    The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills stands as a beacon of luxury and refinement, nestled in the heart of one of Los Angeles’ most iconic neighborhoods. Famed for its blend of classic British elegance and modern Californian style, the hotel offers a range of upscale amenities, from its acclaimed Boxwood restaurant to its exclusive rooftop pool. However, the crown jewel of this property is its West End Rooftop, a sprawling 107 ft by 40 ft open-air space that serves as a prime venue for high-profile events, weddings, and corporate functions.

    Framed by a glass wall showcasing sweeping ocean views from Long Beach to the Malibu peninsula, the rooftop terrace is illuminated by spectacular sunsets and is a favorite among guests seeking a one-of-a-kind experience. However, alongside the picturesque appeal and vibrant atmosphere, event sound frequently spilled beyond the property, creating friction with nearby residents and leading to repeated noise complaints. To address these issues without compromising the venue’s reputation, the hotel turned to Russ DuBrow at Electronic Technology for a transformative audio solution.

    The partnership — centered on the installation of Renkus-Heinz’s innovative IC Live X Series (ICLX) loudspeakers — resulted in an acoustic upgrade that not only preserved the venue’s prestige but also fostered harmony with the surrounding community. “Guests come to The London expecting a premium experience, and that includes sound quality,” explains DuBrow. “At the same time, we needed to respect the community by eliminating noise spillover. Balancing these needs was our top priority.”

    The primary goal for the new system was to deliver a premium audio experience concentrated entirely within the rooftop’s boundaries. “I knew I could meet the hotel’s goals with fewer speakers than the previous installation done 10+ years ago. Recent technology gave me the tools to create the experience the client desired and bring the loudspeaker count down from eight to four. This provided superior sound quality and aesthetically complemented the venue while being cost-effective.”

    Renkus-Heinz’s IC Live X Series loudspeakers, known for their precision and adaptability, were selected to address the hotel’s unique requirements. These loudspeakers feature steerable technology that allows sound to be precisely directed, ensuring maximum coverage within the designated event space while preventing sound spillage.

    Four ICLX units were mounted along the wall at intervals of 25 ft, each placed 12 ft above the ground. The system was designed to provide one seamless zone of audio, ensuring even sound distribution throughout the rooftop. Complementing the ICLX loudspeakers are two SA112 subwoofers, which provide deep and impactful bass. The entire system was configured using Renkus-Heinz’s RHAON II platform, a powerful digital tool that enables precise adjustments to EQ settings, delay, and SPL placement. By digitally steering the sound using Renkus-Heinz’s OmniBeam software and tailoring it to the venue’s acoustic characteristics, the installation team created a system capable of delivering clarity, power, and control.

    “The IC Live X speakers allowed us to direct sound exactly where we needed: below the glass walls while concentrating the sound in the approximate middle while completely avoiding areas where it wasn’t wanted,” said DuBrow. “This level of control was critical for solving the noise complaints that had been an ongoing issue.”

    The upgraded audio system has transformed the rooftop experience at The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills. Complaints from neighbors have virtually disappeared, and the hotel has not faced further issues with city noise ordinances. Guests and event organizers have praised the improved sound quality, noting its clarity and balance even during high-energy events. DJs and performers benefit from the system’s adaptability, as it provides exceptional audio for both live music and spoken word presentations.

    “The difference is night and day,” DuBrow concludes. “Not only does the system deliver incredible sound for guests, but it also keeps the hotel out of trouble with neighbors and city authorities. It’s a win for everyone involved. The IC Live X Series gave us the tools to create something special, and the London Hotel rooftop is now a space that impresses guests and respects the community. That’s exactly what we set out to achieve.”

    Princeton University Chapel resurrects its audio with advanced loudspeaker technology from Renkus-Heinz

    The former university of Michelle Obama, New Jersey’s Ivy League Princeton University is one of the top schools in the United States. At the center of its religious and ceremonial endeavors sits Princeton University Chapel, an elegant house of worship that gives nod to the architectural style of the English Gothic Cathedrals of the 14th century.

    Constructed in 1928 after a fire destroyed the previous worship site, the cruciform chapel cost over $2 million to construct and was the largest university chapel in the US. For years, the venue has been relied on to carry congregations, host events and offer an oasis in the center of the university campus for people of all faiths. Complete with seating for almost 2000 worshippers, the nave features sandstone walls with limestone highlights and towering 80 ft-high ceilings, but its admirable aesthetics compromised the speech intelligibility of liturgical services.

    To resolve the sound issues, the chapel’s staff reached out to Maryland-based audio-visual integrators Washington Professional Systems (WPS) for a new audio system. The brief specified clear and intelligible speech for all congregants, as well as acoustically balanced music enhancement, broadcast capabilities and better audio clarity for worship leaders, the choir and the musicians. With consultancy support from SIA Acoustics, the chapel upgraded to an audio system from Renkus-Heinz, complete with innovative beam-steering capabilities.

    Going into the project, WPS had to consider the historic nature of the venue, and working closely with the project architect, the integrators ensured that the system was discreet and respected the intricacies of the building. WPS deployed a tiered escalation process to identify any modifications and sought guidance on how to proceed, ensuring that the effects of the project on the chapel’s irreplaceable stone and woodwork was minimal.

    “The loudspeaker system was designed with the goal of delivering high-quality speech intelligibility and tonal balance for music, whilst also respecting the venue,” begins John V Fish, senior project engineer at WPS. “With that framework in mind, the system utilizes 13 different self-powered Renkus-Heinz IC Live Gen5 loudspeakers throughout the main sanctuary, located on each side of the altar, on the columns of the nave, on the sidewalls of the balcony, and at the Marquand Chapel. Each loudspeaker receives an independent audio signal from the DSP and is programmed with specific delays to act as one unit, creating the effect that the audio is being delivered from the altar.”

    One of the main reasons WPS opted for a Renkus-Heinz audio solution was the beam-steering capabilities of the brand’s loudspeakers. A leader in the field of beam-steering technology, the IC Live Gen5 Series features OmniBeam – an algorithm that offers unmatched sound and coverage for all venues, without complex configuration. The use of OmniBeam results in custom-tailored sound that covers the exact geometry of the space, delivering consistency from the front to the back of any venue.

    “The beam-steering capabilities allow control of sound dispersion from the loudspeakers in the vertical plane. This capability helps fine tune the system for highly intelligible speech in the very reverberant and reflective Chapel,” furthers Sam Berkow of SIA Acoustics. “Additionally, the IC Live Gen5 loudspeakers allow us as designers to control the vertical dispersion of sound to the point where we can create the sense that sound is coming from the presenter or worship leader themselves, rather than from the loudspeakers. This system allows a historic building to meet the expectations of today’s most demanding audiences.”

    The system is mixed through an Allen and Heath Avantis digital console, and a Dante-based network is used to transport audio signals throughout the sanctuary, the choir and the altar. This network enables the system to move the audio signature effectively with low latency at a low cost – all system inputs and outputs are available on Dante, which means each signal can be routed as needed including to specific loudspeaker groups. “By offering multiple modes of operation, the design allows Chapel staff to activate and use the system without navigating a complicated startup procedure,” concludes Fish. “Additionally, the system has enough headroom to be used for a wide variety of events with no drop-off in quality or sonic clarity.”

    Being a working religious center, Princeton University Chapel stayed open during the installation to allow for daily services and events. To maintain these operations, WPS created staggered shifts for their on-site team that worked in tandem with the chapel’s schedule and prevented any disruptions. The result is a high-quality audio system that has achieved its goal of blending modern and advanced capabilities with flexible, easy-to-use operation.

    Renkus-Heinz UBX Loudspeakers Reach New Heights Along the Minnesota Zoo’s Treetop Trail

    The Treetop Trail is reimagining what it means to visit the Minnesota Zoo. As the longest elevated pedestrian loop in the world, the 1.25-mile Treetop Trail brings guests up to 32 feet into the canopy, offering a breathtaking birds-eye view of the zoo and animals below. In addition to creating a sense of awe and wonder, it connects guests with nature and inspires action to save wildlife in Minnesota and around the world. The zoo has already named the new ambassador to the trail’s habitat: a North American porcupine named “Quillber.”

    There are several “lookouts” along the trail, which serve as areas of interest in which zoo docents inform visitors about the area they’re in or animals they can see. These lookouts will also be used for small-scale musical performances through the zoo’s planned Music in the Trees program. Featuring a rotation of different musicians and styles, visitors will be able to listen to soothing melodies under the canopy on select Sunday afternoons. Powering the docent-led talks and musical performances along the trail are UBX Series loudspeakers from Renkus-Heinz.

    The Treetop Trail is based on the zoo’s monorail track, which ceased operation in 2013 because the trains were outdated and would cost too much to renovate. Instead, zoo leadership saw an innovative opportunity to repurpose the track that would have otherwise been removed and scrapped. Plans to repurpose the old monorail began in 2018 with the ceremonial groundbreaking occurring in 2022.

    Prior to breaking ground, zoo staff contacted the Texas-based True North Consulting Company (TNCG) to design the AV system for the walking path. Jiggs Lee, a senior consultant with TNCG, was responsible for recommending Renkus-Heinz’s solution to Jon Martin, True North’s Director of Design Services.

    “The company turned to me because I have a lot of experience with loudspeakers and am familiar with the location and its environmental extremes,” said Lee. “Number one, we needed a loudspeaker that can function in Minnesota’s outdoor environment, which can get down to -25°F in the winter and triple digits in the summer because the trail will be open year-round. Secondly, we needed a loudspeaker with a wide horizontal dispersion that focused the sound on where people’s ears are instead of splashing it all over the place. My previous experience working with Renkus-Heinz’s loudspeakers made me think UBX would be the perfect fit.”

    Under the watchful eye of Micah Ramsey – True North’s project manager – 18 UBX4 loudspeakers were installed at the lookouts along the trail, which range in size from 12 x 20 feet across where they bump out to 12 x 90 feet across. Many of the larger lookouts have built-in seating for visitors to sit and watch a presentation. The UBX4 features a compact, slender cabinet, making it easy to blend into an immersive environment like the Treetop Trail. However, it still delivers precise vertical pattern control and an unmatched combination of features for a loudspeaker of its size.

    The award-winning UBX Series brings the precise coverage, high intelligibility and renowned sound quality of Renkus-Heinz’s flagship ICONYX loudspeakers into the realm of passive column arrays. New for the UBX Series is Passive UniBeam™ Technology which addresses each transducer with specially designed all-pass filter networks, gain shading and additional frequency filtering to generate an asymmetrical vertical dispersion with constant directivity, delivering consistent front-to-back coverage with minimal side lobe artifacts. All models in the UBX Series are weather-resistant (IP64) out of the box with the included gland nut-protected input cover.     “I think the Treetop Trail is going to be an extraordinary addition to the Minnesota Zoo,” said Lee. “And even though the audio doesn’t play an equal role when compared to the visual grandeur of the animals and environment, I’m still really excited that Renkus-Heinz gets to play a role in that experience.”

    Opened to the public in July 2023, zoo officials are also excited about the Treetop Trail, saying it will provide a new perspective on nature and the animals, which include tigers, moose and bison. “The Treetop Trail is such an important step in charting a new future for the zoo,” said Suzanne Gappa, co-chair of the Step Into Nature Campaign. “And our trail provides zoo guests access to nature like never before. We have a lot to look forward to!”

    In the suburbs of Detroit lies Shelby Township, home to St. John Vianney Catholic Church. The quiet and unassuming church hosts a vast nave, with seating for more than 1200 people. The rectangular nave features brick-lined walls and soaring slanted ceilings that culminate in a glass-encased cupola, allowing natural light to bathe the altar below. Although open and airy, the vaulted ceilings and brick masonry compromised the speech intelligibility of liturgical services. Beam-steering arrays from Renkus-Heinz were the perfect solution to help solve the church’s audio challenges.

    Church staff contacted Robert Wisnieski, owner and system designer at RMW Productions, to design a new audio system for the sanctuary. Wisnieski recommended Renkus-Heinz’s ICLive X Series of steerable arrays to meet the church’s goals of even coverage and high intelligibility. The ICLive X Series provides complete customization of room coverage through individually steerable beams, and the loudspeakers’ high directivity made them the best choice for a venue like St. John Vianney.

    “The reverberation in St. John Vianney’s nave was pretty significant,” said Wisnieski. “It’s a wide room with high ceilings, so the acoustics were not ideal. After looking at several different loudspeaker series, we felt the ICLive X was the best fit for the sanctuary’s needs.”

    RMW Productions installed four ICLX loudspeakers around the sanctuary for increased sound directivity toward the congregation. The ICLive X Series of steerable arrays is a complete, scalable system that offers high-quality, highly directional sound for any space, regardless of shape or size. From liturgical churches like St. John Vianney’s to massive contemporary worship events, faith communities can build the exact sound solution for their unique needs. The ICLX steerable array module includes six 19 mm compression drivers coaxially mounted in front of two 8-inch woofers. The woofer arrangements maintain significant pattern control down to lower frequencies, providing system designers with the horsepower, steerability and directivity to deliver consistent coverage and clarity in venues of all sizes. For a loudspeaker that can output massive volume, the ICLX is surprisingly compact and discreet, making it perfect for spaces like St. John Vianney that need the power to cover 1200 seats without visually intrusive loudspeakers compromising the worship atmosphere.

    The Renkus-Heinz exclusive Acoustic Source Multiplier (ASM) waveguide used in the ICLive X Series minimizes acoustic source spacing, ensuring optimal high-frequency steering with no lobe distortions for precise, consistent performance. Additionally, the ASM allows the high-frequency section to be coaxially mounted in front of the low-frequency section, producing a consistent and symmetrical wave of high and low frequencies along the entire length of the array for excellent performance through the critical mid-frequency crossover region.

    The church staff was thrilled with the audio improvements. Masses are intelligible for the entire nave — even parishioners sitting in the back of the large sanctuary can still understand the liturgy.

    Located along the banks of the slow-moving Nemunas River and surrounded by green meadows, the Old Church of St. John the Baptist stands alone as a sentinel against time. The picturesque Gothic church, with its striking steep-pitched roof, draws tourists and photographers from around the world to the Lithuanian town of Zapyškis. While the building is no longer used for religious purposes, it was given the status of a Cultural Monument in 2002 and is now a popular venue for cultural and music events like the annual Kite Festival and Pažaislis Music Festival. Steerable loudspeaker arrays from Renkus-Heinz were installed in the building to combat long reverberation times, improve intelligibility and enhance the experiences of festival attendees.

    Church staff contacted Vytautas Stasiukaitis, system designer at Audiotonas, to help redesign the audio system. As one of the largest audio, video and lighting solutions providers in the Baltic States, Audiotonas was well-positioned to help alleviate the church’s acoustic issues.

    “The church had very long reverberation times, and we weren’t allowed to install acoustic treatments of any kind due to its cultural designation,” said Stasiukaitis. “That’s why the only solution for this scenario was a beam-steered loudspeaker system from Renkus-Heinz.”

    Audiotonas installed and commissioned four IC8-RN digitally steerable loudspeakers called for in the audio redesign. A member of the ICONYX Gen5 Series, the IC8-RN gives sound system designers the power to create a system to cover even the most problematic spaces with up to four steerable beams that can be individually shaped and aimed. Their triple tweeter “array within an array” design reduces the distance between high-frequency sources for greatly improved performance with consistent, broad horizontal dispersion.

    Audiotonas added two CA112S-RN subwoofers to the system for the deep, rich bass response needed for festival performances. The CA112S-RN is a 12″ direct radiating subwoofer perfect for any application where strong, tight bass response is required, and the large ports ensure that no chuffing or fluttering noise ever mars the sound. Used singly, it’s the perfect match for adding bass to six- and eight-inch loudspeakers and steerable arrays. In multiples, like the installation at St. John the Baptist, it becomes an impressive and powerful addition to any music system requiring a compact subwoofer system.

    After hearing the new loudspeakers, the church leadership and staff were ecstatic with the audio improvements.

    Renkus-Heinz ICONYX Arrays Make a Clear Improvement in the 200-Year-Old Baltimore Basilica

    Constructed between 1806 and 1821, the Baltimore Basilica was the first Roman Catholic cathedral built in the United States. A National Historic Landmark, the 1200-seat Basilica underwent extensive restoration between 2004-2006 to implement modern systems throughout the building while restoring the interior to the original design. As with many houses of worship, the high ceilings and ubiquitous hard surfaces made for a challenging acoustic environment. Room reverberation measured 4.5 seconds at mid-frequencies and 6.1 seconds at low-frequencies. Digitally steerable arrays from Renkus-Heinz were the perfect solution to improve speech intelligibility.

    To improve acoustic performance, the Archdiocese of Baltimore turned to Neil Thompson Shade, FASA president and principal consultant of Acoustical Design Collaborative, for help. With experience in over 1000 projects, many dealing with historic preservation and houses of worship, Shade was well-positioned to help alleviate the Basilica’s acoustic issues. “‘Breathtaking’ is the only word I can come up with to describe the architecture,” said Shade. “Everything in the 200-year-old church’s interior had been restored to its original condition. The high, domed ceilings in the nave and above the congregation are beautiful but certainly added to the reverberation challenges.”

    The church contracted with HP Electronics to install and commission the four IC16-RN digitally steerable loudspeakers called for in the audio redesign. A member of the Renkus-Heinz ICONYX Gen5 Series, the IC16-RN gives sound system designers the power to create a system to cover even the most problematic spaces with up to eight steerable beams that can be individually shaped and aimed. Their triple tweeter “array within an array” design reduces the distance between high-frequency sources for vastly improved performance with consistent, broad horizontal dispersion.

    After commissioning, the average room Speech Transmission Index for Public Address Systems (STIPA), a quantitative measure of speech intelligibility, increased from 0.42 (poor) to 0.55 (fair), a significant gain based solely on four loudspeakers. The Archdiocese staff and clergy were delighted with the improved speech intelligibility and minimal disruptions during installation to ongoing worship services.

    “Because the Basilica is a historic building, sensitivity to aesthetics was an important consideration when selecting new loudspeakers. We could immediately tell that the Renkus-Heinz Iconyx loudspeakers were the right way to go,” said Shade. “The Basilica has a full calendar of activities and services, seven days a week, so the ease of installation and commissioning were significant factors in the success of this project.”

    Though now having decades of experience in the audio world, the ICONYX series has reached the fifth generation of products. ICONYX Gen 5 is the latest in beam steering technology, creating highly directional soundscapes for integrators to tune audio to an extreme degree. Gen5 offers connectivity with Audinate’s Dante systems as well as faster control and higher outputs.

    Renkus-Heinz debuted the UBX Series at the last ISE and have continued to expand on this line. These columns deliver the same beam steering sound as the ICONYX line in a much small footprint.

    Renkus-Heinz Excites the Fans at Pomona College’s Revitalized Voelkel Gymnasium

    Located near the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, Pomona College is a private liberal arts college in Claremont, California. College faculty and staff actively encourage students’ intellectual curiosity to help them discover their passions while making numerous resources available to support students’ emotional and physical well-being. The college’s 30-year-old recreation center no longer met the student body’s needs, so it embarked on a large-scale $55 million project to revitalize and expand the center’s offerings. Due to their high directivity and speech intelligibility, beam steering arrays from Renkus-Heinz were deployed in the main sports venue, Voelkel Gymnasium.

    Joseph Brennan, director of IT operations, turned to Darryl Lima, president of DJL, to design the audio system for the gym and supporting facilities. “Basketball courts and other sports facilities are very challenging acoustic environments,” said Lima. “The active, steerable line arrays were used to focus the sound in just the seating areas to minimize the acoustic aberrations of a sports court.”

    Four ICLive X Series loudspeaker arrays were flown above the gym while four TA151 compact loudspeakers were used as down-firing court fills. Each array comprised one ICLLX module, two ICLX modules, and two ICLX-118S subwoofers. Designed from the ground up to be the most scalable sound system ever created, the ICLive X Series brings a new level of flexibility for integrators, contractors and production/rental houses to provide the best solution for any application. The ICLive X arrays are equipped with Renkus-Heinz’s exclusive Acoustic Source Multiplier (ASM) waveguide, allowing the high-frequency section to be coaxially mounted in front of the low-frequency section. The result is consistent and symmetrical delivery of high and low frequencies along the entire array length for superior audio reproduction.

    The remodeled gym supports 21 NCAA teams and more than 1,800 intramural and 550 club athletes. The full-range frequency response, high power output for music reproduction, and superior speech intelligibility of Renkus-Heinz loudspeakers made them a perfect choice for the sports venue. Additionally, Renkus-Heinz staff brought extensive experience to the design phase and the final system commissioning process to ensure an optimal outcome.

    “The building was very challenging. The sports associations brought new minimum height restrictions into play, so everything ended up being flown,” said Lima. “But the system has received great reviews. It’s very focused and extremely powerful, a rare combination.”
