The new -RD1 lineup completes the Iconyx Compact Series portfolio – a line that first launched in 2020 as a response to integrators seeking coherent and steerable sound solutions in highly problematic acoustic spaces. With its compact footprint, the series brings performance and directivity to spaces where even the classic Iconyx arrays might be too large. The -RD1 models add improved interoperability and flexibility through Dante audio-over-IP functionality. They also bring new control options with integration into Crestron’s remote control solutions and environments.

The very narrow profile allows the Iconyx Compact Series to blend into nearly any environment, while exceptional directivity helps control even the most challenging acoustics. This brings the premium performance of beam-steered line arrays to even the most architecturally sensitive spaces and provides more opportunities for integration in the house of worship, corporate, transportation, education, and government markets.
The new products also offer full RHAON II beam-steering with the latest U.R.G.O beam algorithms, a movable acoustic center, multiple beam opening angles and high-pass filtering of individual beams. That means all the fidelity and musicality expected of a Renkus-Heinz product – just found in a footprint 40 percent smaller than the classic Iconyx.
The included wall-mount brackets make mounting easy and is nearly invisible behind the arrays. Standard RN units have analog and AES inputs.

FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif. — Founded in 1842, Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, is the oldest university in the Western United States. This innovative university with nearly 2,200 students offers a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in the arts and sciences, and post-graduate schools of business and law.
When the pandemic hit last year, Willamette University looked for ways to expand and improve its remote learning capabilities. The school’s 120-seat Paulus Lecture Hall in the College of Law needed a sound system upgrade to facilitate better remote and limited in-person lectures and discussions. Kyle House, the Audio Video Specialist for Willamette University, worked with Cascade Sound in Salem, Oregon, to upgrade the lecture hall’s sound system with powerful loudspeakers from Renkus-Heinz.
“Before we implemented the new system, we were using a pretty rudimentary pair of trapezoid box speakers which were put into an alcove above the screen. It was really primitive and ineffective and caused a lot of issues with reflections and feedback and very low intelligibility,” said House. “We needed a way to integrate the students in-person with those who are attending over Zoom. We needed a high-quality, highly-controlled audio solution so that way our microphone arrays can work properly in the space so everyone can be heard.”
House and the AV team selected a set of ICONYX Compact ICC12/3 arrays from Renkus-Heinz. The ICC12/3 offers the quality and flexibility of an ICONYX array but with a 40 percent smaller footprint. A 12-channel digital amplifier and DSP system powers the unit’s 12, 3-inch, full-range, high-sensitivity drivers. ICONYX Compact utilizes the full suite of RHAON II and Beamware, the Renkus-Heinz proprietary beam steering calculation and simulation program.
With a slim-profile design, the Renkus-Heinz loudspeakers match the aesthetics of the space
“We chose these speakers because we needed a solution that gave us extreme control over where the sound was placed in the room. This is an extremely challenging room with a fan-shape orientation, as well as stadium-style seating,” said House. “We have a lot of elevation change, and we also have a lot of highly reflective surfaces and even parabolic light soffits that were reflecting sound right back to the front of the room. Lapel mics weren’t even able to be used in the space.”
The ICC12/3 brings the performance and directivity of ICONYX to spaces where the classic ICONYX arrays may be too large. The reduced footprint allows the ICC to blend into the most architecturally sensitive spaces, while the high vertical directivity of the ICC12/3 can tame the most challenging acoustics environments.
“We used the RHAON software to configure the different steering lobes into the space, and it happened extremely quick. We had high intelligibility, great coverage, really quickly,” said House. “Having the ability to integrate the speakers and our microphones over Dante has been a huge benefit. We were able to integrate the Audinate devices to send audio around the room to different locations. It’s been extremely beneficial and helpful to make this whole system work seamlessly.”
With a slim-profile design, the Renkus-Heinz loudspeakers were able to match the aesthetics of the space and were integrated directly onto a nice, wood-wall surface in the lecture hall.
“The professors now can use lapel mics without any concern of feedback in the room itself. The remote students can hear clearly because the audio put into the space is being properly controlled. I would recommend Renkus-Heinz to anyone who has a challenging environment or wants the aesthetics that the Renkus-Heinz speakers offer,” added House. “They are an absolute necessity when you have an acoustically challenging space, and it’s extremely critical to put sound only where you need it and not on reflective surfaces. It’s also an excellent solution anytime that high intelligibility is really important.”
FOOTHILL Ranch, Calif.— Utah State University looks to provide “big-school opportunities with a small-school feel” at its Logan, Utah campus where a majority of its 28,000 students enroll each year. The university has a diverse offering of degrees across its eight colleges, and it boasts a unique drivability metric: six national parks are within a half day’s drive from campus.
The university also impresses with its robust AV offerings. Jim Wellings, the Senior Systems Designer and Programmer for the Academic and Instructional Services Department at USU, works to ensure the school offers high quality audio and video on campus and for remote learners alike. And when it comes to selling students on USU, one of the first things visitors hear is audio from Renkus-Heinz loudspeakers.
“Our Welcome Center, where we first present the campus to prospective students and parents, now features some impressive audio and video,” Wellings said. “The first thing you see is the display, which is atypical at a 32:9 aspect ratio. It’s about 40 feet wide and in full 4K quality. Then you hear the sound, which makes things even more impressive, and that is being provided by the Renkus-Heinz ICLive X system.”
Renkus-Heinz’s ICLive X series is the culmination of more than a decade of experience in steerable line arrays. The series is a complete system, designed from the ground up, and offers Renkus-Heinz’s exclusive Acoustic Source Multiplier (ASM) waveguide. The ASM allows the HF section to be coaxially mounted in front of the LF section. The coaxial driver arrangement delivers a consistent and symmetrical array of both high frequencies and low frequencies along the entire length of the array, allowing the freedom to choose any acoustic center available.

The Utah State Welcome Center uses five ICLive X modules in the room. Two ICLive XL modules are arrayed on both the left and right of the main display, and a single ICLive XL is located in the center of the room, above the display. Two ICLX118S subwoofers add powerful sub-bass to the system.
“We have it set up in stereo sound with the left and right used for media and the center used for dialogue reinforcement,” Wellings said. “It’s a large square room, which seems like it might not be the best for sound, but with Renkus-Heinz you know it’s going to sound excellent. This was no exception. The sound is great.”
Wellings said that confidence comes from the university’s past installations of Renkus-Heinz solutions. An auditorium, performance space, and large classroom at Utah State have all seen Renkus-Heinz integrations over the past few years.
“What I’ve found is that these offerings bring much more than your traditional loudspeaker,” Wellings said. “I tend to look for solutions that offer something extra, and I appreciate the work Renkus-Heinz does. We want everyone to feel like their space sounds amazing, be it for a concert or a welcome center. We achieve that with Renkus-Heinz.”

FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif. — South Windsor High School, the home of the Bobcats in South Windsor, Connecticut, recently updated its 660-seat theater on campus with a pro audio system that ensures every performance roars with crystal clear audio. And at the heart of the system are solutions from Renkus-Heinz.
“The previous audio system in the facility had very little directionality in the vertical plane which caused intelligibility issues,” said Bobby Kuhl, President and Senior Audio Engineer at KJR Engineering, the audio consultant on the project. “If you hit a snare drum on stage it came back to you just as loud. It wasn’t pretty. Further, there was a challenging mounting environment around the stage. We really only had a few specific areas where we could install the loudspeakers.”
Kuhl said those challenges led him to Renkus-Heinz, a brand that he says “sounds great in any environment.”
“When you have a problematic logistical environment for mounting, and problematic room acoustics, you know Renkus-Heinz is going to get the job done while sounding amazing,” Kuhl said. “And that’s what we got as a result. It sounds absolutely sensational in there now.”

The installation includes two Renkus-Heinz ICLive XL modules in arrays on both sides of the stage to cover the majority of the space. Two Renkus-Heinz ICLX118S subwoofers are installed in a central flown position above the stage in a cardioid end-fire arrangement, minimizing the energy of the subs on stage while still providing deep and powerful sub-bass to the rest of the room.

The series is the culmination of more than a decade of experience in steerable line arrays and the latest evolution of the medium-format, steerable line array in the Renkus-Heinz line. The ICLive X offers all the benefits of Renkus-Heinz steerable technology, allowing for sound to be digitally positioned precisely where you want it: on the audience.
Three Renkus-Heinz CX62 two-way Complex Conic loudspeakers are also installed to provide complete coverage in the front few rows of the theater. Complex Conic constant directivity waveguide design is another proprietary, cutting-edge Renkus-Heinz innovation that ensures consistent coverage across a space.
The system uses Audinate’s Dante for audio-over-IP connectivity throughout the space and connects to a QSC Q-SYS Core 110F for audio distribution, as well as both AV-over-IP native and third-party control over the entire system. A QSC CXD4.5Q amplifier powers the CX62 front fills.
Jereme Martineau, Director of Choral Studies and Theater Management at South Windsor High School, said the space will be used for many events, from meetings where speech intelligibility will be key to impressive musical performances.
“I can’t wait for students to return so we can hear actual performances in here,” Martineau said. “My competition level show choir is 50 students who are singing and dancing with professional lighting and a live rock band. This system is going to bring that event to another level. I am still amazed we got this level of quality and coverage from just a few speakers.”
Kuhl said he has confidence the system will perform in every situation thanks to Renkus-Heinz’ cutting-edge technology and the hands-on support provided by the company.
“Joe Fustolo from Renkus-Heinz came out to commission the system specifically for the space and when he was done the sound was just astonishing,” Kuhl said. “Everyone who hears this system is super impressed.”
Don Gamsjager, president of DNR Laboratories – the integrator of the system, agreed with Kuhl on all accounts.
“The support from Renkus-Heinz really is second to none,” he said. “This isn’t like what you see with other manufacturers where they just ship you product. Renkus-Heinz is there to support you every step of the way. And the result is symphonic. I am blown away by the SPL of the PA, the coverage and the actual dynamic range. The role will see Kathuria evolving these regions through the introduction of Renkus-Heinz technologies to the Pro AV community – including consultants, integrators and end users.
