Busy, noisy, transport centers like Brighton station can be challenging hearing environments, especially for passengers with hearing loss. The Auri™ system filters out background noise and delivers station audio directly to listeners’ ears for greater clarity and intelligibility.

    The system can also benefit people without hearing loss, including passengers who require language interpretation, are neurodiverse, or have visual impairments.

    Auri™ offers the future of assistive listening in a busy, historic railway station

    Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express railways operating under Greater Thameslink Railway (GTR), sponsored the permanent installation of Auri™ at the 185-year-old, Grade II* listed Brighton station. Bristol Temple Meads station featured the Auri™ system last year as part of a trial of Auracast™ broadcast audio technology in its buildings.

    GTR hosted an event at Brighton station on July 8 for members of the Brighton Hearing Loss Group so they could try the newly installed system. People who experienced the technology during the event remarked about the clarity of audio and expressed confidence at being able to hear important announcements.

    With Auri™, accessing clear audio is easy and convenient

    Ampetronic | Listen Technologies installed Auri™ TX2N 2-channel transmitters in the Brighton station. The sleek, low-profile transmitters provide long-range, low-latency Auracast™ broadcast audio. The installation happened quickly without any disruption to service or station downtime.

    Accessing the audio broadcasts is easy, convenient, and free for station visitors with compatible devices. They can find and select the broadcasts through their smartphones, similar to how they would search for and select a Wi-Fi network. Then, audio is broadcast to their Auracast™ enabled devices.

    The Challenge
    During the early stages of the project, community consultation revealed strong demand for hearing assistance capabilities across the stadium. The original plan involved deploying a traditional hearing loop system, which has long been a reliable solution for direct audio access.

    However, as the East Stand was added to the scope and the complexity of the infrastructure increased, the practicality of installing a loop system became a challenge. With multiple zones, large spaces and a need for flexible coverage, the team sought a future-focused alternative that could deliver equal access – without introducing technical or architectural constraints.

    The Solution
    Provision partnered with Jands to evaluate and model various assistive listening options for the East Stand, Causeway and Event Space. As the project evolved, so did the available technology. Jands introduced the client to Auri™, a groundbreaking assistive listening solution built around Auracast™ broadcasting.

    Auri™ allowed the venue to deliver the same direct audio experience as a hearing loop – without the complexity of under-floor cabling or amplifier arrays. Instead, it uses Bluetooth Low Energy to broadcast clear, low-latency audio to users’ own Auracast-enabled hearing aids, earbuds, smartphones or dedicated receivers.

    The final system installed at Stadium Taranaki comprises four Dante-enabled Auri™ transmitters -two covering the East Stand with more than 1,200 square metres of coverage, one serving the Causeway, and another dedicated to the Event Space. In addition, 32 Auri™ receivers were supplied for the venue to offer on demand to visitors who require them. This project represents one of the first Auracast™ stadium installations in Australasia and marks a significant milestone in the deployment of accessible technology in public venues.

    Endorsement and Impact
    The decision to adopt Auracast™ at Stadium Taranaki represents a landmark moment in accessibility for New Zealand – and it’s one that carries deeper national significance. According to Dr. Lisa Seerup, President of Hearing New Zealand, the country was once on the cusp of being the first in the world to launch Auracast™ during the FIFA Women’s World Cup, with backing from the Bluetooth SIG, FIFA, and government support through Sports Minister Grant Robertson.

    “New Zealand almost led the world with the launch of Auracast,” said Dr. Seerup. “We had support from FIFA to make the World Cup the most accessible ever and were in discussions with Bluetooth SIG to roll out Auracast across stadiums. It had global momentum, even reaching the level of Apple’s Tim Cook – until Apple confirmed they weren’t ready yet. That pause didn’t take away from the technology’s significance. Auracast is a game changer.”

    Unlike traditional assistive listening systems, which often rely on proprietary equipment and are confined to specific locations, Auracast™ is designed to work with all Auracast-compatible devices – expanding access to those who use hearing aids, earbuds, smartphones or AirPods.

    “The majority of systems in the past needed special equipment. Auracast doesn’t. It opens access not only to hearing aid users, but to the 80% of people who need hearing aids and don’t have them,” she added. “It’s the first time we’ve seen such a big investment by global tech companies in accessibility for people with hearing loss. My assessment? Game changer.”

    Hearing New Zealand, which has advocated for assistive listening technology since 1932, was pleased to see the implementation proceed at Stadium Taranaki and expressed interest in supporting its launch and promoting the venue as a national leader in accessibility.

    Listen Technologies and Ampetronic will offer HLAA 2024 Convention attendees a preview of Auri™, the first complete, installed Auracast™ broadcast audio-based assistive listening solution. Auri™ is the first product Listen Technologies and Ampetronic have co-developed since announcing their partnership. Auri™ is expected to ship later this year.

    The HLAA, or Hearing Loss Association of America, Convention is an annual communication-accessible conference designed to support hundreds of people with hearing loss from all walks of life around the United States. Attendees at the Convention are invited to experience Auracast™ broadcast audio and see demonstrations of Auri™ at the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) booth 405-407 and during select educational workshops.

    Transforming the Way Hearing Assistance is Delivered in Public Spaces

    Auracast™ broadcast audio is a new standard for Bluetooth® Low Energy that can broadcast audio simultaneously to an unlimited number of Auracast™ compatible devices. In spaces where Auracast™ broadcast audio is available, people with hearing aids, cochlear implants, earbuds, receivers, or other devices that are Auracast™ compatible will be able to receive high-quality audio from a public Auracast™ transmitter without added noise or effects caused by the room environment. This will provide both improved experience and broader inclusivity.

    Auri™ is the first-generation Auracast™ broadcast audio-based assistive listening solution that lets venues and end users access the emerging Auracast™ market now.

    Auri™ Increases Audio Accessibility and Provides Better Listening Experiences

    Listen Technologies and Ampetronic designed Auri™ as a complete solution that includes networked installation transmitters for multi-channel broadcast for any size space, with the option for open or secure transmission. The solution also includes dedicated receivers and docking stations. Most venues will use the dedicated receivers so guests without Auracast™ compatible devices can access Auracast™ broadcast audio.

    Auri™ will feature a complete line of accessories, including headphones, neck loops (or personal induction loops), and network management and configuration software. Auri™ will offer multi-language support. When combined with neck loops and signage, Auri™ will help venues meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) or global accessibility requirements for assistive listening.

Listen Technologies and Ampetronic are also active members of the Bluetooth SIG working to make Auracast™ broadcast audio, a reliable, new assistive listening option, as widely available as possible.

    Tracy Bathurst, chief technology officer at Listen Technologies, and Sam Burkinshaw, head of business development at Ampetronic, will join Chuck Sabin from the Bluetooth SIG, and Rich Fischer from GN ReSound, a manufacturer, to lead an educational workshop at the HLAA 2024 Convention. The workshop, titled “Keeping up with Progress and Deployment of Auracast™ Broadcast Audio – Latest Updates from the Market,” will take place Friday, June 28, from 2:30-3:45 p.m. All HLAA 2024 Convention attendees are invited to attend this workshop to learn more and experience Auracast™ broadcast audio.
