Bondi Icebergs Reimagines Its Club and Function Spaces with a Flexible, Future Ready AV Upgrade

One of Australia’s most iconic venues, Bondi Icebergs, has completed a major multi‑stage renovation of its club and function spaces, relaunching them under a new identity: The Bergs.

Designed to support a broader mix of hospitality, events and live entertainment, the revitalized venue pairs upgraded interiors with a highly flexible audiovisual system—delivered through close collaboration between Showtime Production Services and MadisonAV, and rooted in JBL Professional, Crown and BSS solutions by HARMAN Professional.

Perched above the Pacific Ocean and famed for its ocean pool and dining, The Bergs was conceived as a venue capable of rapid changeovers and parallel programming, often hosting several events with entirely different technical requirements year‑round. The upgrade introduces new bars, expanded dining areas, upgraded amenities and dedicated function rooms, all supported by an AV infrastructure designed to adapt as programming demands evolve.

“On a typical Friday or Saturday, we’re turning over spaces every couple of hours while running multiple functions,” said Cassie O’Brien, General Manager of Bondi Icebergs. “One area might be general trade with sport and background music, another a private function with images streamed to screens, and elsewhere a live band performing. The upgrade allows us to create very different experiences within one venue.”

Showtime Production Services led system integration, working closely with MadisonAV from early specification through to final commissioning. The brief prioritized future‑proofing, operational simplicity and long‑term reliability. “In registered club environments, change is inevitable,” explained Scott Masters, Director at Showtime Production Services. “The AV system needed to be flexible, intuitive for staff, and designed so the venue can expand or adapt without major rework. MadisonAV played a key role in helping us align the right technology to that goal.”

At the core of the installation is a distributed, multi-zone audio architecture built around BSS BLU signal processors, providing centralized control and flexible routing across all zones. This allows staff to isolate or combine spaces as needed, supporting frequent changeovers and parallel programming throughout the venue.

JBL Control Series loudspeakers are deployed throughout the property to match the acoustic requirements of each space. Reception and dining areas feature JBL Control 424 in-ceiling loudspeakers for consistent, low-profile coverage, while JBL Control 25AV surface-mount loudspeakers provide balanced audio across general zones. In higher-energy areas, JBL Control 29AV loudspeakers deliver increased output, supported by a JBL ABS6112B subwoofer used in DJ and live performance settings to reinforce low-frequency response.

Amplification is provided by a combination of Crown CDi and CSA Series amplifiers, ensuring reliable power delivery and scalable performance across the multi-zone system. Local audio inputs are routed through the BSS BLU-100 signal processor, allowing simple connections for background music, DJ setups or live sources without adding operational complexity.

“Modern hospitality venues need systems that deliver consistent sound quality across multiple zones while remaining easy to operate and robust enough for constant use,” said Nick Screen, VP & GM of HARMAN Professional Solutions, APAC. “The JBL, Crown and BSS ecosystem used at Bondi Icebergs supports that balance, allowing venues to shift seamlessly between use cases without compromising the guest experience.”

With its renewed spaces and flexible AV infrastructure, The Bergs is positioned as a highly adaptable hospitality and events venue, capable of hosting multiple concurrent experiences with ease. The project demonstrates how thoughtful system design—supported by collaboration between integrator, distributor and manufacturer—can unlock long‑term operational value for modern venues.

  • Mount Faber Peak Ballroom Pairs Panoramic Views with Flexible Event Technology

Mount Faber Peak Ballroom Pairs Panoramic Views with Flexible Event Technology

Mount Faber Leisure Group has transformed the Mount Faber Peak Ballroom into a flexible, technology-driven event venue with a new Martin Professional Lighting and JBL Professional audio system specified and designed AVL Acoustic Systems Pte Ltd (AVLAS) and supplied by Electronics & Engineering Pte Ltd. This upgrade enables one of Singapore’s most recognizable event destinations to support a broader range of premium events while preserving the venue’s panoramic views and architectural character.

Located atop Mount Faber, one of Singapore’s highest hills, Mount Faber Peak is a landmark destination overlooking the city skyline, Sentosa Island and the harbor. The ballroom has become a sought-after venue for weddings, gala dinners, corporate functions and private events, where floor-to-ceiling windows and elevated views serve as the backdrop for celebrations. As client expectations evolved, Mount Faber Leisure Group sought to modernize the space with integrated lighting and audio systems capable of transforming the ballroom’s atmosphere to suit different event formats without compromising its clean architectural aesthetic.

“Our vision was to create a ballroom that could transform as quickly as the events we host. Where light, sound and space move together to create emotion,” said Marc Brandon Hor, Project Consultant, AVLAS.

The existing ballroom relied on fixed lighting and aging truss-mounted fixtures that limited creative flexibility and resulted in a similar visual presentation for every event. Because the renovation took place within a completed venue operating on a busy event schedule, the installation team also needed to work around concealed infrastructure, ceiling load restrictions and a compressed two-week installation window.

“Transforming a completed ballroom meant navigating hidden infrastructure, load restrictions and tight schedules,” Marc said. “We needed technology that disappeared into the design yet delivered a truly flexible experience for every event.”

To achieve that goal, AVLAS specified eight Martin Professional ERA 150 Wash fixtures and eight Martin Professional ELP PAR fixtures for their high output, color flexibility, and discreet design. Finished in white to blend into the ballroom’s ceiling, the fixtures provide programmable lighting capable of transitioning

from subtle ambient illumination for wedding receptions to vibrant looks for product launches, entertainment and gala events while remaining visually unobtrusive when not in use.

The audio system was designed around 18 JBL Professional Control 47C/T ceiling loudspeakers and six JBL Professional Control 19CST ceiling subwoofers, delivering even coverage throughout the ballroom while preserving the venue’s clean interior design. The integrated system supports speeches, background music, live entertainment and multimedia presentations with smooth, even sound quality across the entire space.

With only two weeks allocated for the retrofit, close coordination between AVLAS, Electronics & Engineering and HARMAN Professional proved critical to completing the project on schedule. HARMAN Professional Solutions’ ability to provide rapid delivery and responsive technical support played a decisive role in the project’s success.

“HARMAN’s dedication to speed and quality support transforms them from a supplier into a true project partner,” Marc said. “Their responsiveness helped us overcome every logistical and technical challenge within the tight time frame.”

“Today’s hospitality venues need technology that enhances the guest experience while remaining flexible enough to support many different event types,” said Nick Screen, VP & GM, HARMAN Professional Solutions, APAC. “The integration of Martin Professional lighting and JBL Professional audio at Mount Faber Peak Ballroom gives the venue the ability to create distinctive environments for every event while maintaining the elegance and character that have made it one of Singapore’s premier event destinations.”

The completed installation gives Mount Faber Peak Ballroom the flexibility to transition seamlessly between weddings, corporate functions, gala dinners and private celebrations, allowing lighting and audio to become part of the guest experience rather than simply supporting it. By combining Martin Professional lighting with JBL Professional audio, AVLAS has created an integrated solution that complements one of Singapore’s most iconic event venues while positioning it to meet the evolving expectations of premium hospitality and event clients.

  • Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson Rock U.S. Tour with JBL VTX System and Crown Amplifiers

Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson Rock U.S. Tour with JBL VTX System and Crown Amplifiers

The unmistakable energy of legendary rock group Heart’s live performances demands a sound system that delivers both power and musicality. The first person who knows that is veteran front-of-house engineer Gary Hartung, who’s helped deliver the band’s signature sound across arenas, sheds and theaters for several tours. After first specifying JBL Professional’s VTX V25 loudspeaker system for Heart’s 2019 tour, Hartung continues to rely on it today for the band’s 2024-2026 tour, citing years of consistent results and audience acclaim.

Hartung, who has worked with Heart and vocalist Ann Wilson for more than a decade, first mixed on the JBL VTX system during a run of outdoor venues in 2019. “We had phenomenal success with that PA,” said Hartung. “With the VTX system, we were having great shows one after another so I knew I had made the right choice.”

When Heart reunited for their latest tour in 2024, Hartung returned to the same JBL Professional system that helped define his live mix. The rig, provided by Sound Image, features VTX V25-II-CS mains, B28 subwoofers and VTX A8 front fills, powered by Crown I-Tech amplifiers. Hartung’s preference for JBL Professional stems from what he calls its musical smoothness and dynamic balance. “The VTX has a warm, natural character,” he said. “It’s not overly aggressive, it’s musical. That matters when you’re mixing a show that goes from hard rock to ballads. The system stays even and consistent no matter the dynamics.”

Heart’s current production is a full-scale rock show built around a dense wall of guitars and powerful vocals from Ann and Nancy Wilson. Hartung emphasized that the JBL VTX system handles that range without harshness. This proved especially important during high-pressure shows such as Heart’s recent stop at Pechanga Arena in San Diego, a notoriously challenging acoustic environment. “It was one of those nights where everything came together – the band, the mix, the room,” Hartung recalled. “The feedback from industry friends and venue staff were unanimously positive.”

With Nancy and Ann Wilson still performing at full power, the Heart tour continues to draw thousands of fans across North America. By pairing rock’s enduring energy with the precision and musicality of JBL’s VTX system, the production delivers the clarity, coverage and impact needed to make each night on the tour unforgettable.

  • Three-Time Emmy Award-Winning Sound Mixer Stephen Tibbo Selects JBL Professional for Dolby Atmos Studio

Three-Time Emmy Award-Winning Sound Mixer Stephen Tibbo Selects JBL Professional for Dolby Atmos Studio

Three-time Emmy Award-winning sound mixer Stephen Tibbo has built a new Dolby Atmos® mix room outfitted with JBL Professional 7 Series monitors, BSS, and Crown DCi amplifiers. Designed by Carl Yanchar and managed by Danny Fasold, the new space was built to deliver the precision and consistency required for film and television post-production.

Tibbo, best known for his work on acclaimed series including Modern Family and Nobody Wants This, began his career in production sound before moving into post-production and opening his own studio in Los Angeles. As demand for Atmos projects grew, Tibbo recognized the need to expand beyond his original space, which was limited by size. With design guidance from Yanchar and project management from Danny Fasold, Tibbo’s vision for a professional Atmos studio came to life after two years of planning, permitting and construction.

The 9.1.4 system includes JBL 708i loudspeakers for the front and surround channels, 705i loudspeakers for the height channels, and dual JBL Cinema Subwoofers. “The JBL 7 Series monitors translate really well and offer a ton of value for their cost and size,” Tibbo said. “I had mixed on them a lot at other studios, so when Danny suggested we think about them, it was an easy decision.” Crown DCi amplifiers provide system power and tuning, while audio is routed via an Avid MTRX interface with Dante integration through BSS BLU-DAN.

Fasold emphasized that designing a Dolby-certified room required careful planning and collaboration.

“Stephen’s experience on the JBL 7 Series monitors really drove this decision,” Fasold said. “They’re very commonly used in post-production studios, and they work extremely well in Atmos environments. Combined with the Crown DCi amps, we were able to time-align and tune the system to meet Dolby’s exacting standards. The end result is a room that delivers power, accuracy and consistency.”

For ADR work, Tibbo relies on AKG K371 headphones, which he praised for their comfort, isolation, and durability. “The AKGs are quiet and reliable,” Tibbo said. “When actors move during ADR, you don’t hear creaks or noise leaking through. They let us focus completely on performance.”

The project faced challenges typical of high-end builds in Los Angeles, including an extensive permitting process and budget constraints. Still, through clear communication and a shared commitment to excellence, Tibbo, Yanchar, and Fasold ensured the studio was delivered to spec and on schedule.

Since completion, the room has been busy with feature film and episodic work, further cementing Tibbo’s reputation as one of Hollywood’s most versatile sound professionals. By integrating JBL, Crown, BSS, and AKG solutions, Tibbo has created a space that supports both technical excellence and artistic expression, ensuring every project benefits from a clear, precise audio experience.
