Over the course of 10 years, renowned sculptor Barry X Ball designed, built, and outfitted one of the most unique and technologically advanced art production facilities in New York City. Stationed in an expansive ground-level Brooklyn studio, Ball and his staff use modern tools and techniques including digital modeling, 3D scanning, and 3D printing to create stunningly detailed sculptures that each require up to 10,000 hours of handwork to complete.
After recognizing that many passersby try to sneak a peek in the windows to see what was inside the building, Ball chose to connect with the local community more directly by installing a 49-inch high-brightness LG outdoor digital display (model 49XE4F) on the building’s facade to exhibit the studio’s work and processes to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even in direct sunlight.
“I have a mix of still images and videos of my sculptures and their fabrication processes playing every minute of every day on the exterior display,” Ball explained, “resulting in significant increases in positive comments and questions from the busy cacophony of residents, visitors and local professionals who frequent Williamsburg / Greenpoint for jobs and activities related to creative design, art, film, photography and fashion. It’s wonderful to share my work and the work of my team with the local community in a more direct way, and it adds to the experience of visiting here without expressly advertising my name or sales – the art itself is the point.”
Knowing the value of premium technologies, Ball looked to LG to provide an art-worthy display solution that excels at presenting detailed, high brightness images in sunlit conditions without glare, which the 4,000-nit display, and its anti-reflection coating, handle with ease. The final result is an attractive, meaningful addition to the artistic neighborhood and community.
Ball’s studio employs the latest digital technologies, sources rare stone and minerals from global locations and works with precious metals to deliver truly original artworks that frequently grace the halls of museums and galleries across the United States, Europe and Asia. Thanks to the new outdoor LG digital display, more people than ever can enjoy and revel in the experience and emotions Ball’s sculptures deliver.
A variety of LG’s leading commercial displays have recently been featured in various museum constructions and art installations, including the Frieze New York 2022 art fair, the Savoy Automobile Museum and an exhibit at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. Showing the company’s appreciation and reverence for art in society, LG also launched a collaboration with digital art delivery service Blackdove in 2021 to bring digital art to the home.
LG presented Ball’s first NFTs at Frieze Seoul 2022 – the premier of LG’s Art Lab. Ball’s NFTs will be displayed on LG’s latest OLED monitors.
