    Connecting with customers in new ways
    Emerson Automation Solutions is a leading provider of products and solutions for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications. As a manufacturer of flow-metering systems, Emerson conducts calibration and testing of these devices prior to shipping from its facility in Ede, central Netherlands to customers worldwide.

    Meter calibration and inspection has traditionally been performed with the customer physically present to observe and validate the process. However, due to the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, Emerson has developed a remote-inspection service that allows customers around the world to see the product being calibrated in real time.

    Showing every detail of the inspection process with 4K clarity
    The innovative solution introduced by Emerson makes use of Sony SRG Series remote PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) cameras, allowing flow-meter customers to observe details of the calibration process and give approval from their own location.

    Live video streams from the cameras are monitored by Emerson personnel, who can use a touch-screen controller to zoom in as needed to see close-up details with razor-sharp clarity. Images are then streamed to customers around the world via live videoconferencing link, with an Emerson representative giving an explanation of the calibration process.

    The remote solution has helped Emerson overcome the challenges of product inspection during the coronavirus crisis. As well as reducing the need for face-to-face contact, it has also saved hours of travel time and associated costs for its customers.

    Rethinking traditional education

    Based in Madrid, Comillas Pontifical University offers teaching in 120 subjects to more than 15,000 students.

    The global coronavirus pandemic demanded a rethink of traditional lecture-based teaching, explains Luis Francisco Blanco, CIO of Comillas Pontifical University: “Following the COVID 19 crisis and seeing that we would need to continue teaching students from home, we started to plan possible future scenarios back in May. We got in touch with various providers who could offer solutions to meet our needs. When we saw the possibilities offered by Sony we didn’t think twice.”

    While some classes were already being streamed online, the sudden change in circumstances meant that all face-to-face learning had to become virtual. To offer the same quality of learning experience for students on campus and for those participating from home, the university embarked on a major upgrade of its AV systems.

    228 classrooms equipped for hybrid teaching

    A primary requirement was cameras and microphones that offered the closest experience possible to being physically present in class. “We wanted cameras with a wide zoom range that allowed a view of the entire class, as well as more focused shots with easy preset adjustments using the remote control,” says Luis. “We wanted it to be simple for lecturers, while also making the student experience as similar as possible to being in the classroom.”

    Comillas University thus decided to equip its 228 classrooms with Sony SRG remote cameras and MAS-A100 Beamforming Microphones, ready for “bimodal” teaching.

    Capturing crisp Full HD images, the SRG cameras allow lecturers to easily adjust zoom and other settings via a remote control. Ceiling-mounted MAS-A100 Beamforming Microphones capture the voices of lecturers and students in the room without requiring direct physical contact, avoiding potential infection risks. The microphones also feature powerful digital signal processing (DSP) with unique algorithms that extract clear speech while suppressing unwanted feedback and noise.

    A consistent learning experience, face-to-face or virtually

    Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2025, held in Barcelona, Spain, recently concluded. ISE brings corporate giants and emerging stars together across technology categories, including audio, broadcast, lighting, and communication. It also showcased commercial display systems that competed for attendees’ attention with a wider variety of sizes, enhanced performance, and a more appealing cost of ownership.

     

    Electronic Paper
    Electronic paper (e-paper) is an eye-friendly reflective display technology that strives to mimic the visual qualities of a printed page, including excellent readability outdoors or in brightly lit environments. The pixel technology of an e-paper display can require several seconds to update, making it better suited for static imagery – think e-reader devices like the Amazon Kindle or digital signage applications. However, once an e-paper display establishes an image, little to no additional power is required to maintain its appearance. These highly efficient display devices can be front-lit for increased readability in darkened environments, and some smaller e-paper screens offer up to 300 PPI resolution.

    One challenge for e-paper display designs has been increasing screen size beyond handheld devices or something akin to a smaller computer monitor. On display (pun intended) at ISE 2025 was the largest e-paper display yet offered by E Ink, which pioneered many of the most popular e-paper technologies. The 75-inch display is part of the company’s Kaleido 3 series and was demonstrated in prototype products on the show floor at several company booths, including Agile Display Solutions, DynaScan, LG Electronics, and Samsung Electronics.

    The extreme energy efficiency of e-paper displays had me excited to see Agile Display Solutions earn some ISE best-of-show nods for its upcoming 32-inch Forever Display (EPD32-FD) featuring E Ink’s Spectra 6 color display module. The Forever Display is designed with a solar panel array along the top edge of its aluminum frame, allowing it to recharge its lithium-ion battery using standard store lighting. Equipped with an ARM processor, 16GB of storage, and Wi-Fi connectivity, the EPD32-FD can be set up quickly without cables or additional maintenance. Forever Display owners can adjust content programming and apply updates through a dedicated mobile app (available on iOS and Android) or a cloud service website.

    Direct View LED
    Direct-view LED (DVLED) displays dominate the commercial display industry with their impressive brightness, vibrant colors, and near-perfect picture contrast. Each DVLED display consists of smaller modules that house arrays of individual LEDs. These modules simplify installation and maintenance, offering large-format options that can be scaled to nearly any size while maintaining durability for indoor and outdoor applications.

    Samsung’s ISE 2025 booth attracted crowds who admired a large-scale demonstration of the company’s The Wall micro-LED display technology. Visitors gazed at a “media facade” that combined a 462-inch screen configuration of The Wall (IWC series) with smoke machines and projectors, extending the presentation beyond the pixels and into the surrounding floor space. Another demonstration of The Wall at the booth showed it operating as the centerpiece of a command and control room. These Samsung DVLED products featured a 1.26mm pixel pitch, 1000 nits of brightness, and 95% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. Additional pixel pitch options for The Wall IWC series include 0.8mm and 1.6mm spacing options.

    The Philips booth at ISE showcased the company’s latest additions to its L-Line series of DVLED display modules, introducing a new outdoor signage line named Urban LED. The 7000, 6000, and 5000 series modules have IP66/65 (front/rear) ratings and can operate in temperature ranges from -30 to 50°C. These modules provide various size and pixel performance options for creating vibrant outdoor signage, featuring impressive LED lifetime specifications of 100,000 hours to half brightness.

    The Urban LED 6000 series boasts an impressive 10000 nits of peak brightness, ensuring its images remain well-defined even in direct sunlight. Available cabinet sizes include 1200x1200mm, 800x1200mm, and 800x900mm panels, with pixel pitch options of 6.67mm, 8.33mm, and 10.0mm – optimized for viewing distances from 10 to 30 meters. With a display refresh rate of 7680Hz, the 6000 series provides artifact-free imagery when captured by the latest professional broadcast cameras – an essential feature for digital signage in sports arenas or environments that regularly capture digital video. With similar pixel pitch options and peak brightness as the 6000 series, the Urban LED 5000 series will offer additional panel size options of 1600x900mm and 2000x900mm.

    The Urban LED 7000 series offers a peak brightness of up to 6000 nits and finer pixel pitch options of 2.9mm, 3.9mm, and 4.8mm, making for more seamless viewing at closer distances than the 5000 or 6000 series. The cabinet size options for the 7000 series include 500x500mm and 500x1000mm, which are also better suited for space-constrained applications.

    Hybrid Projection
    Laser phosphor light engines for video projectors are not a new concept. The first laser projector utilized a two-color laser system to excite phosphor material, creating RGB (red, green, and blue) for a full-color image. The projection specialists at Christie Digital introduced a new product at ISE 2025, tailored for professional installations that demand efficient and dependable bright imagery with broad video format support. The Christie Sapphire 4K40-RGBH showcases the company’s first high-bright design, which integrates a “…hybrid RGB pure laser and laser phosphor…” into the light engine. This engine can achieve the DCI-P3 color gamut at up to a claimed 36400 ANSI lumens (depending on the lens option). For operation at 100% brightness, Sapphire’s self-contained liquid cooling system facilitates a 25000-hour to half-brightness rating with its RGB laser light source and 20000 hours for the laser phosphor light source.

    Sapphire’s dust-sealed 3-chip DLP (1.38-inch DMDs) pixel engine delivers 4096 x 2160 resolution and supports all active and passive 3D formats. The projector is compatible with every screen type, including rear projection and gain-enhancing designs, and its 202.8-pound (92kg) chassis can be mounted and operated in any desired orientation. The Sapphire’s extensive video connection options include DisplayPort, HDMI, and Quad 12G-SDI. Sapphire’s video output includes 4K at 60Hz imaging, and high frame rate options are available for up to 4K120 or 2K480.

    With its dual laser phosphor system, Sapphire’s hybrid light engine enables efficient light output at a lower price than generating the same amount of light using RGB lasers alone. The projector’s phosphor illumination can also be blended with the laser output to minimize common artifacts like laser speckle. While Christie’s RGB laser-only projector designs can achieve color gamut coverage approaching the all-encompassing BT.2020 standard, Sapphire’s solid coverage of DCI-P3 makes it well-suited for accurately representing most video content.

    ISE 2025 showcased today’s visually stunning display technologies and their capacity to transform public spaces and business environments with customized messaging, data visualization, and artistic flair.     The Portland Trail Blazers are enhancing the fan experience at Moda Center with major videoboard upgrades set to debut ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season. The project is in conjunction with a new partnership with ANC, a dynamic, independent sports entertainment agency serving as the technology integration partner. Designed in collaboration with long-time technology consultant Anthony James Partners (AJP), the project will transform in-game visuals and statistical displays across the arena.

    The highlight of the project is the transformation of the iconic HustleBoards and StatCentral displays – an innovative feature that set Moda Center apart when it opened in 1994 – will be upgraded to dynamic LED displays totaling 7,520 square feet of screen space, more than one and a half times the square footage of an NBA court. The new screens, alongside ANC’s LiveSync venue control software, will allow for more real-time in-depth stat displays, video displays featuring player personality videos, and in-game entertainment.

    The upgrade features prominent videoboards in each corner with a ribbon board display between the two corners at each end. Each corner board will measure 24’ x 50’ and feature over a million pixels, with the ribbon screen also boasting a million pixels. Additionally, rear-facing LED screens will be added to the back of the new videoboards to ensure fans throughout the arena have clear views of game content.

    The Moda Center’s center-hung scoreboard will be enhanced, increasing in size by 56% to 2,092 square feet of seamless LED display with more than 13.5 million pixels. The updated design features continuous screens from corner to corner and new underbelly displays will enhance visibility for courtside and lower bowl fans.

    Overview

    Lincoln Park Zoo, a historic institution in Chicago, Illinois, founded in 1868, is dedicated to preserving wildlife and enhancing the visitor experience. To modernize its guest communications and provide more dynamic wayfinding solutions, the zoo partnered with Peerless-AV® to implement an innovative digital signage solution that optimizes the visitor experience while integrating seamlessly into the zoo’s unique environment.

    The project, launched in Summer 2023 and completed by August 2024, included the installation of outdoor kiosks and indoor display mounts, designed to deliver high-quality, flexible content across the zoo’s high-traffic areas.

    The Challenge

    As a long-standing cultural and educational landmark, Lincoln Park Zoo faced a challenge common among historic sites: how to modernize infrastructure without sacrificing the integrity of the location or overwhelming the natural environment. The zoo had relied on traditional, static signage for wayfinding, events, and educational content, but as the guest experience continued to evolve, the need for a more adaptable, engaging, and informative digital solution became clear.

    Additionally, given Chicago’s extreme weather conditions—ranging from frigid winters to humid summers—the zoo required a signage solution that was not only adaptable but also durable enough to withstand these environmental challenges.

    The zoo applied for a grant to enhance the guest experience, including funding the installation of digital signage technology that would optimize the communication of venue and programming information across the zoo via digital signage.

    The Solution

    Upon receiving the grant, Peerless-AV was selected as the manufacturer and integrator for this digital transformation project due to its ability to deliver high-performance, weather-resistant outdoor digital signage solutions and its strong existing relationship with the zoo. The outdoor kiosks and displays used in this installation are designed with exceptional durability and brightness, which allows for optimal visibility in all lighting conditions, whether it’s a bright summer day or a cloudy winter afternoon. Working closely with Lincoln Park Zoo and the team at CDW, Peerless-AV provided a comprehensive range of solutions to address the zoo’s needs.

    Installation teams designed a plan to implement digital solutions at key locations throughout the zoo, including entrances, high-traffic pathways, and near the zoo gates to maximize visibility and engagement. One of the challenges was ensuring the installation did not disrupt the natural lighting patterns of animal enclosures to avoid impacting the well-being of the animals, while also optimizing communication for guests.

    Lincoln Park Zoo chose Peerless-AV because of its superior display quality, with bright and clear images. Another critical factor in choosing Peerless-AV was the company’s strong customer support. Peerless-AV worked hand-in-hand with the zoo’s project managers, providing technical assistance, engineering expertise, and on-site support during installation. Their collaborative approach and problem-solving skills were especially valuable in overcoming site-specific challenges like the placement of the displays in busy and environmentally sensitive areas.

    The Installation

    Installation took place in Summer 2024. The zoo’s IT team was also involved in the planning, ensuring the existing Wi-Fi infrastructure was robust enough to support the content management system (CMS). Peerless-AV worked with the zoo to ensure the system was easy to update remotely, facilitating quicker adjustments to content, event promotions, and other important messaging.

    The indoor Searle Visitor Center installation included:
