    Chandler Theatre Upgrades With JBL VTX A6 System

    The Chandler Theatre, originally constructed for the 1982 Commonwealth Games, has long served as one of Brisbane’s most versatile performance spaces. With its original loudspeaker system reaching the end of life, the 1,500-seat venue required a modern upgrade capable of handling a wide range of programming, from school productions and orchestral concerts to national touring acts.

    After a competitive design process, a new sound system based on JBL Professional’s VTX A6 subcompact line array was installed by High Noon Stage Productions, with system consultation by XConnect Professional Services and support from Australian distributor MadisonAV. The result is a powerful yet discreet audio solution tha t balances performance with architectural and operational requirements.

    The final design features three hangs of eight JBL VTX A6 loudspeakers supported by three hangs of three VTX B15 subwoofers in cardioid configuration, powered by Crown I-Tech HD 4x3500W amplifiers. JBL Venue Synthesis software played a key role in system design, providing accurate modeling of coverage, drop heights, and load distribution. The compact form factor of the A6 and B15 systems proved essential in maintaining sightlines, reducing rigging weight, and fitting within the theatre’s cantilevered truss system.

    “The VTX A6 subcompact system allowed us to keep the hang height short enough to avoid blocking sightlines, keep weight down, while still delivering the required SPL,” said Glenn Thompson of XConnect. “The Venue Synthesis predictions proved remarkably accurate – the first hang went up exactly as modeled and didn’t require any adjustment.”

    With the upgrade complete, the Chandler Theatre now benefits from a rider-friendly system that has already impressed visiting engineers and performers. “Thanks to our new state-of-the-art JBL loudspeaker system, the venue can now attract new, fresh content while retaining the diverse programming we already host month to month,” said Alex Hutchison, General Manager of the Sleeman Sports Complex. “We’re genuinely excited about what lies ahead.”

    By combining the precision of JBL VTX loudspeakers with Crown amplification and expert local support, the Chandler Theatre has achieved a solution that honors the venue’s history while equipping it for the demands of contemporary productions.

    Hasley Chapel Calls Upon L-Acoustics Syva Professional Sound System to Complement the Room’s Natural Acoustics and Beauty

    Hasley Chapel, a new worship space nestled in the northwest corner of St. Andrew Methodist Church’s campus in Plano, Texas, was built with both visual and aural aesthetics in mind. Designed by Dallas-based architectural firm GFF, with audio system specification and installation provided by local integrator Clear ProAV, the picturesque chapel overlooking a pond and wooded area now routinely hosts a mix of traditional worship services, weddings, memorials, small conferences, and other events.

    According to St. Andrew Audio Manager Ryan Mansfield, the choice of loudspeaker brand for the new space was practically settled from the start. “We have Kara arrays installed in our main church sanctuary, and I really love their sound, so it made sense to turn to L-Acoustics again for our new chapel’s system,” he says.

    Small Space with Big Challenges
    Compared to the church’s primary worship hall, which hosts both contemporary and traditional music services, Hasley Chapel is more intimate, seating 120 people on the main floor and featuring a balcony that can accommodate a modest choir or audience overflow. But despite its diminutive size, the space presented some sizable challenges, says Clear ProAV Systems Designer Chad Fuller.

    “The look and feel of the chapel is beautiful, but there are a lot of reflective surfaces,” Fuller observes. The area behind the stage is all glass, while the stone side walls have windows and the building has a high-pitched roof. “It’s a traditional design, but with a modern take, and the aesthetics are huge. So everything we did, especially with the audio portion, had to fit into that. We really had to think about the system design from an ideal performance and coverage perspective, but in a way that would not detract from the beauty of the room.”

    Standing Out By Blending In
    Hasley Chapel’s solution came in the form of two colinear L-Acoustics Syva enclosures as the main left and right components of the PA. The Syva are RAL color-matched to visually melt in with the gray stone interior side walls where they are mounted, helping obscure the overt presence of audio technology in the room.

    Mansfield notes that he appreciates how the loudspeakers don’t stand out. “We also have two discreet Syva in our main building that we use for a side front-fill area, to bring the image down in our sanctuary,” says Mansfield. “And two of them were perfect for Hasley Chapel as well. They’re very visually unobtrusive and offer great coverage for that space.”

    Subs and Coaxials: the Rest of the Team
    Complementing Hasley’s Syva enclosures, six ultra-compact X4i coaxial enclosures are used for front-fills, installed within the second step of the stage at the front of the room. Clear ProAV coordinated with GFF to get the architectural clearance to insert the speakers behind custom screens. For low-end reinforcement, a pair of L-Acoustics Syva Sub and Syva Low enclosures on each side of the stage round out the frequency spectrum. These were chosen for their ability to deliver a solid low-end presence from a low-profile cabinet. Furthermore, two L-Acoustics X8 are surreptitiously mounted to a ceiling beam in the balcony, up with the lighting fixtures, providing coverage for that area when it seats a choir or churchgoers.

    Focusing on a Solid Start with Soundvision
    With so much glass and stone throughout the venue, sound reflections were obviously an initial concern, but the L-Acoustics systems offered Fuller and his team control in terms of speaker placement, dispersion, and tuning. With no sound dampening treatments done to the room, Clear ProAV needed to be very specific about system deployment, and L-Acoustics Soundvision design software offered both the contractor and client a high level of confidence in the final design prior to the construction and system integration taking place.

    “We were able to work with the architect during the chapel’s early planning stages to mitigate some potential issues,” says Fuller. “For example, we were able to request that the glass in the balcony be angled just a touch to avoid bad reflections bouncing back toward the stage. Soundvision was instrumental in helping us determine where we could position our loudspeakers so they’d be visually inconspicuous, but still provide the coverage we needed.”

    Syva Quickly Becomes a New Favorite
    This project marked the first time that Clear ProAV had worked with the L-Acoustics S Series, and the team was more than satisfied with the results. “Every project we do with L-Acoustics products just impresses us more,” Fuller declares. “Of course, we have our favorite models that we regularly install, including the A Series A15 and A10, and I know exactly what I’m going to get when I use those. But with Syva, Syva Low, and Syva Sub we got to work with a product range that we hadn’t used yet, and we were totally blown away by its output. At Hasley Chapel, everything is driven by a single LA7.16i amplified controller, which gave us all the amp channels and headroom we needed. That combined with Syva makes a fantastic system, for sure.”

    “The chapel has pretty decent acoustics, and can be used without reinforcement, but the Syva system adds a nice extra bit of clarity and presence, helping everything feel even more natural,” explains Mansfield. “It can be used quite sparingly to make the room sound nicer, but it’s also great when we push it as well. Everything is easy to use and sounds beautiful. Clear ProAV did a great job for us in there, and L-Acoustics clearly makes a superior speaker.”

    San Diego Symphony’s Jacobs Music Center Caps Off Three-Year Renovation with Installation of New L-Acoustics K3 Professional Sound System

    The Jacobs Music Center, home of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, reopened in fall 2024 following three years of renovations that included improvements to the hall’s acoustics, the addition of a choral terrace behind the orchestra, and the installation of brand-new sound, video, and lighting technologies. The hall, which seats just over 1,800 patrons, now features an L-Acoustics K3 LCR professional audio system with KS21 and KS28 subs, a separate Syva voice audio system, and X Series choral loft reinforcement, together with an assortment of front-fill and under-balcony speakers.

    Originally built as The Fox Theatre movie palace in 1929, the ornate hall has been the orchestra’s home since 1984. “The main reason for this renovation was the acoustical transformation for the orchestra on stage,” says Joel Watts, San Diego Symphony’s Audio Director. The orchestra is never amplified for strictly classical concerts, he stresses. “We don’t amplify unless it’s a creative stylistic choice.” But the various L-Acoustics systems, separately or in various speaker combinations, are available for the busy calendar of other concerts, comedy shows, corporate and civic events, and film screenings in the hall, which offers changeable acoustics around the stage following the upgrades.

    A Collaborative Design Approach
    The sound system design was a collaboration between the venue, L-Acoustics Applications Manager André Pichette, and François “Frankie” Desjardins at Solotech, which managed the integration. Audio consultant Shawn Murphy, a longtime symphony partner, also heavily contributed to the project. “Frankie has been instrumental with the audio design and Andre and the entire L-Acoustics team have been exceptional partners throughout the entire experience,” said Watts. The team had previously collaborated on the orchestra’s outdoor home, the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, which installed an L-Acoustics K2 system in 2021.

    Two Systems for Ultimate Flexibility
    The Music Center’s main sound system comprises three hangs of 13 K3 enclosures in an LCR configuration. Six KS21 subs, in cardioid configuration, are flown at the apex of the proscenium arch above the center K3 array. Six KS28 subs, also in cardioid, have additionally been permanently installed beneath the front of the stage. A dozen compact 5XT coaxials spread across the stage lip provide front-fill, augmented by individual X8i speakers mounted to the walls just beyond either side of the stage for expanded front-fill. A combination of five A10i and two X8 speakers are deployed as under-balcony fills, and one 5XT per side is installed in the venue’s upper-level “Angel Way” areas.

    The main performance system was designed with hang points, cabling, and power runs already implemented in preparation for the addition of two more arrays and surround speakers for an eventual upgrade to an L-ISA immersive configuration. “We’re ready for that next step and to be a leading partner in terms of technology and how we present the orchestra, or any music we do here,” Watts says. That pre-wiring means that the 5XT front-fills are driven by individual channels of an LA7.16i amplified controller, providing audience members in the front seats with stereo images. “Having that flexibility in amp channels and cable routing means those incremental improvements in resolution really make a difference for the audience.”

    The Performance system incorporates the Chorus Loft system, which covers the new upstage seating area. That system is deployed in a U-shape around the sides and back of the stage, configured as six pairs of two 5XT, each with a single low-profile SB10i sub, for a total of 12 5XT and six SB10i speakers. “We’ll either have patrons sitting there or we’ll have a chorus,” Watts explains. “If we’re doing a jazz show or a Pops concert with a chorus that needs a little piano or the main vocalist, they become monitors. For rock shows or more low-end-heavy shows, we’ll put up the SB10i subs.”

    A separate Voice audio system comprises six colinear Syva enclosures mounted on the hall’s front wall in three L/R pairs covering the orchestra, mezzanine, and balcony seating levels. Six ultra-compact X4i speakers are mounted below the 5XT front-fills in the stage face to support voice front-fill.

    Tailored Sound Throughout the Space
    “It’s a really tall room with three distinct acoustic environments: in front of the balcony on the lower level, behind the balcony on the lower level, and upstairs,” Watts comments. “They all sound different, so how do we make them translate the most similarly?” The solution lies in the PA’s dual-system design; because the configuration is essentially two systems in one, components can be mixed and matched for optimum performance. “We can use anything that’s permanently installed, like the subs under the stage, with our Voice system,” he notes.

    The new sound systems are controlled using several processors, mostly driven with L-Acoustics amplified controller DSP and DirectOut PRODIGY.MP devices. There is a DiGiCo Quantum5 digital mixing console at front-of-house with an SD12 desk on stage for monitors and an SD11 for day-to-day events. The system was designed so that every live sound input goes to the recording side via DiGiCo, Grace Designs, or Merging microphone preamps, and most recording inputs go to the live sound side. The new AoIP infrastructure incorporates RAVENNA, AES, and Optocore transports and network bridging.

    Endless Creative Possibilities
    Flexibility was key to the overall sound system design, since the venue regularly hosts everything from symphony concerts to comedy shows. Watts and his staff have distilled different PA settings into processor snapshots that can shape the sonic character for specific events while the essential tuning remains unchanged. “We have all these various configurations that we’ve been able to mold to get the best version of what we need for each show,” he says.

    “It’s a beautiful LCR system, but we can take that next step and create different atmospheres for the musicians and our audience,” Watts adds. “The music is first, but you don’t hear the music without sound. People initially think it might be too much PA for this place, but then you listen to it and realize this is exactly what it needed.”

Damerow has proudly overseen broadcast and technical teams for more than 13 years. The church serves thousands of people weekly and helps lead a global church planting network. As of late, Damerow was facing the fact that the existing gear was beginning to show its age, experiencing occasional dropouts and becoming increasingly difficult to manage in a crowded RF environment. The Canton campus, which serves as a broadcast hub for other locations and online services, required a robust and future-proof solution.

    Damerow admits that he had some reservations going into the project, saying, “I’m normally apprehensive to being an early adopter of technology. I like to let it live out there for a little bit, but after meeting with Sennheiser and a few other companies, I was fully confident to go full steam ahead with Spectera.”

    Damerow approached the upgrade with a deep sense of stewardship. “I personally give to this church, and so I also know that my money is going towards these investments,” he explained. His goal was to find a system that was an investment for the foreseeable future, not just a temporary fix. “Trying to have redundancy and resiliency in all of our mission-critical systems is always a goal.” Spectera checked all the boxes and more, and, with the help of the team at Integrated Production Solutions (IPS) Nashville, the system was installed.

    The decision to deploy 16 new Spectera body packs was a direct response to the nuanced needs of the church. Damerow and his team were particularly drawn to Spectera’s ability to pack a high density of channels into a single channel of spectrum, a critical feature as the RF landscape becomes more complex. The system’s bi-directional capabilities also offered unprecedented versatility. Revolution Church notably deploys a variety of handheld microphones from the Evolution Wireless G3/G4 300 and 500 series for events.

    The easy installation and simple setup process were a revelation. While the team had allocated days to configure the new system, they had it up and running in just 20 minutes. “It was so straightforward, that the whole team was pleasantly surprised at the simplicity of the install,” Damerow recalled. The intuitive web interface and the system’s smart functionality meant they could quickly save and redeploy configurations for different events, from a typical Sunday service to a student panel with multiple headset microphones.

    To ensure maximum reliability, the church configured a four-antenna setup, taking full advantage of the system’s built-in redundancy. They chose to use MADI for the primary audio input for its low latency, with a Dante network as a redundant failover — a testament to Damerow’s commitment to building a resilient system that minimizes risk.

    The impact on the ministry and its production team was immediate and transformative. The most striking improvement was the audio quality. The worship team — a mix of professional and volunteer musicians — experienced a profound difference in their in-ear monitors (IEMs). Damerow described the sensation as “taking the blanket off of our in-ear mixes” as they were able to hear a much wider frequency range and more detail than ever before. This newfound clarity boosted the confidence of the musicians and vocalists, giving them the freedom to perform at their best, which in turn lead to a noticeable improvement in the overall sound for the congregation.

    JBL CBT 50LA-1 speakers were installed in the women’s prayer hall to provide dedicated coverage while ensuring sonic separation from the main hall.     After a temporary break from a world tour that has straddled three continents, Grammy Award-winning EDM trio Rüfüs Du Sol will resume their global trek with a run of November shows in their native Australia and elsewhere. The journey, in support of the group’s most recent album, Inhale/Exhale, and its subsequent remix iterations, has included some of Rüfüs Du Sol’s biggest headline shows yet, including California’s Rose Bowl Stadium, Guadalajara’s Estadio Tres de Marzo, New Jersey’s Red Bull Arena, and Texas’ Q2 Stadium. Everywhere that Tyrone Lindqvist (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Jon George (keyboards), and James Hunt (drums) have traveled, crisp high-energy sound with robust low-frequency energy has followed, thanks to a huge L-Acoustics K Series system provided by Miami’s Unreal-Systems.

    The size and scale of the loudspeaker setup varies according to the venue. The tour’s shed-level design has 40 K1, 16 K2, a dozen A10, and 40 KS28 subs, all powered by 27 LA12X amplified controllers, while the stadium-sized system comprises 48 K1, 16 K2, six Kara II, 14 A10, four L2, five L2D, and 64 KS28 plus 16 K1-SB, driven by 56 LA12X and nine LA7.16. The Rose Bowl system – considered the “statement show” of the recent North American tour leg – brought together 64 K1, 16 K2, six Kara II, 14 A10, six L2, seven L2D, and a massive bass combination of 76 KS28 and 40 K1-SB subs, powered by 72 LA12X and 17 LA7.16.

    The entire system runs on a Milan-AVB signal path with a third layer of AES redundancy hitting each amplified controller. Fallback setup and management is particularly efficient with Milan Manager to handle the AVB network configurations. Front-end input is also managed over AVB, with analog backup, feeding main and backup L-Acoustics P1 processors at FOH.

    All About That Bass
    The LFE proved most challenging aspect of the system design, according to Systems Engineer Johnny Keirle, system designer and engineer for Adele, Benson Boone, and the Super Bowl, as well as RDS, as the trio is known to fans. “The biggest challenge is delivering the low-frequency impact and coverage required for live EDM,” he explains. “Unlike pop and rock shows, where low end is typically transient-based, RDS has sustained sub content alongside percussive transients, so we lean more on the ground subs than I usually would.”

    This required experimentation to balance coverage and impact. “Sheds present challenges with variable real estate for ground subs, steep seating, and concrete construction, while stadium shows demand much larger coverage across all axis with potential time-arrival variations, and multiple source interactions,” he describes.

    Ground-based KS28 subs are deployed in cardioid configurations wherever possible, says Keirle, while flown cardioid KS28 are deployed in end-fire configurations with the K1 main and side hangs. For the Rose Bowl system, the audio crew deployed an additional dozen K1-SB in an end-fire configuration behind the main hangs, and the increased ground sub lineup of 36 KS28 was deployed in 18 positions of subwoofer pairs running in cardioid.

    The L-Acoustics K Series systems are also able to help manage LFE challenges. K1 allows engineers to manipulate coverage characteristics in lower-frequency ranges, offering better control over flown LF propagation, as well as over interaction between the flown LF sources and ground LF sources. Extending the line source by adding K1-SB above the K1 main hangs further improves low-frequency control.

    “The K Series flexibility across diverse venue types and sizes makes it ideal for a tour spanning intimate sheds to massive stadiums. The adaptability of the system, alongside the precision of Soundvision modeling, allows confident deployment across vastly different acoustic environments, knowing the system will perform as predicted regardless of scale or venue characteristics.”

    L Series is a Switch Hitter
    The entire system acts as a sonic toolbox of sorts, allowing Keirle to choose components on site to best suit each environment, with the L Series acting as the go-to elements for many of the fill deployments. For instance, he says, the stadium shows use up to seven positions of L Series: two hangs of L2/L2D rear arrays, four positions of L2/L2D delays, and a standalone center L2D hang.

    “The cardioid polar pattern of the L2 is particularly valuable in delays, matched with cardioid-configured KS28 subs, and the voicing matches well with the K Series main system,” he says. “For the Rose Bowl, where we were limited with tower capacity, three L2 were flown per, with four KS28 on the ground, deployed as two cardioid stacks in an end-fire configuration. We were fortunate to be traveling with the full stadium system for the whole American run – we could pick and choose different PA elements for each venue as suited best.”

    In fact, all of the L-Acoustics products perform critical roles. “Some venues present particularly challenging and resource-demanding conditions,” he says, describing extremely harsh environments for HF propagation. “Again, I rely on the tools in Soundvision, with some custom calculators to know how sources will perform, even in challenging atmospheric environments,” he says, noting that many stadium shows are very exposed to wind. “The density and coherence of the K1 HF wavefront has been essential to maintain stable coverage and SPL at higher frequencies.”

    As the tour carries on in Oceania, the L-Acoustics loudspeakers will continue to prove their value. They also underscore the fact that, despite its reputation as a bass-heavy format, EDM has plenty of nuance that a system like this can reveal. “There is a huge amount of detail in the RDS live mix,” says Keirle. “FOH Engineer Cam Trewin’s output is exceptionally controlled and consistent, meaning I can confidently and precisely dimension the entire system for linear reproduction at high SPL. Smaller or less powerful formats wouldn’t deliver, and the layers of detail in the mix would get lost. This is a system that can, literally, do anything we ask of it.”

    Borgata Event Center Gets Major Upgrade with L-Acoustics L Series Professional Sound System

    “They wanted something rider friendly that could meet the needs of all their events, and they recognized L-Acoustics as a leader in rider requests,” explains Brian Naab, production manager for Horsham, Pennsylvania-based Bauder Audio Systems, speaking about the Event Center at Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. “The Event Center is a multi-purpose space that hosts everything from Seinfeld to Def Leppard. It’s comedians, it’s corporate, it’s luncheons, it can be full-blown rock and roll, and so they needed a versatile loudspeaker system that could handle everything equally well.”

    Borgata’s Event Center offers a 175′ x 175′ multi-use ballroom with a hydraulic-lift stage at one end that can sit from floor level up to five feet high. The venue can be transformed into different configurations depending on the type of event being presented, and the speed and ease with which rigging can be moved and the space transformed is also a major plus.

    According to Naab, the L-Acoustics L Series system is ideal for the Event Center because it meets the venue’s SPL requirements, and its more compact, slimmer profile improves sight lines, which Borgata’s production team appreciates. “The cardioid and supercardioid options vastly improve rejection behind the PA,” explains Naab. “So, for the corporate events, when they’ve got a CEO walking around on a lav, they’ll have far more gain-before-feedback, which is a great thing. On the other end of the spectrum, their rock and roll clients see the L-Acoustics name and immediately know that the system will provide the SPL and integrity that they’re looking for.”

    He notes that he sees installations and tours increasingly making the switch to L2 and L2D because of their “clarity, punch, directionality, size and weight, and incredible rigging speed.” Gone are the concerns over pins and angles, as all vertical adjustments are now done via software, and with Soundvision, dispersion can be precisely tailored to tightly blanket audiences from the front to back row.

    Fast and Flexible Performer

    “It was important to get something we can move pretty quickly,” says Borgata Production Manager Scott Reagan. “The way the system’s so tunable in the software was a big win for us. The thing that pushed it to L-Acoustics, for me, was the ease of use going up and down and how transparent the sound was. Sarah McLachlan’s tour brought an L Series system here, and it was the best I’d heard our room sound.”

    Following the L-Acoustics upgrade, the Center’s typical concert configuration features a 16-foot thrust stage that juts out downstage of the proscenium as an extension to the permanent stage. The PA is flown downstage of that extension, and it consists of a left-right setup of two L-Acoustics L2 over one L2D per side, with six KS28 subwoofers per side flown behind the mains in a cardioid configuration. Eight Kiva II enclosures spread out across the stage lip handle front-fill duties, while an X12 per side covers the gaps on the far edges. The system is fed via an L-Acoustics P1 processor and measurement platform that converts signals from a tour’s consoles into a redundant Milan-AVB drive system.

    For comedy performances, the stage thrust is omitted, and the PA flies just downstage of the proscenium with only one L2 over one L2D per side, while the subs are reduced to four per side. With the stage extension removed, the entire hang moves from 20 feet downstage to about four feet downstage of the proscenium. The subs also move offstage of the mains.

    The system’s flexibility shines with the venue’s multiple configurations. The Event Center features removable bleachers, a two-thirds house soft curtain, and a half-house hard airwall. “We can fly the PA in one configuration but recall different settings appropriate for each room size,” explains Borgata A1 David Frank. “Whether we’re running with airwalls closed, bleachers in or out, or different size configurations, we have two hang positions and can instantly optimize the sound. That’s a real plus.”

    Good coverage is also of paramount importance. “Our coverage has gotten a lot better thanks to the quality and tonality of the speakers,” continues Frank. “We now have a complete system that handles everything—no more renting or pulling gear from trucks.”

    Superior Performance and Problem-Solving

    Naab says that the room sounds “amazing” now with consistent coverage everywhere in the space. “We’ve found that L2 is really nailing that consistency throughout every project we’ve deployed it on,” he adds. He credits much of that success to L-Acoustics Soundvision acoustical modeling software. “We trust in it,” he confirms. “It’s nice to share our thoughts with the client through Soundvision, and be able to very accurately predict the SPL and coverage that they’re going to achieve.”

    The system also solved a persistent acoustic problem. Reagan notes that previously the venue had some slapback issues where sounds would bounce off the back wall when the airwall was in. “With Soundvision and L2, they just hit the button, and it stops the frequencies from bouncing off that wall,” he says. “You get crystal clear audio without having to move anything or treat the walls or deal with anything else. Technology at its finest right there.”

    “And tours keep commenting on how much quieter the stage is,” Reagan adds. “One engineer was amazed – he thought everything was off running through the front of house system because the stage was so clean. That’s just how well the cardioid pattern controls directivity.”

    Frank says the system “has a good response, and it sounds great,” he remarks. “It meets our high expectations and the expectations of our headliners.” He also feels that the Borgata audio team is constantly learning with the L2 system and all of its possibilities. “We host a lot of events here and regularly go back and forth between the concert and the comedy setups, so speed of switchover is of the essence. We’re still in the process of learning how to best streamline the room’s overall reconfiguration, but the L Series loudspeakers are already a big part of helping that go as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

    Reagan and Frank offer major props to Bauder Audio, praising their quality service and how they packaged the system and set up its different configurations, as well as to Bauder A1/Systems Engineer Craig “Junior” Kaufmann for being indispensable in understanding the new system and readily available to help with questions.

    Cy-Fair ISD Visual and Performing Arts Center Creates Engaging Experiences with L-Acoustics Professional Sound System Featuring L-ISA Immersive Technology

    Houston is Texas’ most populous city, one that has no shortage of impressive live music venues or theatrical stages. But less than a half-hour drive northwest of downtown “Space Town,” there’s something that might outshine them all. Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (Cy-Fair ISD) has built a new Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC), a modern 85,000-square-foot complex, and its centerpiece 1,536-seat Main Theater is likely the envy of every arts student down the road. One of the key reasons for this can be attributed to its amazing audio facilities, where more than 100 L-Acoustics loudspeaker enclosures combined with L-ISA technology allow productions staged at VPAC to be experienced by patrons in full 360-degree immersive sound.

    Jaffe Holden (JH), a Trinity Consultants team, was brought into the project early on by architect PBK to supply VPAC’s acoustical and AV designs. “In discussion with the client, the concept of creating an immersive environment came up as a way in which they could set a new standard and provide the best opportunities for their students,” recalls JH Associate Principal Carlos Rivera. “VPAC was designed to be a ‘students-first’ building, and having the ability to learn how to use object-based mixing is something that very few other school districts presently offer.”

    “We also wanted to provide an unparalleled experience for our clients and guests in a venue that the community will use as well,” adds Cy-Fair ISD Assistant Director of Production Services Sean Ramsey, noting that the double-balconied Main Theater accommodates approximately 150 bookings a year, with more than half of those being outside rentals or community uses. “We want to attract other groups to our venue in order to bring more arts to our area.”

    Scenes, Subs, and Surrounds
    Local integrator LD Systems, now a Clair Global brand, installed the new venue’s speaker system. The Scene system features five arrays of four L-Acoustics A15i Focus enclosures over two A15i Wide, collectively powered by 14 LA4X amplified controllers. Eight KS21i subs are flown in cardioid hangs of four on either side of the center Scene array and are driven by a single LA12X. For surround, a total of 47 A10i Wide are spread out across the ceiling, side and rear walls, and balcony face to deliver a fully immersive audio experience, which is further reinforced by eight stage-lip-mounted X4i for spatial front-fill and nine 5XT underbalcony-fills, all powered by LA2Xi. Inputs are spatially processed by an L-ISA Processor II housed in a rack at FOH paired with a DiGiCo Quantum338 mixing console.

    Onstage, an assortment of coaxial L-Acoustics systems are available for monitoring, including four X15 HiQ wedges, four X12, and eight smaller X8. Rounding out the new facility’s loudspeaker complement are two sets of colinear Syva and Syva Low cabinets, deployed as needed for portable PA use in the lobby or on an outdoor stage.

    A15i and A10i Fit the Bill
    “The L-Acoustics A Series are very ‘musical’ boxes that provide a great solution for fixed array conditions that don’t require a long throw,” explains Rivera. “They also fit the SPL and coverage needs for the venue’s programming while meeting the district’s budget requirements.”

    “Aesthetically, the curvature of the A15i main PA arrays aligned with the acoustic reflectors above the stage creating a seamless blend with the architecture, and the A10’s Panflex adjustments were critical in aiming the surround speakers to maximize audience coverage and prevent spill onto walls,” he continues. As for the X Series systems, he adds: “They deliver an impressive SPL for their size, which solve a variety of architectural challenges.”

    A Grand Opening, Indeed
    Cy-Fair ISD’s inaugural event in VPAC’s Main Theater featured a 60-piece orchestra with 120 vocalists upstage and another choir downstage. “We delivered excellent sound with every performer clearly heard, and our VPAC technicians noted how much easier it was to achieve powerful, clear vocals here compared to other venues they work in,” Ramsey enthuses.

    “Since then, our immersive system has elevated countless events by complementing the room’s natural acoustics. We’ve used it for everything from school choirs, classical orchestras, and jazz ensembles to mariachi performances, ballets, and major touring concerts. Its fidelity and coverage are outstanding, and we’ve enjoyed using the immersive sound field to create a deeper emotional impact—connecting guests to performers and presentations in a more natural, engaging way.”

    L-ISA Technology for the Win
    JH’s Rivera is quick to point out that L-ISA designs are a “win” for projects like VPAC that have ambitious sound output goals but limited height available to deploy longer arrays. “This system provides an equivalent SPL from a much smaller PA hang while maintaining a coherent time response because of the object-based mix processing,” he says. “L-ISA also provides flexibility for a variety of programs and configurations, giving designers and operators freedom to create unique experiences for their audiences.”

    Ultimately, for Ramsey and the larger technical production team at Cy-Fair ISD, the L-Acoustics A Series-based system paired with immersive L-ISA technology easily earns an A+ grade. “This was absolutely the right system for the space,” he says. “It allows our guests to feel like they’re part of the performance, not just listening through a PA. With L-Acoustics, we can seamlessly blend the room’s natural acoustics with amplified sound, delivering the highest level of musical and performance experiences.”

    Dude Perfect has a jaw-dropping talent for making the seemingly impossible possible. Since launching their YouTube channel 15 years ago as college roommates at Texas A&M University, the “Dudes” – Tyler “Beard” Toney, twin brothers Cory and Coby Cotton, Cody “Tall Guy” Jones, and Garrett “Purple Hoser” Hilbert – have posted hundreds of athletic trick shots that have garnered them more than 60 million subscribers and over 17 billion views. Perhaps just as challenging as acing those long-distance “nothing but net” throws is the act of taking the popular online show live on the road, which Dude Perfect recently did with its 21-date Hero Tour of the United States.

    The 46 Entertainment-produced tour’s national run kicked off on July 2 at Colorado Springs’ Broadmoor World Arena and wrapped up on August 3 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. For the trek, 46 Entertainment tapped Orlando-based L-Acoustics Certified Provider LMG Touring to supply a full complement of 20 L Series loudspeaker enclosures, which were deployed as main hangs (three L2 flown over one L2D per side), out-fill arrays (two L2 over one L2D per side), and delay systems (two L2 over one L2D per side).

    L Series: Clearly the Right Choice

    The unique nature of the tour presented its own novel share of sonic hurdles, starting with the fact that “this is five guys on wireless headset mics out in front of the PA, and we’re needing to get vocal clarity above a crowd that is screaming at 98 to 102 dB for most of the show,” describes Front-of-House Engineer Jeff Sandstrom on his third tour of duty with the troupe. “L2’s gain-before-feedback and rear rejection have been mission-critical in achieving high intelligibility throughout each venue. I’ve also been super impressed with the evenness of the system’s frequency response, the breadth of coverage, and the clarity of speech, even when all of the guys onstage are talking – or shouting – at once. This system really is fun to mix on.”

    Having sold out most of the arenas on the trek, he notes, “We’re in large rooms every night and the people who paid good money to sit in the top row of the back section of the arena deserve a similar experience to the VIPs down front. L Series gives us that added clarity and presence no matter where you’re sitting. The previous Dude Perfect tour used K1 and K2, which are great, but I feel that L2 has even more of an impact in presence and articulation, especially in certain areas of the arena. It’s been a huge success.”

    A Cohesive System from Top to Bottom

    Directly behind each of the main L2/L2D arrays which are inherently cardioid, LMG deployed a hang of eight L-Acoustics KS28 subwoofers in a cardioid arrangement. “There’s a cohesiveness that happens throughout the frequency spectrum because the subs and the mains really complement each other,” Sandstrom notes. “But the L Series have so much body in the low-mid and low frequencies that the subs are really just there to augment what’s happening in the mains.”

    He goes on to explain that the Hero Tour program “doesn’t have a ton of sub information. We have a DJ and some video playback, but the focus of the show is the Dudes, who all use DPA headset mics, and the full-bodied nature of L2 helps drive and accentuate that. I don’t feel like the subs and mains are two different elements – it’s one cohesive thing. No matter where in the frequency spectrum the program material is coming from, it’s very even and well-balanced.”

    Up and Out of the Way

    For Production Manager Mason Felps of 46 Entertainment, the compact form factor of the L Series arrays meant that the audio system was less visually obtrusive, especially with the presence of large video screens. “L2 is a smaller system, so we’re able to fly it higher and get it out of the view of the video content, which is a key aspect of this show – and it still covers the entire floor, which is amazing,” he says. “Having more L2 out in the house for delay is another great element. They allow the upper bowl seats to hear the show crystal clear. Even in the tallest and biggest venues we’ve had no coverage issues.”

    Streamlined Setup

    Systems Engineer Jacob Moore was tasked with the Soundvision design process and deploying the system at each tour stop, and his impression of L Series, particularly from a logistics and deployment perspective, is just as favorable. “L2 doesn’t require much truck space and is super-efficient to load in and out,” he asserts. “It also flies incredibly fast within the flow of the build process. There’s no finicking with angles or having to teach new stagehands how to preset angles. It’s very easy to come into a new venue with completely new faces and be able to get the rig up in the air in a timely manner.”

    “Honestly, I would prefer to have the L Series for every job I do; it’s just so easy to use and sounds so high-fidelity,” he adds. “For the longest time, K2 has been my favorite box from L-Acoustics. Now, having gotten my hands on the new L Series, it’s neck and neck for which one I would actually prefer. But as far as ease of use, speed, and efficiency, L Series wins hands down every time.”
