    7 Ways to Rock Return to Work

    The last few years have been filled with stress and uncertainty. It’s hard to imagine that things will ever go back to normal. Regardless, at some point, we’re going to be making a return to office spaces.

    It’s unclear what exactly this will look like as more employees look to continue working remotely in one way or another. Hybrid work may very well be the future, but that will still require employees to be in the office at least part-time.

    Even though we don’t know exactly when offices will be up and running again, it’s a good idea to start planning your office return strategy. Here are seven great ways to rock your return to work.

    Implement Health and Safety Measures

    Many employees, especially those with compromised immune systems or other preexisting conditions, may be particularly nervous about returning to work.

    To address these safety concerns, it’s important to put measures in place to reduce the spread of infection. OSHA’s return-to-work manual can help employers plan for a safe reopening. The guidelines suggest that employers:

    • Be willing to adjust plans based on current local outbreak levels
    • Provide hand-washing supplies to all employees and guests and encourage frequent and proper hand-washing
    • Provide hand sanitizer for employees and guests
    • Enhance the office’s cleaning and disinfecting policies for high-traffic spaces
    • Monitor business occupancy to accommodate proper social distancing
    • Require employees to monitor themselves for COVID-19 symptoms and provide equipment like thermometers when necessary
    • Establish a protocol for managing and tracking sick employees, including notifying employees who may have been exposed as soon as possible

    Follow CDC guidelines when an exposed or formerly ill employee returns to work.

    Reconsider Sick Policies

    Before bringing employees back into the office, companies should consider adjusting their sick leave policies to allow employees to regain their health faster and avoid situations in which employees can get sick at work in the first place.

    The average employee in the US gets 7 sick days a year. A COVID-positive employee could use those 7 days up fast. Businesses should consider offering employees more sick days or even offering sick days specifically for use in case of a COVID infection.

    Hybrid employees could also be given flexibility in their telework schedules. This would be an excellent option for employees who have been exposed but aren’t yet showing symptoms. Allowing them to work from home in such events will reduce the spread of COVID in the office.

    Hoteling Spaces

    Office hoteling is the concept of having unassigned workspaces that employees can reserve when they’re in the office, rather than each employee having their own desk or cubicle.

    This concept has benefits for both the company and the employee. Businesses can choose locations with a smaller footprint by reducing the number of workspaces. This also gives them flexibility on location. On the other hand, employees can choose whichever workstation is best for them when they’re in the office.

    Office hoteling creates flexibility in the office space. Just be sure to implement appropriate sanitization protocols for the workspaces between uses.

    Offer Noise Reduction

    For many remote employees, returning to the office may be overwhelming. The home office doesn’t usually have constantly-ringing desk phones or colleagues’ voices contributing to a rather distracting ambiance. One study from 2013 showed that a lack of sound privacy was the number one frustration for office employees.

    To help quiet the office and promote focus, companies can try options like:

    • Having dedicated quiet and loud workspaces
    • Feeding in white or brown noise
    • Using soundproofing materials for sound masking

    Bring the Outside Inside

    Adding greenery to the office space is a fantastic way to boost employee morale. One 2014 study found that adding plants to the work environment increased productivity by 15%. Adding indoor plants may also help lower stress.

    Methods for adding greenery into an office space may be as simple as adding more plants here and there. But it can also include setting up a vibrant outdoor space. As a bonus, plants help reduce noise pollution indoors.

    Update Seating and Offer Standing Options

    Doctors have long claimed that sitting for long periods is bad for our health. Jobs that require an employee to sit at their desk for most of the day can lead to health issues such as increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, and unhealthy cholesterol levels.

    Remote employees can customize their desk chairs or even avoid sitting altogether. Many may take short walking breaks to relieve stiffness during the day. Businesses should consider incorporating some of these options into their return-to-work strategies for in-office employees.

    Ensure Effective Communication

    Regardless of the changes or preparations made for a return to the office, communicating openly and effectively with employees is the most important factor. This will ensure that everyone is on the same page.

    A few tips for communicating with employees include:

    • Talking the plan through with your employees before telling the public
    • Ensuring customers and clients are aware of the new changes
    • Explaining how the changes will make the office a safe and healthy space for employees
    • Asking for employee feedback on the back-to-work plans
    • Being flexible with the new changes

As the property management firm’s chosen sound masking contractor, AtlasIED dealer Vibra-Sonic Control custom-designed, engineered, and calibrated speech privacy solutions for a large variety of new offices, boardrooms, and meeting spaces of five vastly different clients. 

    Deep Roots in Sound Masking Make AtlasIED Brookfield’s Go-To Source

    Although the focus of each customer’s business differed—from banking to oil production–they all required the same comprehensive level of sound masking for speech confidentiality and acoustical comfort. Vibra-Sonic didn’t have to dig deep into AtlasIED’s commercial audio portfolio to find a solution that would suit all configurations. “AtlasIED’s M1000 sound masking speakers paired with ASP-MG2240 amplified sound masking controllers were the obvious choice,” says Vibra-Sonic regional manager Paul Kamoh. Together they create a system that’s easily scaled and configured for the specific needs of each client, making AtlasIED the single sound masking source for Brookfield Places’ first tenants. 

    “Plus, we knew through our 20-plus years carrying AtlasIED equipment that the M1000s and ASP-MG2240s would satisfy the strict confidentiality requirements of Brookfield businesses including a law office, healthcare facility, financial institution, as well as meet National Research Council guidelines for optimal speech privacy,” Kamoh continues.

    Scalability and “Set-and-Forget” Software Streamline Massive Deployment

    After analyzing the infrastructure, acoustical characteristics, and sound masking needs of each office space, Vibra-Sonic created a comprehensive blueprint indicating speaker and controller locations to ensure optimal performance. The plan rolled out as Brookfield Place was under construction, allowing the electrical contractors at Western Electric to easily tuck the equipment above the ceiling for a clean, unobtrusive installation. “Speech privacy and employee productivity may be the main reasons to implement sound masking; attractive aesthetics help seal the deal,” Kamoh says. “It’s important for productivity and comfort that employees aren’t distracted by speakers and that the noise generated by the system becomes a natural part of the environment. The small footprint and installation versatility of the AtlasIED M1000s allow us to position and calibrate the speakers so that the sound is diffused and evenly distributed for a peaceful effect, all while masking confidential conversations and minimizing unwanted, distracting ambient noise.”

    As for the configuration and installation of the ASP-MG2240s? “It couldn’t have been any easier,” remarks Kamoh. Amplification, noise generators, and a DSP with control software are built-in, and sound masking levels are preset at the factory, based on real-world conditions. “This helped us maintain a very streamlined workflow despite the enormity of the project,” Kamoh continues. Vibra-Sonic expertly tuned the sound masking systems to customize the levels for each environment. “Once it’s set, we can forget it … until our next customer.” All sound masking settings can be stored on the ASP-MG2240 and a PC for file back-up and recall, giving Vibra-Sonic a head-start on Phase 2 of the Brookfield Place rollout. 

    100 Speakers and 4 Controllers on Each of 40 Floors … and Counting

    A quick calculation by Kamoh puts the AtlasIED sound masking total at roughly 160 ASP-MG2240 controllers and 4,000 M1000 speakers, and, and that’s only the first phase of the build-out. Construction of the 4- year-old Brookfield Place is ongoing, with new tenants routinely added to the building. So far, Vibra-Sonic has equipped most tenants with AtlasIED’s square, black, plenum-rated M1000 speakers for a hidden sound masking solution, adding an occasional black and white, round M1000 speaker in spaces with open ceilings. “When we can’t conceal the speaker above the ceiling, these flush-mounted versions in a color that matches the particular office aesthetic are a great alternative,” Kamoh says. 

    No matter which style of speaker befits the office design best, Kamoh expects most of the newcomers to follow the sound masking lead of the original five tenants. “Brookfield uses sound masking as a selling feature of the property—a value-added amenity akin to the building’s LEED Gold Standard rating and spectacular architecture. Sound masking systems are built into each tenant’s lease, and if anyone needs convincing, Brookfield uses its own office on Floor 12 to demonstrate to prospective clients its acoustical benefits.”

    When the property management team of an entire 56-story commercial building includes sound masking as a selling feature for their spaces, they clearly consider it to be an essential amenity that not only attracts tenants but retains them. “It’s become something that most corporate businesses simply expect,” Kamoh says.     The new active/powered M1000A35 supports an efficient, economical, and self-contained sound masking system

     AtlasIED has announced the availability of the M1000A35, the latest sound masking speaker to join the company’s already extensive line of Sound Masking products. Complementing AtlasIED’s best-selling sound masking speaker, the M1000, the new active/powered M1000A35 supports an efficient, economical, and self-contained sound masking system. 

    The M1000A35 is powered by an internal 5W amplifier and produces 30W output to power additional M1000 passive speakers. The M1000A35 features a non-repeatable pink noise generator and utilizes its proprietary EQ curves to make acoustical room calibrations simple, quick, and accurate. If integration into an existing control system is a requirement, a GPIO control port is incorporated to allow for remote level adjustments. 

    The M1000A35 speaker allows designers to specify fewer power drops for sound masking installations, plus the scalability to accommodate flexible office environments and floor renovations or reconfigurations. Specially designed to be used with the M1000A35 is the optional AtlasIED ATMASKSC. This device facilitates remote 1dB precision level adjustments and prohibits the masking system from being accidentally turned off. The ATMASKSC is well suited to properly support the commissioning of a sound masking system.

    The M1000A35 operates from 100V – 240V and is UL2043 plenum-rated. It is also CE safety-certified, making it a product suitable for global distribution and installation.
