  • Powersoft Unica Anchors AHT Marine’s Yacht Audio Platform

Powersoft Unica Anchors AHT Marine’s Yacht Audio Platform

Space, weight, power efficiency and reliability are constant constraints in yacht design. For AHT Marine, a technology integration firm with more than two decades of experience in the marine sector, those constraints increasingly shaped decisions around audio amplification. Over the past year, AHT Marine has moved toward standardizing on amplification from Powersoft for its yacht projects, citing power density, network compatibility and long-term reliability as the primary drivers.

Founded in 1996 as Advanced Home Theater, AHT Marine has built a global reputation designing and integrating high-end entertainment, control and automation systems across residential, commercial and marine environments. In the yacht market, the firm delivers complete technology ecosystems, including audio, video, lighting, environmental control, IT networks, communications and security, often within extreme physical and operational limits.

One of the most significant factors behind AHT Marine’s decision to utilize Powersoft was the relationship between amplifier output and physical footprint. On yachts, equipment racks are often fixed early in the design process and cannot be expanded later without structural changes. The electrical rooms and audiovisual spaces also share volume with mechanical systems, storage and service access, leaving little flexibility for larger hardware. As a result, every rack unit must deliver maximum usable power without increasing rack height, weight or cooling requirements. Amplifiers that require multiple rack spaces to achieve higher output can quickly exceed available capacity, forcing additional racks or compromises elsewhere in the system. For AHT, selecting a platform that delivered high power density in a consistent 1U form factor allowed system designs to meet performance targets while staying within the physical and regulatory limits imposed by yacht construction.

“What we like about Powersoft is that we can get the wattage we need in a 1U configuration,” Al Reinhard, principal for AHT Marine. “Space is always a major consideration on yachts. With this platform, we can do more with less rack space.”

Using 1U amplifiers instead of larger multi-channel 2U models cuts rack space needs in half. On a recent yacht project, AHT specified approximately 64 amplifiers. If those units had required 2U each, the system would have consumed an additional rack and a half of space, which was space the vessel simply did not have.

The ability to select different power levels within the same physical format was equally important. With output options ranging from roughly 1,000 watts to 8,000 watts per unit, AHT Marine can match amplifier power to specific loudspeaker requirements without changing chassis size or rack layout.

Powersoft’s Unica amplifier platform proved to be a strong fit for these constraints. With rack space fixed early in the build process and little opportunity for expansion, AHT Marine needed an amplifier that delivered high output without increasing rack height, heat load or system complexity. Unica addressed those constraints by combining high-channel-count amplification, onboard DSP and network connectivity in a 1RU chassis, allowing AHT to consolidate processing and amplification while keeping rack density under control.

Each Unica model integrates advanced DSP functionality, allowing filtering, limiting, time alignment and system protection to be handled directly at the amplifier level. The approach simplified signal flow and reduced potential failure points, a priority in marine environments where access to equipment can be limited once a vessel is underway. As Reinhard noted, “All of it is AES67, so it blends perfectly with our existing systems. We use audio over IP across our projects, and compatibility is not optional.”

The network compatibility strengthened Unica’s fit within AHT Marine’s broader system architecture, where audio distribution must coexist with control, monitoring and IT systems on shared infrastructure. At the same time, Unica’s third-generation architecture supports a high signal-to-noise ratio, allowing AHT to maintain consistent audio quality across owner suites, guest areas, outdoor decks and crew spaces, despite their differing acoustic demands.

Powersoft Unica’s efficiency played an equally important role in the decision. Unica’s redesigned output stage and power supply minimize energy loss as heat, reducing electrical demand and easing thermal stress in tightly packed racks where airflow is often restricted by yacht design. “They’re extremely efficient in terms of power consumption,” Reinhard explained. “That’s critical on a yacht. The device’s weight is another major consideration because anything excessively heavy can push a yacht into a different classification, which has real regulatory and cost implications.” By lowering both power consumption and heat output, AHT Marine was able to meet performance requirements without introducing additional cooling demands or regulatory risk.

The reliability remained a non-negotiable factor. Yacht owners and charter clients expect uninterrupted performance, particularly when vessels are leased for weeks at a time at premium rates. “When an owner is on board, everything has to work,” said Reinhard. “If audio fails during a charter, that becomes a serious issue for the owner, the captain and the engineer.” AHT Marine’s previous experience with other manufacturers highlighted the consequences of equipment failure in these environments, while its ongoing deployments of Unica have reinforced confidence in long-term system stability.

Support responsiveness further influenced the decision to standardize. AHT views key manufacturers as partners in its projects, particularly when custom requirements arise. In one instance, Unica amplifiers needed to be flush-mounted in racks that differed from standard configurations. Powersoft engineered and delivered a custom mounting solution in a short timeframe, allowing installation to proceed without redesigning the rack layout. “That level of responsiveness matters when you’re working within tight construction schedules and limited space,” the team said.

After roughly a year of active deployment across multiple yacht projects, AHT Marine has continued to expand its use of Unica amplification. The combination of compact form factor, scalable power options, onboard DSP, network compatibility and manufacturer support has led AHT Marine to standardize the platform across its marine portfolio.

“We’re very loyal once we find something that works,” said Reinhard. “Our clients are at the upper echelon, and they don’t have time for problems. Working with companies that understand our business and our constraints is the most important part of selecting a partner.”

For AHT Marine, Unica has become a valuable foundation for delivering consistent, reliable audio performance across some of the most demanding yacht installations in the world.

  • Powersoft Ottocanali Delivers Rock Solid Performance at the National Museum of African American Music

Powersoft Ottocanali Delivers Rock Solid Performance at the National Museum of African American Music

The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM), located in the heart of downtown Nashville, is the only museum dedicated to preserving and celebrating the legacies of African American music across every genre, from spirituals and gospel to jazz, blues, hip-hop and R&B. Since its opening in 2021, the museum has become a cultural landmark, drawing visitors from across the country and around the world. The NMAAM’s mission is brought to life through exhibitions, artifacts and immersive audiovisual experiences that connect visitors emotionally and sonically to the music itself.

A centerpiece of NMAAM is the orientation theater, a hybrid space that serves as both an introduction point for visitors and a venue for live performances. With a large stage and a curved 32-foot-wide screen that expands to nearly 60 feet during presentations, the theater presented unique acoustic and engineering challenges. The screen design required a sound system that was both extremely shallow, to fit within the limited depth behind the screen, and mobile, so that speakers could move with the screen’s side panels and expand the audio field in sync with the visuals.

“We had a clear goal we were trying to achieve,” said Tim Creed, CTS-D, president of CED, Inc. “The theater needed an audio system that could keep pace with the expanding screen, delivering a seamless, immersive experience for visitors. The challenge was finding speakers shallow enough for the space and light enough to mount on the moving panels, without compromising sound quality.”

To address these challenges, Creed turned to Innovox, a trusted partner recognized for its expertise in engineering custom solutions. Innovox provided a complete system design, including matched speakers, EQs and amplification. CED Inc. performed rigorous testing of the system, with the design exceeding every requirement, delivering the performance and flexibility needed for the space.

The final solution combined subwoofers positioned in the center, high-performance speakers integrated into the large central screen, additional lightweight speakers mounted on the traveling side panels and dedicated center channels. To power the entire system, Innovox recommended Powersoft’s Ottocanali Series, a choice that proved vital to the installation’s success.

The Ottocanali is an 8-channel, Class D power amplification platform capable of supplying up to 12,000 W of power at 4 ohms. Designed for multi-zone applications in medium- to large-scale installs, the Ottocanali Series supports any combination of Lo-Z or Hi-Z output connections and includes universal switch-mode power supplies with PFC. All amplifier platforms in the Ottocanali Series feature switchable main/aux signal inputs per channel, mono-bridgeable channel pairs, as well as a wide range of functions, including system control, alarms, GPI/O, and monitoring. The Ottocanali Series includes optional DSP+D versions outfitted with Dante™ inputs, enabling Ottocanali DSP+D amplifier platforms to seamlessly integrate within networking environments and give users a wide range of monitoring and sound-shaping capabilities.

For NMAAM’s orientation theater, the flexibility of the Ottocanali Series was essential. The system required amplifiers that could seamlessly handle a hybrid design of subwoofers, main channels and mobile side-panel speakers within a single venue. With its eight independent channels and DSP+D capabilities, the Ottocanali Series provided the control, tuning and efficiency necessary to achieve that balance.

The amplifiers feature Powersoft’s patented Smart Rail Management (SRM) technology, which recycles reactive energy from the loudspeakers. SRM reduces overall power consumption and heat dissipation, ensuring that the amplifiers run efficiently while lowering long-term operating costs, a benefit particularly important for a venue operating at the scale of NMAAM.

“I trusted Innovox’s recommendation on Powersoft,” Creed explained. “The Ottocanali Series gave us exactly what we needed – flexibility, reliability and world-class sound quality. The Ottocanali Series fits perfectly into the system and has proven to be an excellent choice.”

While the choice of equipment was crucial, the installation itself presented its own challenges, particularly in managing the cables for the retractable side panels. The cables had to extend and retract repeatedly without strain or signal degradation. With careful engineering, the team succeeded, and the system performed exactly as intended.

The result was an immersive audio experience that expanded dynamically with the visuals, creating a seamless sense of scale for visitors. According to Creed, the effect was striking. He said, “The speakers in the moving side panels widened the sound field in perfect sync with the visuals. It gave visitors exactly the kind of immersive experience we envisioned.”

The system’s performance has even been favorably compared to the theater’s separate high-end live system used for concerts and special events. According to the facility’s owner, the Innovox and Powersoft system actually sounds superior. “That was a real point of pride,” Creed noted. “Our Ottocanali-driven system, designed for orientation films and multimedia, was judged to outperform a world-class live performance rig. That speaks volumes about the precision and quality of Innovox and Powersoft.”

Since its installation, the system has operated flawlessly. Despite the mechanical complexity of the moving panels, the audio has never been a point of failure. “Powersoft has absolutely met our expectations,” said Creed. “We love working with partners who stand behind their products, just as we do. Despite the system’s moving parts, which could easily lead to issues over time, we’ve had zero problems with the audio itself.”

For Creed, the project highlighted the value of collaboration with suppliers who share a passion for excellence. “We’re a small, boutique, high-end company,” he explained. “We value working with equally passionate manufacturers. Innovox and Powersoft were exactly that.”
