paint match of the Iconyx Compact were also important as many areas of the station are designated national heritage sites. With the Iconyx Compact’s small footprint, the new sound solution doesn’t disrupt the aesthetics of the space while still providing high intelligibility.

    “Basel SBB was a challenging project requiring excellent sound quality and installation flexibility to be successful; the Iconyx Compact Series arrays offer the power, specifications, and the small footprint needed to fit the unique installation requirements,” said Michal Poplawski, European Technical Sales Manager, Renkus-Heinz.

    Steiger explained that the Renkus-Heinz system was seamlessly integrated with the station’s existing, automated safety and evacuation system, and the compact arrays have delivered the sound quality and intelligibility SBB management needed.

    “Renkus-Heinz provides excellent, state-of-the-art systems; they are a great partner and easy to work with. The team was very helpful in creating the custom color finish for us and in helping with specifying an appropriately sized system for the hall,” added

    Steiger. “The sound performance of the arrays has been flawless, and we’re now working with management to bring Renkus-Heinz sound solutions into other halls and waiting areas within the station.”

    Renkus-Heinz helps the Salvation Army Reimagine a Hollywood Golden Age Classic

    When the Hawaii theater opened its curtains in the heart of Hollywood in 1940, it offered an experience like no other. The theater had seating for over 1,100, a large lobby and lounge, retail shops, a children’s nursery, and much more. The Hawaii theater was famous for its “erupting” volcanos of light on each side of the screen signaling the start of a movie. For more than 20 years, the theater personified the Golden Age of Hollywood, but while many might say the theater’s best years are behind it, the Salvation Army Hollywood— with the help of fellow Southern California company Renkus-Heinz — is bringing a new vision for the theater to life.

    The Hollywood Corps of the Salvation Army Hollywood purchased the Hawaii theater in 1963 and converted it into a multi-use community center. Faced today with an alarming growth of homelessness in Hollywood, the organization was looking for new ways to generate more resources and provide hope within the neighborhood. Local performer, music composer, and Emmy-nominated TV show creator Sammy Oriti visited the Salvation Army’s Hollywood center and had an inspiration.

    “The bones of the building have excellent potential for concerts, musicals, and other live performances,” said Oriti. “Working with the team at Salvation Army Hollywood we finalized a vision for the space and knew that Renkus-Heinz would bring the sound solution it needed. I called Renkus-Heinz, told them of the plan, and there was no hesitation to come aboard.”

    Garrison Parkin, the Western Regional Sales Manager for Renkus-Heinz, worked with Oriti and the team to specify a sound system with the quality, flexibility, and control needed to produce almost any presentation or performance in the newly renovated theater. The stage would need to accommodate everything from spoken word ministering to full musical productions with multiple singers, full bands, and a wide range of instrumentation.

    “It’s a great-looking stage and theater so the producers didn’t want to hang big, bulky arrays that would spoil the ambiance and intimacy of the space,” explained Parkin. “But at the same time, the space is wide with a curved ceiling, and they needed good coverage and fidelity for every seat, and for that, the ICLX is the perfect fit.”

    After acoustically evaluating the space and considering the supporting equipment in use, Renkus-Heinz recommended a set of eight ICLive X loudspeaker modules for creating two beam-steering tower arrays, supported by a matching set of eight ICLX-118S subwoofers. Renkus-Heinz also deployed a set of eight P2-10 floor monitors for on-stage use.

    The ICLive X series is a complete system, designed from the ground up, consisting of three freely combinable, steerable-array modules, the ICLX, ICLXL, ICLLX, and a matching subwoofer, the ICLX-118S. ICLive X is highly versatile, providing system designers the horsepower, steerability, and directivity needed to deliver consistent coverage and clarity for even the biggest shows in the most challenging spaces.

    “The first thing I noticed with this system is that we have plenty of power. Sometimes small column arrays don’t cut it, but these have plenty of headroom — more than we will need for the 350 seats — which is fantastic,” explained Sean Massey, AV integrator for Able Productions in Los Angeles, who worked with Oriti to deliver exceptional AV to the theater renovation. “After white and pink noising the room, we worked with Garrison to set the beams and dial in all the specifics; it sounds amazing. It’s a warm, full-range sound with a lot of dynamics and fidelity, and the coverage is perfect. Every seat in the house is set to have an excellent experience!”

    The Salvation Army Hollywood will begin selling tickets for a range of concerts and shows with the proceeds directly helping the Hollywood neighborhood. Currently, the Salvation Army Hollywood serves 200 hot meals a night to those on the street, and nearly 1,000 families visit the Hollywood facility three days a week to pick up boxed foods.

    “I’ve been a big Renkus-Heinz fan since the 1980s; their systems are always super reliable and sound amazing,” said Oriti. “I’m proud of this project, and I’m so happy to be working with Renkus-Heinz — the company’s people and products are great to work with, and together we’re building something very special here. I hope we can replicate this in more cities and help touch even more lives.”

    Renkus-Heinz appoints industry expert Sebastian Rivas as Software Development and Research Engineer. Rivas will work closely with Chief Technology Officer Ralph Heinz and Engineering Manager Chad DeFranco. Rivas joins the Renkus-Heinz team at a pivotal time as the company has just completed organizational changes with Founder, Harro Heinz, retiring and appointing Monika Smetona as President of the company.

    “I had the opportunity to speak with Harro Heinz about the role and found great value in learning about the history of the company and the innovative processes that have put them as the leader in beam steering loudspeaker technology,” said Rivas. “Renkus-Heinz is a leader in the audio solutions industry and I am fortunate to enter the company at a time to contribute to the sound revolution.”

    With close to 15 years in the audio/visual industry, Rivas is uniquely positioned to join the Renkus-Heinz team and advance the company’s audio engineering efforts. Prior to joining Renkus-Heinz, Rivas worked as a professor at St. Thomas University, 2D Software Developer at Sensey Electronics in Mexico, and at Danley Sound Labs developing the Direct Sound System modeling software.

    Event Center in Albert Einstein’s Native Town Selects Renkus-Heinz ICLive as the Smart Sound Solution

    From corporate meetings to formal galas, the Congress Centrum Ulm in Southern Germany is a destination venue for a wide range of top-tier science, economic and cultural events. The center’s 11,500-square foot, 1,500-seat “Einstein Saal,” or Einstein Hall, and the foyer of the Congress Centrum Ulm (CCU) recently underwent a sound system re-design with Renkus-Heinz ICLive loudspeakers playing an integral role for a smart, future-proof audio upgrade.

    Named after Albert Einstein, who was born in Ulm in 1879, the CCU’s Einstein Hall features a movable stage and proscenium for use as an orchestra pit or stage extension. The venue’s vast wood-paneled walls, towering ceiling, and tiered balconies create a stunning view toward the main stage. While architecturally appealing, these characteristics lead to acoustic challenges.

    With the new audio system, the city of Ulm, property developer of the CCU, wanted to deliver a high-quality sound experience to every seat in the house and employed the audio consultant office HF-Medientechnk to design the new audio system with a special emphasis on the spoken word. Live music— including full orchestral performances— also feature in the venue. HF-Medientechnik modeled the acoustics of the hall with EASE software and auditioned several loudspeakers to find the best solution for the space. The ICLive system from Renkus-Heinz resulted in the best solution for the space. At the same time, the system was compact enough to allow the use of additional mobile equipment of external event promoters at the sides of the stage without any restrictions.

    The ICLive digitally steerable array system from Renkus-Heinz is a highly versatile loudspeaker system intended to be used in higher-output applications. The system provides designers with the headroom, steer-ability, and directivity needed to deliver consistent coverage and clarity for large, acoustically difficult spaces.

    ICLive loudspeakers use Renkus-Heinz BeamWare to form tailored beams of sound that, when directed toward the audiences, are steered away from other surfaces that may cause unwelcomed echoes and reverberation. ICLive brings together high-performance acoustical components and powerful software in practical, modular systems that virtually disappear in most applications. The result of the system is a convincingly homogeneous sound field.

    fein.media, the integrator for the project installed the technology and Renkus-Heinz´s German distributor MediasPro configured and commissioned the speakers. Two ICLive loudspeaker arrays and two ICLX-118S subwoofers located on each side of the stage now provide uniform sound coverage across the hall. The main loudspeakers are supported by a mix of more than 30 Renkus-Heinz self-powered CA61 and CA81 loudspeakers in the space in front of the stage, as stage monitors, below the balcony, in the foyer, and as monitors in the control room.

    “For locations such as Congress Centrum Ulm, the loudspeaker solution should provide not only great audio but also allow flexibility of events and at the same time help maintaining the architectural integrity of the space,” noted MediasPro’s Michael Voessing, Renkus-Heinz distributor in Germany. “With architecturally unobtrusive sound solutions from Renkus-Heinz, we were able to create an acoustically beautiful space.”

    The Renkus-Heinz C Series loudspeakers provide outstanding performance at a competitive price point. The self-powered CA models come equipped with the advanced SA series power amplifiers, featuring optional RHAON Network Control or Dante inputs. With these features, all CA models are compatible with all other self-powered Renkus-Heinz loudspeakers, including the Renkus-Heinz steerable columns.

    In choosing Renkus-Heinz for the Einstein Hall update, the team of the city of Ulm, the operator Maritim Hotel Ulm, HF-Medientechnik, fein.media, and MediasPro worked to ensure that guests receive an exceptional and immersive audio experience. For the CCU, an audio system that can accommodate a wide range of events— from spoken word to music— was mission-critical and Renkus-Heinz speakers helped accomplish just that.

    A Kansas City Children’s Hospital Gets Smooth, Dynamic Audio from Compact Renkus-Heinz ICC 48/3 Loudspeakers

    Located in Kansas City, a local children’s hospital is home to a comprehensive pediatric medical center integrating clinical care and medical education for patients ages birth to 21. As part of the extensive teaching and research programs, the hospital built a new facility to foster innovative medical education.

    Within the campus is a 350-seat, state-of-the-art, multi-use auditorium for a range of presentations, lectures, large video conferencing meetings, and more. To complement the space’s impressive design, the hospital worked with St. Louis-based technology systems integrator, Coltrane Systems, to design and install the primary audio support system. When it came to ensuring crisp, clear audio for the auditorium, Coltrane trusted Renkus-Heinz to bring the sound solution.

    Renkus-Heinz’s digitally steerable loudspeaker solutions allow integrators to put sound where it’s wanted: on the audience. Further, the solutions come in multiple sizes, configurations, and color options — ensuring they will fit and blend into any challenging space.

    Mike Dolan, Director of AV for Coltrane Systems said the benefits of Renkus-Heinz were critical for the hospital’s new space as there were very specific parameters set out by the architect that the AV system needed to follow.

    “It’s an amazing space, and our primary challenge was keeping the ceiling and the entire space very clean,” Dolan said. “We were free to design and propose whatever we thought best, but the ceiling was off-limits, and all the audio had to be as discreet as possible, and hopefully, virtually invisible. Knowing we needed a high-caliber audio system with a small footprint, my first call was to our partners at Renkus-Heinz to help us understand the available options.”

    The auditorium features a 23.81-foot x 13.41-foot screen built flush into the front wall with almost no space on either side. With traditional speaker hangs not an option, Dolan selected Renkus-Heinz Iconyx Compact Series 48/3 speakers that could be wall-mounted inside the small but tall space available on each side of the screen.

    The ICC 48/3 offers additional solutions for integrators seeking flexible and powerful options in “medium-sized” installations. With an amplifier and DSP channel for each driver, the flexibility of Iconyx is now available in a package with a nearly 40 percent smaller footprint than the classic Iconyx.

    “The ICC 48/3 system fits the needs of the space perfectly,” Dolan said. “We now have thin columns on each edge of the screen that is 13-feet tall but only about 5.5-inches wide. They essentially disappear. The architects about fell out of their chairs because they didn’t think we could come back with something that sounded so good and fit the space so perfectly — it met exactly what they were trying to accomplish.”

    The Iconyx Compact Series design is available in four variants, ranging from 3.3ft (1m) to 13ft (4m). The longer columns provide excellent low-frequency control, an important consideration for applications where reverberation times peak at low frequencies. The longer columns also project coherent, highly intelligible sound for longer distances, negating the need for labor-intensive distributed systems in many applications.

    “The architect and the customer — and us frankly — are all thrilled with the results,” Dolan said. “You don’t know the speakers are there unless you know what you’re looking for. The audio is smooth and dynamic and carries to the back of the room in exactly the fashion we expected it to. We couldn’t be happier. It sounds amazing. Renkus-Heinz delivers true, genuine sound, and the compact ICC system is an absolutely perfect solution for this application.”
