    The International African American Museum Uses Sony’s Technology to Immerse Visitors in Untold Stories of the African Diaspora

    The International African American Museum (IAAM), which recently opened its doors, honors the difficult and often untold stories of the African American journey.  It is located in Charleston, South Carolina, on Gadsden’s Wharf, one of America’s most sacred international slave trading ports.  The museum uses technology, including Sony’s, to combine storytelling and history while providing heightened engagement, communication and education.

    With support from Sony’s Global Social Justice Fund — which champions social justice and anti-racist initiatives and fosters diversity, equity and inclusion around the world — the company’s top-of-the-line technologies, such as Crystal LED direct view displays, professional 4K HDR BRAVIA displays, 4K SXRD and 1080p laser projectors and professional wireless audio and mics were implemented to help the IAAM’s visitors engage with history and bring artifacts to life.  The technology also serves to expand upon the stories introduced in the museum, which are intended to help heal and facilitate a larger dialogue about our cultures and pasts.

    The IAAM deliberately designed and programmed an interactive, multi-platform experience for today’s digital natives, who have a high standard for technology and a desire to connect with stories in multi-faceted, multi-sensory ways – inside and outside the facility.  The museum sought technology that would amplify the experiences of the African American journey in a manner that would deepen the narrative and provide added levels of connection, immersion and reality.

    Dr. Tonya M. Matthews, President and Chief Executive Officer of IAAM says, “Every good museum will focus on the stories and the storytelling.  I think for an African American History Museum in particular, there’s added weight and added excitement when African Americans get to tell their own story because for so long that wasn’t what we saw in museums.  I’m very excited about the way that the museum is using technology to activate and to enhance these stories.  It’s an integral part of who the IAAM is.”

    As Malika Pryor, Chief Learning and Engagement Officer, explains it, “We are a museum that has been designed to share and we’ve embraced the idea of curating beyond our walls.  As a new museum, we’ve leaned into technology as a way to really communicate – to deepen or to broaden the story in a way that makes it feel much more real.”

    Technology is a focal point of the IAAM visitor experience.  Pryor notes, “When someone’s walking into the exhibition space for the first time, they come into contact with the Transatlantic Experience.  I refer to that as this grounding moment for the visitor because what they’re going to see in these eight screens before them is this immersive visual and sonic experience that gives them a really firm grasp of what it is that they’re going to see as they’re moving through the other exhibitions and installations.”

    The eight massive 6 foot wide by 7 foot tall screens that welcome visitors to the museum are Sony’s Crystal LED displays, which incorporate beneficial features for a museum, including high brightness, a wide viewing angle and anti-reflection panels.  The displays feature rotating content including a mix of powerful historical and modern imagery and photography that highlights and juxtaposes the African and African American experience.

    Dr. Matthews elaborated, saying “When you first walk in the doors, you have this wonderful sense of being surrounded by all these still and moving visual images and music as these eight panels serve as a guiding hallway in our Transatlantic Experiences gallery.  Then you flow into the Atlantic World’s Gallery which I can assure you has one of the biggest screens you have ever seen inside of a museum, which allows us to immerse folks in visuals and sounds.  This is one of my favorite galleries because it deliberately mixes up artifacts and stories from across the African diaspora.”

    In the Atlantic Worlds Gallery, Sony’s massive 32 foot by 7 foot Crystal LED with 7,680 x 1,620 resolution serves as the centerpiece of the space.  It overlooks an exceptional view of the Atlantic Ocean and Gadsden’ Wharf, the actual port of entry for slaves, helping to reclaim the location’s complex associations and turn it into a place of empowerment, education, conversation and understanding.  As Dr. Matthews explains, “That power of place comes with power of activation.”

    Bobby Teachey II, Project Manager, who worked with the Solomon Group to install and set up the AV equipment, inclusive of the enormous Crystal LED displays, describes their impact.  “It’s amazing technology.  When you look really closely at the modular cabinets, there’s actually even smaller LED modules inside of it.  It was amazing to see it all come together and watch content presented on the displays.  The scale of the screen in the Atlantic World’s Gallery and the definition of the graphics will connect people in a different way.  And the vibrant colors and details such as sweat coming off of somebody’s head – there’s so much information and such powerful imagery that visitors are going to want to stand in front of it for a long time to catch all of the different stories.”

    He elaborates, “Beyond the pictures, beyond the display cases, the technology is showing older photos or videos or re-enactments, providing a point of connection to bring artifacts to life.”

    Teachey also speaks of the 4K HDR professional BRAVIA displays, of which more than two dozen ranging in size from 55 inches to 85 inches are featured throughout the museum as digital signage and to enhance exhibitory.  This includes the models showcased in the replica Praise House – a place of worship for enslaved individuals.  “The way these high-definition screens are used within the Praise House is very impactful,” he says.  “You’re watching a video on them but you’re inside a replica of a building that’s very ancient and solemn and the technology has a reverence and a purpose.  It allows you to be transported back, so again it’s serving as a transformative piece that connects everyone to these stories.”

    In addition, the museum uses Sony’s projectors, lenses and wireless audio solutions throughout its space.  Projectors help screen content, support wall-mapped content and share footage in rotating exhibits and screening rooms, as well as in the IAAM’s Center for Family History, an important space for tracing genealogy and connecting the dots of people’s pasts.

    Dr. Matthews also acknowledges technology’s ability to move the IAAM outside of their facility.  She explains, “We also have virtual exhibitions which we launched before we opened our physical doors.  This has allowed membership and interest to grow around the nation and the globe.  Technology allows us to serve those who may not physically enter our space, through virtual exhibitions.”

    She maintains that technology enables the IAAM to engage with a more digitally savvy audience.  “Digital natives have a high standard for technology and expect it to do more than just sit there.  They expect technology to be used to engage them.  They want to be a part of a story, they want to generate a story, they want to add to a story.  As a history museum using technology, we are particularly positioned to be able to do that – to engage, to share stories, to capture stories, to receive stories and to build upon stories.”

    Sony’s support of the Museum, through the company’s Global Social Justice Fund, is also viewed as instrumental by their personnel.  Dr. Matthews says, “For museums and businesses in the non-profit sector, what we’re trying to do is provide access.  We are trying to deliver more than our community in and of itself can support.  So, it’s really important to have corporate partners who understand that and are as equally committed as we are.  And I must give a nod to partners who lean into the more difficult stories, who lean into the impact of telling difficult stories well and who understand that the reason we’re sharing these stories and learning this history is not just about yesterday, but it’s about today and it’s about tomorrow.”

    Teachey adds, “Sony being able to step up and provide a lot of the donated technology and expertise is massive.”

    Overall, those at the IAAM all agree that their purpose is to provide visitors with a way to connect with, engage with and build upon their understanding of the past to help influence the future, and technology is pivotal in sharing these stories and bringing them to life.

    Pryor sees the IAAM “not as a beginning, middle and end” and recognizes that the museum means different things to different people throughout their quest for knowledge.  She continues, “Maybe we’re a part of someone’s beginning.  Maybe we’re helping them flesh out their middle.  But we never want to be the end.”

    Dr. Matthews “hopes that visitors will leave the museum more curious than they came in.”  Similarly, Teachey’s desire is that “you walk away with something that you did not come with.”  He adds, “The biggest piece is walking away with conversations that help to connect and mend and mold and heal.  The museum and its technology can bring all of that together for visitors.”

    Three-time football champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, refreshed their venue’s presentation technology at the start of the 2023 season, purchasing more than 600 of Sony’s professional BRAVIA BZ35J and BZ40H displays, and expanding their partnership with the company.  With options ranging in size from 43-inches to 75-inches, the Chiefs are now able to take advantage of the power of Sony’s lineup of professional displays which combine flexibility, connectivity, ease of use, and superior image quality in their premium spaces, including all suites, and in the Club Level concourse.

    With an expedited timeline to execute, the Chiefs worked with Sony and AVI-SPL, a leading professional audio/video solutions provider, integrator, and installer, to complete this multi-faceted project. Together they were able to secure a high volume of inventory, under budget, in time for the beginning of the season.

    Aging technology made the Chiefs realize an upgrade was necessary.  They chose to standardize on Sony’s professional BRAVIA displays due to their IP capabilities, the club’s familiarity with the Sony brand, and its reliable reputation.  Pat Mitchell, Project Director MEP and Construction for the Kansas City Chiefs, explained, “We had some outdated screens, plus we’re trying to stay more flexible as we decide whether we’re going to keep our current SMATV distribution or move to an IPTV solution.  It was important to have a product that was able to be upgraded to the IPTV.”

    An added benefit of the new Sony display technology, when compared to the Chiefs’ previous generation Sony models, is its smaller footprint, lighter weight, and slimmer profile.  They exude a premium feel and keep their venue fresh which aligns with the team’s desire to create an enhanced fan experience.  Matt Diemand, Coordinator, Partnership Strategy, noted, “Having as up-to-date technology as possible enhances the game experience, which in a space where we’re hosting partners and clients, is a priority.”

    Diemand also mentioned the importance of having technology that works, without issue.  He stated, “From the fan side, especially the client partnership side, ease of use and reliability are paramount.  When something is modern, easy to turn on by pressing a button or two and works seamlessly – that is great.  We had our previous displays for so long because they just worked, and we expect these new Sony models will set us up well into the future.”

    From a partnership perspective, Diemand has enjoyed a great working relationship with Sony.  He also appreciates Sony’s focus on product lifecycle sustainability which has become a more prominent focus across the sports landscape.

    With several hundred displays already deployed, the Kansas City Chiefs are only in phase one of their refresh project, with plans to build out the partnership even further in the coming seasons.

    ReliaQuest is a global cybersecurity company that makes security possible through its GreyMatter security operations platform, with locations in Tampa, Florida; Salt Lake City, Utah; Las Vegas, Nevada; as well as Dublin, London and Pune, India.     ReliaQuest ultimately chose a range of 150 Sony pro BRAVIA displays to help suit their business’s needs in their operating centers — the 55 inch, 65 inch, 75 inch, 85 inch, and 100 inch models. As their solutions provider and integrator for the new installations, AVI-SPL provided ReliaQuest with product guidance and delivered on the installation.

    According to Marrow, the technology was selected due to its combination of quality, reliability, durability, ease of use and design aesthetic. The displays are used broadly for playing videos and running meetings in their collaboration spaces, huddle rooms, conference rooms, common areas and performance centers, where the company holds their trainings. They’re also used for multi-purpose collaborations with their customers and teammates, and for digital signage in the open areas of their operating centers including in their cafés and reception spaces as well as sitewide communications and company town halls.

    The pro BRAVIA’s high quality was especially important to ReliaQuest due to them regularly hosting top leaders at their operating centers for interactions ranging from executive business reviews to trainings. “The high-quality, consistent and reliable experience that we have with the displays gives us peace of mind. We know that they’re going to work every time and the images are crisp, they’re clear, they’re colorful and they’re stable.” said Marrow.

    Since ReliaQuest opened its new operating center and installed Sony’s professional BRAVIAs and other technology, the overall experience has been enhanced for their customers and teammates. A perk the company noticed about the pro BRAVIAs was their ability to operate without interactions from the everyday user. ReliaQuest set up their displays so everything could be managed centrally, which is very helpful for their teammates, especially when the displays run on a schedule to maximize the energy efficiency and minimize wear. Due to the pro BRAVIA screen mirroring feature, their employees work collaboratively by utilizing Microsoft Teams. With their company buildings having large windows and being located in areas with natural bright light, the displays have no issues providing good, vibrant image quality — even when it’s midday.

    Palmer Digital Group, a full-service supplier and installer of indoor and outdoor digital kiosks, drive-thru digital menu boards and canopy systems, has designated next week’s Restaurant Franchising & Innovation Summit in Myrtle Beach as the launch point for an expanded trade show and conference strategy in 2025. The show, which has a theme of powering franchise growth through technology and leadership, will also offer a glimpse into PDG’s strategy for the National Restaurant Show in Chicago in May where the company will introduce a new self-service indoor kiosk.

    Exhibiting at Booth 35 (March 11-13), Palmer Digital Group (PDG) will demonstrate its industry-leading QSRDMB255 outdoor digital menu board with a core strategy of introducing franchisees to PDG’s technology and value proposition as an all-in-one supplier. PDG designs and builds all its indoor and outdoor digital menu board structures in house, and is the only supplier serving this space to offer in-house installation services. Its pedestal-based outdoor digital menu boards have proven especially popular with QSR and fast casual chains, requiring just two technicians to lift the durable yet lightweight structures into place.

    PDG experts will demonstrate the QSRDMB255’s features to franchisees and other attendees with an emphasis on how they contribute to the QSR’s bottom line. Those features include interoperability with digital signage software for dynamic presentation of menu items, limited time offers and ads that help customers make informed decisions while inspiring additional purchases.

    “We work closely with QSR and fast casual businesses of all sizes, and we find that many smaller to mid-sized local and regional chains presume that transitioning from static to digital menu board systems are beyond their budgets,” said Chuck Lewis, Vice President, Palmer Digital Group. “We offer many options from single to triple-display digital menu board systems to meet each customer’s budget, and our all-in-one designs bring all required infrastructure together to ensure secure installations.”

    Lewis adds that PDG’s pedestal structures can be installed by an in-house team to reduce costs, or customers can opt to use PDG’s installation services or a third-party integrator for pedestal or canopy systems. “We will work with all customers to ensure new digital menu board systems are properly specified, and consult with contractors and end users on installation points to ensure proper heights, sightlines and visibility of menu board content,” said Lewis. “These are the important pieces that help our customers increase customer receipts and create memorable consumer experiences.”

    All PDG outdoor menu board solutions include simple network and electrical connections for dynamic media content and local power, along with shelving for media players and routers. Options include PDG’s convenient side-mount audio enclosure, which accommodates microphones and speakers in a protective housing securely attached to the menu board structure.

    Next-level visuals, dependable operation

    Ryan Hunter: “The James B. Hunt Jr. Library serves a big purpose for our students, but it’s also open to the public. When the library was built over ten years ago, multiple video walls were installed simultaneously, running virtually non-stop 24/7. Over time, they ended up requiring repairs and needing to be replaced. The parts and support we needed were no longer available, and we had to start planning to replace these walls.

    “I saw Sony’s Crystal LED video wall in action while attending InfoComm in 2019, and I thought it looked incredible. It was a level beyond what everybody else was able to provide at the time and as far as I’m concerned, it still is. We considered various manufacturers, and when it came down to image quality Sony got the general vote. We were also sold on Crystal LED because of its resolution and the fact that it supports a 120 Hz refresh rate and High Dynamic Range (HDR). Its simplicity is another high point. Being able to expedite that repair time is another huge benefit. In the event of an issue, our video wall will not be down for nearly as long as it used to be.

    Amazing image quality delivers an immersive experience

    “We’ve installed one CLED video wall, in the space known as the iPearl Immersion Theater. Displayed on a curve to give viewers an immersive experience from many different angles, the iPearl Immersion Theater’s video wall is approximately 20 feet by 8 feet with a resolution of 4000 x 1620. It works as a digital exhibit space for student, faculty and community projects, so viewers will see student and faculty work, community project results, and special events such as a “Martin Luther King Experience.” In addition to the amazing image quality, individuals can also experience a virtual reality environment where they’ll watch a speech and the image quality paired with sound effects can make them feel like they’re attending the speech in person.

    “Due to its flexible support of digital content creation frameworks and game engines – such as Unity and Unreal – Crystal LED also opens the door for students to come in and build their projects off those templates, which empowers their creativity.

    “The reception to Crystal LED has been positive, with staff and visitors impressed by the quality and how immersive the images are. So far we’ve only installed one CLED video wall, but we plan on installing a second one called the ‘Art Wall.’ This won’t be used for immersive content or instructional purposes, but it will be a great way to display digital signage and student artwork.

    “Sony was great to work with when it came to defining the parameters of what could fit, what would work, and the maximum curve for this wall. Working with the curved shape required careful consideration, as Sony would only recommend certain degrees to make it work flawlessly.”

    The Brooklyn Paramount Theater, an iconic former movie palace in Downtown Brooklyn, has been reborn as a concert venue. Originally renowned for showcasing the latest cinematic releases from Paramount Pictures, the theater also hosted legendary performers such as Duke Ellington, Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald. Over the years, the venue transitioned to a 1,200-seat multi-purpose arena and served as the home court for the Brooklyn Kings basketball team. From 2017 to 2023, the theater underwent a meticulous, multi-million-dollar renovation to restore its original charm and adapt it to modern performance standards.

    In March 2024, it reopened, offering music lovers and cultural enthusiasts a spectacular space where history and cutting-edge production meet. Known for its architectural grandeur, the theater now combines historic charm with modern technology, creating a breathtaking venue equipped with state-of-the-art lighting, audio and visual enhancements. The centerpiece of this transformation is an immersive visual experience in the theater’s arched entry hall, where projection mapping brings the ceiling to life nightly before each show.

    Electrosonic, an award-winning global provider of audiovisual and technology solutions, was chosen to design, engineer and integrate audiovisual technology throughout the Brooklyn Paramount Theater. To deliver an immersive visual experience, Electrosonic selected Realmotion, a real-time platform that supports ideation through prototyping, execution and monitoring of next-generation immersive and interactive environments.

    The arched ceiling of the Brooklyn Paramount Theater, with its unique architectural details, posed a significant challenge for Realmotion. To create a flawless, immersive display, the solution required seamless edge blending across multiple projectors. The design became more complex due to the ceiling’s unique curvature and intricate patterns. Traditionally, aligning multiple projectors to produce a continuous image without visible seams or distortions would be a labor-intensive process, demanding extensive manual calibration to achieve visual coherence.

    To overcome this challenge, Realmotion collaborated with Scalable Display Technologies to implement a cutting-edge solution for automated projection mapping and edge blending. Using Realmotion’s G8 media server for content delivery, the team incorporated Scalable’s Display Manager, a sophisticated software solution that leverages computer vision to streamline projector alignment and edge blending across complex surfaces.

    Scalable uses its computer vision-based technology to create precise corrections, ensuring perfect edge blending and seamless mapping to the details of the arched ceiling. Those calibration files are referenced by Realmotion and rendered into each projector output as it fills content across the display for a cohesive visual experience. In the instance where a projector shifts, either during maintenance or over normal use, Scalable’s software allows for quick recalibration, minimizing downtime and reducing the need for costly, labor-intensive adjustments.
