    BYU Marriott Center Makes a Long Throw Look Easy with L-Acoustics K2 Professional Sound System

    Brigham Young University’s Marriott Center in Provo, Utah has the largest seating capacity of any basketball arena in the Big 12 Conference and the eighth-largest seating capacity of any on-campus basketball arena in the United States, accommodating nearly 18,000 fans. What’s also big about the Marriott Center is its sound, as its quality has always been an important part of making the venue desirable for both fans and ballplayers. Over a decade ago, the University installed an L-Acoustics Kara PA system there that added a heightened sonic dimension for the BYU Cougars men’s and women’s basketball teams that call the venue home. In 2024, the Marriott Center did it again, this time installing a new L-Acoustics K2 system in time for the new college hoops season.

    “The venue has sounded great for over a decade, but they wanted it to sound even bigger,” says Bryce Stettler, AV System Designer and Project Engineer at Poll Sound, the Salt Lake City-based integration firm that handled both projects. He notes that BYU was intimately familiar with L-Acoustics sound quality, given the arena’s prior Kara system, plus a dV-DOSC system installed at BYU’s 1,200-seat DeJong Concert Hall in 2009. “They wanted a more full-range sound to accommodate more kinds of music and L-Acoustics K2 was the perfect choice.”

    The new sound system was primarily designed by Brad Streeter, Director of Audio Visual Services at BYU’s Office of Information Technology, in consultation with L-Acoustics engineers, and installed by Poll Sound, which also assisted with commissioning, tuning, and calibration. “Our primary motivation for upgrading to the K2 was headroom, particularly for sporting events, to be able to get above the noise of the crowd – led by BYU’s ROC [Roar of Cougars] student section – without overdriving the system. The additional headroom was needed without sacrificing sound quality and intelligibility,” says Streeter, adding that the arena is a multi-use facility that hosts a wide range of events, including a weekly campus-wide devotional, University commencement, music concerts, and dance performances.

    The latest L-Acoustics installation comprises eight arrays of nine K2 each, which address the arena’s lower bowl seating below the concourse and are powered by LA12X amplified controllers. Coverage of the seating above the concourse is handled by 16 delayed arrays of one Kilo over five Kiva, each powered by recently-upgraded LA4X, while two arrays of six repurposed Kara enclosures flown adjacent to the central scoreboard cover the court floor. The system is rounded out by a pair of P1 processors, which feed signals to the amps and speakers over Milan-AVB.

    Although most of the Kara from the previous system have been repurposed at other venues on campus, the delay speakers and subwoofers from the earlier installation remain in place. Speaking of low end, Stettler notes that K2’s ability to reach effortlessly down to 35 Hz has added tremendously to basketball’s bass-heavy culture there. “So much full range coming from each one of those arrays has been really helpful in maintaining the low end everywhere,” he says. “We’re actually getting a lot more low frequency reinforcement from the K2.”

    The Marriott Center needed more impact for music and sound effects for games, as college basketball has become as much about entertainment as it is sport, but Stettler points out that the venue is also used for a number of other applications, such as live events, and those especially needed enhanced speech intelligibility. “In addition to impact for the games, they were also looking to enhance the sound of events held there,” he says, “so it was a big deal to keep it to where speech was really intelligible, especially for larger crowds.”

    Brad Streeter, who also designed the sound for Brigham Young University’s School of Music Building, competed in 2023, says the school has its own engineering team that has the depth to design the audio for venues such as these, as well as the ability to do much of its own systems integration, relying on Poll Sound as a partner for these kinds of larger projects. For the new system update at the Marriott Center, he says they were able to largely follow the same design as the previous system, for box location and positioning. “What’s great about L-Acoustics is that we knew what to expect from the new system, in terms of coverage and performance quality, even before it was installed thanks to Soundvision and our prior experience with Kara,” he says. “We knew going in that the K2 system would sound and perform great, which really gave us confidence in making this investment.”

    Stettler says the Marriott Center is emblematic of college sports venues becoming more attuned to sports as a form of entertainment, with the need for more full-range sound. “We’ve spent a lot of time educating our bigger university clients as to the difference in a premium system like L-Acoustics, and now they’re starting to realize that there is a big difference in that,” he says. “They’re becoming a lot more aware of the brands that have become important in entertainment and that are finding their way into sports, more recently at the college level. This is a market that wants the same kind of sound that you come to expect from concert tours and professional sports, and L-Acoustics certainly provides that.”

    Nobu Toronto: Fabulous Food and Sumptuous Sound with L-Acoustic

    Founded in 1994 by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro, and movie producer Meir Teper, Nobu has long been a global icon of fine and adventurous dining. The first Canadian location of the iconic brand in Toronto is part of the Nobu Hotel, Restaurant & Residences project, the latest addition to the city’s increasingly sophisticated nightlife scene. The 10,000-square-foot, two-level, 278-seat restaurant includes separate bar and lounge spaces, two private dining rooms, a sushi bar, and an outdoor terrace. And while the fish is fabulous, Nobu Toronto also comes with a delicious sonic ambiance as well, thanks to an L-Acoustics X Series professional sound system designed by local consultant Mulvey & Banani Audio Visual, integrated by The 192 Group.

    “A venue like this is going to be more than a restaurant, so it has to have more than just a sound system,” explains Corry McGibbon, President of The 192 Group. “Throughout Nobu, everything is very, very high end,” he continues. “The music is a curated part of the environment, just like the lighting, décor, and food, so the quality of that music is as important as all the other design choices that contribute to creating the Nobu ambience.”

    One of the primary challenges of this project was to integrate powerful sound into the venue’s architecture. “We landed on L-Acoustics – it is one of Nobu’s existing brand standards – because it blended in perfectly,” states Gregory Rushton, Vice President at Mulvey & Banani Audio Visual. “X Series are high-performance speakers in a very small package. There’s only a handful of manufacturers that capable of doing that.” The venue required even sound coverage throughout the cavernous space and it needed to be powerful enough to provide both dynamic background music and event-grade reinforcement for visiting DJs.

    Nobu Toronto’s overall design reflects, says McGibbon, a maturing metropolis’ changing nightlife. “The vibrant nightclub community that Toronto was known for a decade ago has transformed into a more muted supper club and lounge scene,” he explains. “Higher-end restaurants are the linchpin of that market. Just as excellent sound was critical to the success of nightclubs, so it is for the current, restaurant-based nightlife. It’s a demographic shift, and the technology has to follow that.”

    The L-Acoustics installation at Nobu Toronto features a distributed system of 22 coaxial X8 enclosures, one larger X12, and 25 ultra-compact 5XT speakers, plus a dozen ceiling-mounted SB10i subs, spread over two levels. Everything is driven by LA7.16i and LA4X amplified controllers.

    The bar and dining areas are separated into multiple zones, and McGibbon credits the LA7.16i with helping the venue manage the complexities. “It gives us a lot of flexibility to attain full coverage, managing the quantity of speakers and achieving quality audio in all of the zones within the space,” he says. “The subs, in particular, add to the nightclub feeling, without overpowering diners.”

    Nobu’s new L-Acoustics professional sound system delivers on the venue’s high-end ambitions. Initial feedback from high-end events, such the recent Toronto International Film Festival and Fashion Toronto, have been positive. “Nobu Toronto represents the next level of sophistication, and it achieves that thanks, in part, to the same kind of sound you’d find at the best concerts, which comes from L-Acoustics,” McGibbon concludes.

    Justice Juanita Kidd Stout Center for Criminal Justice Upgrades Its Audio Clarity with AtlasIED Loudspeakers

    The Justice Juanita Kidd Stout Center for Criminal Justice is a seventeen-story courthouse located in Philadelphia that serves as the main criminal courthouse for the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania. It recently completed a major audio upgrade to address outdated and problematic AV systems in its 65 courtrooms.

    Completed in 1994, the courthouse’s original AV systems were becoming problematic, with many end-of-life components and poor audio in several courtrooms. Following a competitive bidding process, Houser Audio was selected to oversee the courthouse’s much-needed upgrades.

    “Crystal clear audio is critical in courtrooms,” said Andre Houser, President of Houser Audio. “Poor or muffled audio can bias an audience. Everyone needs to hear what’s being said so that there’s no misinterpretation and everything is recorded properly. If they don’t clearly hear all of the information, the results could be catastrophic.”

    Houser Audio’s team installed 12 AtlasIED FC104T ceiling speakers in each of the 51 standard courtrooms throughout the building, while 15 loudspeakers were installed in each of the three larger ceremonial courtrooms. Given the proliferation of microphones in each courtroom, the audio systems were configured as a matrixed mix-minus solution to minimize feedback.

    The compact, full-range 4” FC104T ceiling speakers are ideal for voice transmission, music, and signal reproduction in commercial, industrial, and institutional applications, especially those requiring a high-quality loudspeaker.

    Given the mission-critical nature of the courthouse, the original schedule was for seven weeks of installation, completing two courtrooms a day—a very difficult timeline to adhere to, but one which Houser Audio successfully accomplished. Despite some initial infrastructure hurdles, Houser’s phased rollout enabled the team to make necessary adjustments, providing considerable flexibility for long-running court cases.

    Another feature of the upgrade included HDMI table grommets, which enabled attorneys to display evidence from their laptops. To accomplish this, Houser’s team installed fiber optic HDMI cables through the floor, effectively eliminating trip hazards and protecting the cables to extend their life span.

    During the installation process, Houser’s team received praise and thanks from court personnel, who noted the improved functionality and significant improvement in audio clarity. The rollout plan was also advantageous for Houser’s team because it allowed them to make necessary adjustments and apply them to future rooms. When the project was finished, everyone was pleased with the outcome.

    “We’ve been AtlasIED dealers for over ten years,” said Houser. “Going with AtlasIED speakers for this job just made so much sense. The performance was great, and they also had all 600 loudspeakers in stock, which is unheard of. I love working with them.”

Sennheiser’s popular live demo meeting rooms will showcase the TeamConnect (TC) Bar S and M – the most feature-rich all-in-one conferencing devices in their class – as well as the TeamConnect Ceiling Medium (TCC M) microphone, with its award-winning design and seamless sound, including automatic dynamic beamforming and TruVoicelift in action. Attendees can join the TC Bar demo every 20 minutes and the TCC M demo every 30 minutes during show hours.

    The Professional Digital Wireless Zone

    ​Sennheiser will provide deep dives into its bidirectional wideband Spectera ecosystem, which is based on the company’s decade-long research into Wireless Multichannel Audio Systems (WMAS) technology. Guests are invited to listen in to the system’s combined mic and IEM bodypacks, with Sennheiser RF experts on hand to answer questions about this ground-breaking technology.

    The company’s narrowband digital solutions Digital 6000 and EW-DX with the new four-channel Dante receiver will also be on display, with an associated “mic play table” providing guests with the rare opportunity to try out all available Sennheiser and Neumann capsules with a handheld, as well as head-worn and lavalier mics with a bodypack transmitter to find the ideal combo for their voice. Listening is via the Sennheiser HD 490 PRO and Neumann NDH 30 studio headphones.

    On the wired side, Sennheiser will display its best microphone series, the MKH RF condenser microphone line with the latest addition, the MKH 8030 figure-of-eight microphone. Alongside the MD 435, the high-rejection MD 445 as well as the evolution e 935 and 945 vocal microphones, the MD 421 Kompakt – the mic for anything – will be part of the ISE showcase, as will the HMD broadcast headsets.

    The Immersive Zone featuring studio monitoring solutions from Neumann

    ​Neumann will present its innovative reference monitoring solutions in the Immersive Zone of the Sennheiser Group booth. The setup will include Neumann’s renowned KH line of studio monitors as well as the MT 48 audio interface running the Monitor Mission. Also, Neumann will preview an all-new product: RIME – Reference Immersive Monitoring Environment. RIME is a plug-in for DAWs, enabling users to monitor immersive formats such as Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 via headphones using novel AMBEO algorithms. In contrast to existing solutions, RIME is tailor-made for Neumann NDH 20 and NDH 30 headphones. In fact, the software incorporates an entire Neumann signal chain of KH speakers, perfectly aligned via MA 1 in a reference room, captured using the KU 100 binaural head via the MT 48. The result is ultimate sound quality and precision. RIME can also be used for externalization of stereo playback, making headphones sound like studio monitors.


    In addition, Neumann will be part of the Audio Content Creation Zone, showcasing the MT 48’s mobile recording capabilities. Being class-compliant, the MT 48 can record in highest audio quality to an iPad or iPhone. For mobile use, the MT 48 can be powered from a USB power bank (min. 25 W). Also shown will be Made-to-Order products including KH monitors as well as microphones in various colours.

At NAMM, visitors can experience the new ULTRA-X80™ loudspeaker, the award-winning PANTHER™ line array, and powerful tools like Spacemap® Go and Nebra™ in action. With multiple award nominations, including the TEC and Parnelli Awards, Meyer Sound is proving its leadership in audio technology.

    At ISE, Meyer Sound will highlight its Milan-certified ULTRA family speakers, the NADIA™ digital audio platform, and the compact USW-112P™ subwoofer. Enhanced software features and system solutions take center stage, demonstrating their commitment to seamless integration and improved workflows for AV and IT professionals.

    Meyer Sound returns to The NAMM Show, taking place in Anaheim January 23–25, showcasing the versatile ULTRA family of point source loudspeakers. An intimate demo room setting will provide opportunities for hands-on experiences of the scalability and performance of these cutting-edge solutions, as well as a chance to hear the new ULTRA-X80™ point source loudspeaker, which is now in production.

    The NAMM Show will also be a stage for the “perfect pairing” of the award-winning PANTHER™ large-format linear line array loudspeaker and the 2100-LFC™ low-frequency control element, which took the industry by storm in 2024. Additionally, the Constellation® acoustic system is being inducted into the TECnology Hall of Fame, highlighting Meyer Sound’s ongoing contribution to audio excellence. At the Parnelli Awards on January 24, the ULTRA-X80 is nominated in the Indispensable Audio category, and Katharine “Katie” Murphy Khulusi, Meyer Sound’s director of loudspeaker development, is nominated for the Parnelli NextGen Award, recognizing her instrumental role in advancing loudspeaker technology.
